SUMMARY:Built In the Past\, For the Future: 40 Years of Implementing the City Of Santa Fe's Archaeological  and Historic District's Code and Ordinance.
DESCRIPTION:Paul Duran (City of Santa Fe\, Historic Preservation Division) \nIn 1986\, the City of Santa Fe established the archaeological ordinance in support of preserving the past for the future. Public education and preservation were hallmarks of the ordinance. Today\, the archaeological ordinance is tied to construction permits and development of Santa Fe’s infrastructure. Given the recent Santa Fe Forward initiative\, how will archaeologists continue to preserve the past for the future while meeting today’s needs? This lecture will discuss steps moving forward in the City of Santa Fe where we are implementing updates to the Archaeological and Historic Districts code and ordinance for best preservation practices today and for the future.

DESCRIPTION:Katherine Chiou (University of Alabama/AIA National lecturer) \nToday\, chili peppers are central to cuisines across Asia\, Africa\, Europe\, and the Americas\, but all domesticated chili peppers trace their origins to the Indigenous\npeoples of the Americas. Drawing on archaeology\, botany\, and history\, this lecture explores how chili peppers were first domesticated\, how they spread across ancient\nsocieties in the Americas\, and how global trade and colonialism transformed them into one of the world’s most influential foods. From ancient farmers and cooks to\nmodern global cuisine\, this talk traces the remarkable story of how a small pepper reshaped the human experience of flavor.

SUMMARY:Scorched: Native Women and Spanish Men in Sixteenth Century La Florida
DESCRIPTION:Rachel Briggs (UNC Chapel Hill) will speak about eight Native women who were enslaved by a group of Spanish soldiers and Native warriors\, forcing them into the brutal world of La Florida. This group of Native women become unlikely observers to one of history’s lost chapters\, bearing witness to Spain’s repeated failed attempts at colonization of the Southeastern United States in the sixteenth century. In this presentation\, she will focus on a small portion of their journey that took them to the Native town of Joara and the Spanish colonial site of Fort San Juan where they were expected to cook and care for at least thirty Spanish soldiers\, before they were relocated to the Spanish colony of Santa Elena in early 1568.
