SUMMARY:Luxury from the Provinces: Reading Morality on the Walls of a Roman Villa
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for our second event of the Fall 2026 cycle. Event description from the author:\nRoman writers often condemned luxury in domestic art. Drawing on repairs to the decor of Villa A at Oplontis\, one of the grandest complexes on the Bay of Naples\, Dr. Andrew Crocker explores how older\, austere styles and inexpensive local pigments could become a deliberate performance of Roman humility and virtue. \nAbout the speaker:\nDr. Andrew Crocker is Assistant Professor of Art History in the Department of Art History and Museum Studies at Florida Southern College. His research focuses on the social and political significance of Roman art\, especially the role of art in negotiating identity and status in the Roman provinces.

SUMMARY:Milo Rossi: Offline and In Person (Milwaukee\, WI)
DESCRIPTION:Internet sensation Milo Rossi — better known to his 3+ million followers as “miniminuteman” — is coming to Milwaukee for an unforgettable evening of science\, skepticism\, and side-splitting commentary. This isn’t your typical archaeology lecture. \nWith more than a billion views\, the self-proclaimed “Googledebunker” has become one of the most trusted voices in debunking archaeological misinformation and making science accessible to everyone. In this engaging talk\, he’ll dive into the real dangers of pseudoscience and pseudo-archaeology\, and discuss why science communication matters now more than ever. \nWhether you’re a longtime fan or new to Milo’s work\, expect his signature blend of humor\, insight\, and passion for truth as he tackles some of today’s biggest challenges in scientific literacy. Come ready to think critically\, laugh a little\, and leave with a fresh perspective on how we can all be better stewards of knowledge and the world around us. \nTICKETS: https://crowdwork.com/e/milwaukee-milo-rossi-offline-and-in-person

SUMMARY:Ancient Nubia: Reframing Power Dynamics in the Nile Valley
DESCRIPTION:Nubiologist Caroline Rocheleau discusses the NCMA’s fall exhibition Ancient Nubia: Excavating Treasures of the Nile and how it helps reframe power dynamics in the Nile Valley. Discover how the exhibition debunks George Reisner’s biased understanding of the Kingdom of Kush by using archaeology as the interpretive framework to reveal how knowledge of Nubia has been discovered\, interpreted\, and re-examined over time.

SUMMARY:Mirror\, Mirror: The Many Lives of an Ancient Greek Wedding Vase
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for our final event of the Fall 2026 cycle. Please note that this talk will be in-person only because it includes a report on unpublished material. Here’s a description of the talk from the speaker:\nA fifth-century Athenian wedding vase in the British Museum depicts a bride seated on her marriage bed\, gazing into a mirror as attendants bring gifts. Dr. Sheramy Bundrick reexamines this evocative scene and the vessel’s archaeological history\, exploring ancient Greek marriage\, women’s social networks\, ritual\, and death. From wedding celebration to funerary offering\, the vase reveals the many lives—and meanings—an ancient object could possess. \nAbout the speaker:\nDr. Sheramy Bundrick is Professor of Art History at the University of South Florida and a specialist in ancient Greek art. She earned her Ph.D. from Emory University and has received fellowships and grants from The Metropolitan Museum of Art\, the Fulbright Foundation\, the Archaeological Institute of America\, and the American Academy in Rome. She is the author of two books and numerous studies on Athenian vase painting and ancient Greek art.

SUMMARY:Working with texts from the Koldewey expedition to Babylon. Insights from the “Governance in Babylon” project.
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Odette Boivin (University of Toronto) – focuses on archival\, everyday Babylonian documents and historiographic sources. \nRobert Koldewey and his team excavated in Babylon between 1899 and 1917\, carrying out foundational work for our understanding of the city of Babylon and contributing to develop and establish archaeological standards in the early days of the discipline. As an Assyriologist\, Dr. Odette Boivin had the opportunity to work on a few hundreds of cuneiform tablets from the Koldewey expedition and examine in detail the recording of their archaeological context (Project Governance in Babylon 2021-2026). Her lecture discusses the approach preconized by Koldewey’s team for retrieving\, recording and handling written artefacts and the methods used they deployed. She presents also a few examples of how they were able to deduce information that was not recorded explicitly.

SUMMARY:Worlds Forever Changed: The Rio Grande Pueblos\, First Contact\, and the Vázquez de Coronado Expedition (1540-1542)
DESCRIPTION:Matthew Schmader (University of New Mexico) \nThe huge exploration led by Francisco Vázquez de Coronado was the first contact between Ancestral Rio Grande Pueblos and outsiders. Its intended goals failed and\nthe expedition spent the whole winter of 1540-1541 camped in village that was taken over from Southern Tiwa residents. Distrust and strife broke out into outright\nhostilities called the Tiguex War. Investigations of architecture\, materials\, and artifact patterning from a major site of the war\, located north of Albuquerque\, are presented.

SUMMARY:Built In the Past\, For the Future: 40 Years of Implementing the City Of Santa Fe's Archaeological and Historic District's Code and Ordinance.
DESCRIPTION:Paul Duran (City of Santa Fe\, Historic Preservation Division) \nIn 1986\, the City of Santa Fe established the archaeological ordinance in support of preserving the past for the future. Public education and preservation were hallmarks of the ordinance. Today\, the archaeological ordinance is tied to construction permits and development of Santa Fe’s infrastructure. Given the recent Santa Fe Forward initiative\, how will archaeologists continue to preserve the past for the future while meeting today’s needs? This lecture will discuss steps moving forward in the City of Santa Fe where we are implementing updates to the Archaeological and Historic Districts code and ordinance for best preservation practices today and for the future.

SUMMARY:Hot Histories: How Chile Peppers Conquered the World
DESCRIPTION:Katherine Chiou (University of Alabama/AIA National lecturer) \nToday\, chili peppers are central to cuisines across Asia\, Africa\, Europe\, and the Americas\, but all domesticated chili peppers trace their origins to the Indigenous\npeoples of the Americas. Drawing on archaeology\, botany\, and history\, this lecture explores how chili peppers were first domesticated\, how they spread across ancient\nsocieties in the Americas\, and how global trade and colonialism transformed them into one of the world’s most influential foods. From ancient farmers and cooks to\nmodern global cuisine\, this talk traces the remarkable story of how a small pepper reshaped the human experience of flavor.
