SUMMARY:The Coronado Expedition: The New Evidence
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Deni Seymour (Jornada Research Institute) will talk about her work over the last few years during which she and her team discovered 17 sites left behind in southern Arizona by the Coronado Expedition of 1539-1542. The discovery of a Spanish townsite\, overnight camps\, and travel routes have revolutionized our understanding of the expedition – where they went\, how they were organized\, weapons they carried and what they did. Equally important are the insights gained into the Native Nations that lived in the area and interacted with the Spanish. Also\, the discovery of a bronze cannon\, the oldest European weapon found in the continental U.S. \nCo-sponsored with the Museum of New Mexico Foundation\, Friends of Archaeology.
