SUMMARY:Milo Rossi: Offline and In Person (Omaha\, NE)
DESCRIPTION:Internet sensation Milo Rossi — better known to his 3+ million followers as “miniminuteman” — is coming to Omaha for an unforgettable evening of science\, skepticism\, and side-splitting commentary. This isn’t your typical archaeology lecture. \nWith more than a billion views\, the self-proclaimed “Googledebunker” has become one of the most trusted voices in debunking archaeological misinformation and making science accessible to everyone. In this engaging talk\, he’ll dive into the real dangers of pseudoscience and pseudo-archaeology\, and discuss why science communication matters now more than ever. \nWhether you’re a longtime fan or new to Milo’s work\, expect his signature blend of humor\, insight\, and passion for truth as he tackles some of today’s biggest challenges in scientific literacy. Come ready to think critically\, laugh a little\, and leave with a fresh perspective on how we can all be better stewards of knowledge and the world around us.

SUMMARY:Luxury from the Provinces: Reading Morality on the Walls of a Roman Villa
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for our second event of the Fall 2026 cycle. Event description from the author:\nRoman writers often condemned luxury in domestic art. Drawing on repairs to the decor of Villa A at Oplontis\, one of the grandest complexes on the Bay of Naples\, Dr. Andrew Crocker explores how older\, austere styles and inexpensive local pigments could become a deliberate performance of Roman humility and virtue. \nAbout the speaker:\nDr. Andrew Crocker is Assistant Professor of Art History in the Department of Art History and Museum Studies at Florida Southern College. His research focuses on the social and political significance of Roman art\, especially the role of art in negotiating identity and status in the Roman provinces.

SUMMARY:Medicalized technologies: ingredient patterns in ancient Egyptian therapeutic recipes as informants on food processing diversity
DESCRIPTION:The American Research Center in Egypt\, Northern California chapter\, and the UC Berkeley Department of Middle Eastern Languages and Cultures (MELC) invite you to attend a lecture by Dr. Jonathan (Jonny) Russell\, Brown University: \n“Medicalized technologies: ingredient patterns in ancient Egyptian therapeutic recipes as informants on food processing diversity” \nFriday October 23\, 2026\, 4 PM Pacific Daylight Time\nNote the time and day change!!!\nMELC Lounge/Rm 254 Social Sciences Building (formerly Barrows Hall)\, UC Berkeley \nThis is a hybrid lecture\, both in-person and virtual (Zoom). The lecture will not be recorded.\nMELC is not requiring registration\, so to attend this lecture\, click on the following join link at the time of the lecture:\nhttps://berkeley.zoom.us/j/2071243853?pwd=1dq3SwaoPnJCLGwKQs1sbTLG4Nobd0.1 \nAbout the Lecture: \nMuch has been written on ancient Egyptian food processing technologies\, especially in the domains of brewing and baking (for which Samuel 2000 remains a valued survey). Certain aspects of these technologies\, such as the varieties of yeast cultures used\, remain somewhat elusive. Others\, such as milk processing\, have received little to no attention. These lacunae are\, in many cases\, the result of the kinds of source material commonly consulted to elucidate ancient processes – tomb depictions and archaeological remains being chief among them. Notably\, medical texts list a wealth of food or food-adjacent products as ingredients in medicinal recipes but have been less appreciated in understanding food processing. The many constellations of ingredients are\, after all\, notoriously challenging if not impossible to translate\, and modern analyses are often mired by a compulsion to identify pharmacological activity as the primary motivation for their initial selection. \nThis lecture takes a fresh look at these problems. It will first explore a sample of representative manuscripts\, such as Papyrus Hearst (in Berkeley!)\, Ebers\, and a demotic manuscript in Vienna: all of which are compilations of recipes\, or “recipe compendia”. It will then examine the social and ritual contexts of the recipes recorded in these manuscripts\, to better understand both by and for whom the recipes were used. Following a careful analysis of recipe data\, the new hypothesis that many entries can be considered “medicalized” receptions of known processing technologies will be presented and explored. Focusing on recipes that manipulate brewing and cheese processing as case studies\, the lecture will demonstrate how aspects of these processes are “fossilized” in various ways within medicalized recipes. In addition to offering new insights into healing practices\, the presented results suggest more significant variety in food processing than presently assumed. \nAbout the Speaker: \nSince 2024\, Jonathan (Jonny) Russell has been assistant professor of Egyptology at Brown University\, where he teaches classes in ancient Egyptian history\, Middle and Late Egyptian\, hieratic\, and demotic\, as well as in Egyptian and Mesopotamian medicine and magic. Armed with a knowledge of Akkadian\, his research explores the similarities and differences in contents and social contexts of healing manuscripts from Egypt and Mesopotamia\, and how observations modify impressions of knowledge transmission across ancient communities in Northeast Africa and Western Asia. He is presently working on a monograph titled Variety and Versatility in Ancient Egyptian and Mesopotamian Specialist Healing: A Comparative Study\, in addition to a new English-language anthology of therapeutic compendia from Middle Kingdom to Roman Period Egypt. \nJonny submitted his PhD thesis to Leiden University (The Netherlands) in 2023 – a project which was funded by the Dutch Scientific Research Organisation (NWO) and titled: Towards a Historical Contextualisation of Ancient Egyptian Perspectives of the Inner Body\, Sickness\, and Healing. Before coming to Brown\, he worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute for the History of Pharmacy and Medicine at the Philipps-Universität Marburg (Germany)\, where he began exploring the intersections between food and therapeutic technologies. \nVisitor Parking: \nKeep in mind that restricted parking at UC Berkeley ends at 5 p.m. For Friday\, October 23\, 2026\, here are the best visitor-parking options near UC Berkeley’s Social Sciences Building (formerly Barrows Hall): Lower Sproul Parking Garage\, 2465 Bancroft Way; RSF Garage\, 2299 Bancroft Way. SUMMARY:Incidental Politics of Memory: State Nationalism\, Looting\, and the Intangible Severing of Heritage
DESCRIPTION:Discussions surrounding the destruction of cultural heritage predominantly focus on physical violence—the bombing of sites\, the looting of museums\, and the illicit trade of antiquities. While critical\, this focus often overlooks a quieter\, systemic form of loss: the intangible alienation of communities from their own pasts. Drawing on Michel-Rolph Trouillot’s framework of historical silencing and Yannis Hamilakis’s critiques of nationalist archaeology\, this talk re-evaluates heritage destruction as an epistemic and ideological process.

SUMMARY:The Living Legacy Of Amazonia's “Lost” Garden Cities: Three Decades of Collaborative Archaeology in the Xingu Indigenous Territory\, Brazil.
DESCRIPTION:This lecture gives an overview of collaborative archaeology and cultural heritage studies by the author and Brazilian colleagues with the Kuikuro Indigenous nation in the Território Indígena do Xingu (TIX) of the southern Brazilian Amazon. The project was Initiated in 1992\, born out of joint activities developed for the UN ecological summit in Rio de Janeiro\, and continues uninterrupted until today\, including several phases of collaborative work sponsored by UF. During this time\, three generations of Indigenous research participants have been trained in archaeological mapping and excavation\, remote-sensed data collection and mapping with precision GPS and\, more recently\, lidar and photogrammetry by colleagues at the Museu Goeldi in Brazil and in the USA. These joint discoveries revealed a genuinely Amazonian form of pre-European urbanism\, “garden cities\,” which represents an important example of high population densities and sophisticated forest and wetland management systems in the Amazon before 1492. Over the past five years\, lidar has revealed several similar cases of Indigenous urbanism and urbanized landscapes in the Amazon\, but the Xingu is unique in the degree to which contemporary descendant communities carry on the legacy of these ancient civilizations\, extending over two millennia in the TIX. Beyond these archaeological discoveries\, this presentation explores questions of collaboration\, knowledge sovereignty\, and self-determination of the Kuikuro and other Indigenous peoples across the Amazon.

SUMMARY:Mirror\, Mirror: The Many Lives of an Ancient Greek Wedding Vase
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for our final event of the Fall 2026 cycle. Please note that this talk will be in-person only because it includes a report on unpublished material. Here’s a description of the talk from the speaker:\nA fifth-century Athenian wedding vase in the British Museum depicts a bride seated on her marriage bed\, gazing into a mirror as attendants bring gifts. Dr. Sheramy Bundrick reexamines this evocative scene and the vessel’s archaeological history\, exploring ancient Greek marriage\, women’s social networks\, ritual\, and death. From wedding celebration to funerary offering\, the vase reveals the many lives—and meanings—an ancient object could possess. \nAbout the speaker:\nDr. Sheramy Bundrick is Professor of Art History at the University of South Florida and a specialist in ancient Greek art. She earned her Ph.D. from Emory University and has received fellowships and grants from The Metropolitan Museum of Art\, the Fulbright Foundation\, the Archaeological Institute of America\, and the American Academy in Rome. She is the author of two books and numerous studies on Athenian vase painting and ancient Greek art.

SUMMARY:Working with texts from the Koldewey expedition to Babylon. Insights from the “Governance in Babylon” project.
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Odette Boivin (University of Toronto) – focuses on archival\, everyday Babylonian documents and historiographic sources. \nRobert Koldewey and his team excavated in Babylon between 1899 and 1917\, carrying out foundational work for our understanding of the city of Babylon and contributing to develop and establish archaeological standards in the early days of the discipline. As an Assyriologist\, Dr. Odette Boivin had the opportunity to work on a few hundreds of cuneiform tablets from the Koldewey expedition and examine in detail the recording of their archaeological context (Project Governance in Babylon 2021-2026). Her lecture discusses the approach preconized by Koldewey’s team for retrieving\, recording and handling written artefacts and the methods used they deployed. She presents also a few examples of how they were able to deduce information that was not recorded explicitly.

SUMMARY:Worlds Forever Changed: The Rio Grande Pueblos\, First Contact\, and the Vázquez de Coronado Expedition (1540-1542)
DESCRIPTION:Matthew Schmader (University of New Mexico) \nThe huge exploration led by Francisco Vázquez de Coronado was the first contact between Ancestral Rio Grande Pueblos and outsiders. Its intended goals failed and\nthe expedition spent the whole winter of 1540-1541 camped in village that was taken over from Southern Tiwa residents. Distrust and strife broke out into outright\nhostilities called the Tiguex War. Investigations of architecture\, materials\, and artifact patterning from a major site of the war\, located north of Albuquerque\, are presented.
