SUMMARY:Author event with Emily Wilson
DESCRIPTION:AIA-Nashville Society invites members to join Parnassus Books and The Parthenon at a special author event with Dr. Emily Wilson.\nEventbrite link: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/author-event-with-emily-wilson-tickets-1992020069652?aff=ebdsoporgprofile \nParnassus Books and The Parthenon are pleased to present an evening with Emily Wilson for her new book\, CROSSING THE WINE-DARK SEA. \nParnassus Books and The Parthenon\, in partnership with Centennial Park Conservancy\, are thrilled to present a very special evening with Emily Wilson for her new book\, Crossing the Wine-Dark Sea\, in conversation with Helen Sanders. This ticketed event will be held at The Parthenon\, 2500 West End Ave\, on Tuesday\, September 1st\, at 6:30 PM. Doors will open at 5:30 PM. Tickets: Each ticket is $27.00 (plus Eventbrite fee) and includes one general admission seat and one signed copy of Crossing the Wine-Dark Sea. There will be a signing line for personalization directly following the event on stage. \nLocation and Parking: The Parthenon is located in Centennial Park. Parking is free. Use 307 27th Avenue N\, Nashville\, TN 37203 for navigation. For more details: Visit the Parthenon \nAccessibility: The lot closest to the Parthenon contains 96 spaces plus four accessible parking spaces. Accessible paved sidewalks lead to the museum entrance at sidewalk level on the east side of the building. There is a drop off lane at the end of the parking lot closest to our entrance. Vehicles may drop off and pick up passengers in this area. \nAbout the book: In this sharp and often entertaining tour through antiquity\, Emily Wilson–whose renditions of Homer’s Odyssey and Iliad have captured a generation’s imagination–explores the complicated terrain of reading and writing about the ancient past. Drawing on twenty years of scholarship and teaching\, Wilson explores the difficult choices that translators must make\, the pleasures of finding new solutions to old problems\, and the inevitable frustrations of never fully capturing what is in the original work. Across chapters that range from the politics of Helen of Troy to the obscenities of Aristophanes\, from Roman imitation of Greek models to contemporary debates over “foreignizing” and “domesticizing” styles\, Wilson examines how modern norms of gender\, sexuality\, violence\, humor\, and power complicate our readings of ancient works\, and how translation always risks denaturing what is unique and strange about the ancient world. Brilliant\, erudite\, and yet accessible to readers with no classical background\, Crossing the Wine-Dark Sea is at once an introduction to the wonders of Greek and Roman literature\, a manifesto for the value of translation in a rapidly changing world\, and an invitation to encounter ancient cultures anew. \nAbout the Author: Emily Wilson is a professor of classical studies at the University of Pennsylvania. She has been named a fellow of the American Academy in Rome\, a Guggenheim Fellow\, and a MacArthur Fellow. In addition to Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey\, she has also published translations of Sophocles\, Euripides\, and Seneca. She lives in Philadelphia. \nAbout Helen Sanders: Helen Sanders is Director of Education at Nashville’s Parthenon\, where she leads educational and public programming for the museum. She has served as a museum educator\, archaeologist\, and college instructor\, and previous work includes her role as internship coordinator for Nashville Public Library. She earned her PhD and MA in Classical Art and Archaeology from the University of Michigan and her BA in Classical and Near Eastern Archaeology from Bryn Mawr College.

SUMMARY:Arkansas ArcheOlympics
DESCRIPTION:The ArcheOlympics is an annual competition that brings together teams of archeology students\, Arkansas Archeological Society members\, middle school students\, and anyone else interested in archeology and having fun. The games consist of 3 events in which teams compete to show off their skills and knowledge in archeology-based games. The first is throwing a spear with an atlatl. This takes some skill\, so most teams get together and practice before the event. Archeoletes throw for both distance and accuracy during the competition. The second event is the trivia contest. This event changes slightly each year based on the gameshow format that we choose\, but archeoletes answer questions about archeology\, important archeological sites\, archeological ethics\, and other topics related to the theme. The third event is the Excavation to Curation Obstacle course. The course changes slightly each year\, but teams work together to make their way through the simulated stages of archeological research. Teams work together to earn the most points throughout the day to win the 3D printed trophy!
