SUMMARY:Vietnam & Cambodia: Cruising the Mekong River
DESCRIPTION:Archaeological Institute of America lecturer and host Joyce C. White will share insights with you throughout this journey. Dr. White has worked in Southeast Asian archaeology since the mid-1970s and currently directs a field-based archaeological research program in Laos that focuses on the history and prehistory of the Mekong Basin. She is co-director of the Middle Mekong Archaeological Project (MMAP) and Director of the University of Pennsylvania Museum’s Ban Chiang Project. Since 1987 Dr.\nWhite has been a researcher and associate curator at the Penn Museum\, and she is now adjunct Professor of Anthropology at the University of Pennsylvania. In 2013 she founded the Institute for Southeast Asian Archaeology (ISEAA)\, where she is currently its Executive Director. Dr. White has been a lecturer on seven previous tours to Laos\, Vietnam\, Cambodia\, Thailand\, and Myanmar\, including four times with the AIA on this very Mekong Princess program since 2016. During our trip\, she will discuss the culture\, history\, and prehistory of the Mekong River Basin\, the world’s twelfth longest river\, and the main artery for mainland Southeast Asia for communication\, trade\, and population movements for thousands of years. She will also discuss the ancient and historic trade networks that linked Southeast Asia to the rest of the Old World\, and the origins of Southeast Asian civilizations\, with a particular focus on the Khmer Empire. Her most popular lectures are about current archaeological research at Angkor\, and about her experience as an expert witness for a US Justice Department case on smuggling of Asian antiquities. Highlights include\, spending seven nights aboard the elegant MEKONG PRINCESS; Taking two full days to explore awe-inspiring ANGKOR\, including the mighty Angkor Wat; Attending a performance of APSARA\, a classical Khmer dance; Catching glimpses of the region’s unique RIVER VILLAGE lifestyle and Enjoying rides on local SAMPANS\, CYCLOS\, and TUK TUKS

Save the email\, because you will click on that link or button to join the meeting when it starts. ARCE Northern California members should note that this Zoom meeting will be hosted by the Orange County chapter of ARCE\, and will start at 1:30 PM instead of the usual 3 PM. \n* If you haven’t already installed Zoom\, we recommend that you download and install the Zoom program (app) well before you try to join the meeting. There IS an option to use your web browser to join the meeting instead of the Zoom program\, but the browser interface is limited and depends greatly on what browser and what operating system you’re using. \n* For tutorials on how to use Zoom\, go to https://learn-zoom.us/show-me. In particular\, “Joining a Meeting” should show you what you need to do to join this lecture. \nIf you have any questions before you register\, please send email to arcencZoom@gmail.com. \nAbout the Lecture: \nSince the early days of Egyptology it has been a commonplace that the Egyptian temple was conceived and decorated by the ancient Egyptians as an image of the world. Every visitor of any Egyptian temple would agree at once after a look at the ceiling covered with yellow stars on blue field and after a look at the columns with the floral design of their capitals. This is also true for the temple of Edfu. \nThe impression\, however\, that the temple was imagined to be an image of the world is not only gained by the outer appearance of the building and its decoration\, which strike the eye and cannot be unnoticed. \nThere are several other elements of the temple’s architecture and decoration which don’t catch the visitor’s eye immediately because they need some previous knowledge and some elucidation. This concerns the texts in particular. \nAbout the Speaker: \nDr. Dieter Kurth\, Prof-Dr Emeritus of Hamburg Univ\, is the director of the Edfu Project\, which he founded in 1985 with the aim of translating all the hieroglyphic inscriptions in the Temple of Edfu. From 1981 to 1982 he was a professor of Egyptology in Heidelberg\, acting for Prof Jan Assmann\, and from 1982 until his retirement in 2007 he was professor of Egyptology at the University of Hamburg. \nHe studied pedagogics in Bonn from 1962 until 1965. Afterwards\, until 1967\, he worked as a teacher at a primary school and a secondary school in Cologne\, finally teaching technical English at a vocational school. From 1968 until 1975 he studied Egyptology (main subject)\, Classical Archaeology\, Ancient Oriental Languages and Prehistory at the University of Cologne. After the promotion (PhD) he habilitated in the 1980s (venia legendi in Egyptology). In the years 2000 and 2004/5 he taught Egyptology as a visiting professor at the Egyptian Universities of Cairo (Ain Shams) and Qena (New Valley).

SUMMARY:What the Heck is Archaeology?
DESCRIPTION:“Join us for a quick and dirty intro to archaeology! This talk covers a broad overview of Florida’s history\, and how archaeological research can uncover new knowledge about the past\, confirm what we know\, or challenge what we think we know. We’ll also be learning about how different subfields of archaeology work\, and what it takes to become an archaeologist! \nThe subject will be South Florida which has been an incredible place to live for about 14\,000 years. How have people been using the landscape of the Keys from this period to modern day? In this lecture\, Florida Public Archaeology Network will discuss the archaeology of the Florida Keys\, including what tools\, food\, animals\, and people would have used and encountered in the past. There will also be a brief overview of modern work in the area\, including current research being undertaken by universities in Florida. \nMalachi Fenn\, MA\, RPA – Before becoming Public Archaeologist for FPAN’s Southeast Region\, Malachi Fenn worked on cultural resource management (CRM) and museum projects throughout South Florida. They earned their B.A. in Anthropology from New College of Florida. A lifelong visual artist\, Malachi has provided archaeological illustrations for numerous publications. Their specializations include Florida pre-colonial and historical archaeology\, museum collections care\, and scientific illustration.” \nThe Matecumbe Historical Trust’s next free presentation will be held on Tuesday\, October 17th at the Islamorada Library\, mile marker 81.5 starting at 6 pm. This presentation is free and open to the public. For more information call Barbara at 305-393-0940.

SUMMARY:Stone Vaulting in the Pre-Modern Mediterranean
DESCRIPTION:Sara Galletti\, “Stone Vaulting in the Pre-Modern Mediterranean” \nTHIS LECTURE IS FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. If you’re interested in archaeology\, please join us! \nAbout the lecture:\nThis talk will explore the history of a stone vaulting technique called stereotomy from a transnational\, longue durée perspective across the Mediterranean from the third century BCE—when the oldest of known stereotomic vaults was built in the Sanctuary of Delphi—through the sixteenth and seventeenth century\, when pioneering theoretical works such as those by Philibert de L’Orme (1514–70) and Alonso de Vandelvira (1544–1626) crossed the boundaries of the building trades and stereotomy became the focus of a broader intellectual debate about solid geometry. The complex\, fascinating history of stereotomy offers a privileged perspective on the cultural and material exchanges that have taken place\, across spatial\, linguistic\, and chronological boundaries\, in the long history of the Mediterranean and its peoples. \nAbout the speaker:\nDr. Sara Galletti\, Associate Professor of Art History at Duke University\, researches early modern architectural theory and practice\, with a focus on Europe and the Mediterranean. She has published on secular and religious French architecture\, on Philibert de L’Orme\, on the urban history of Paris\, on the relations between space and social structures\, as well as on the history of stereotomy. Currently\, she works on an NEH-funded book project tentatively titled History of Stone Vaulting in the Pre-Modern Mediterranean: Practices\, Theories\, and Patterns of Knowledge Transfer. \nOur lectures are sponsored by the Archaeological Institute of America\, with funding from the Davidson College Public Lectures Committee\, the Dean Rusk Program\, and the departments of Africana Studies\, Anthropology\, Art\, Classics\, Educational Studies\, History\, and Latin American Studies.\nPlease support us by joining the Archaeological Institute of America for $50 (students $25)\, which includes a subscription to Archaeology magazine. SUMMARY:“Maritime Trade and Migration Along the Western Black Sea Coast: Examining Greek Apollonia Pontica (7th-3rd century BC) and Roman Deultum (1st-4th century AD)” by Katharine Kolpan PhD\, Department of Sociology and Anthropology\, University of Idaho
DESCRIPTION:The Milesian Greek colony of Apollonia Pontica (7th-3rd century BC) and its Roman colonial successor\, Deultum (1st-4th century BC)\, were both prosperous trade centers and important Western Black Sea ports. Archaeological evidence\, such as imported glass\, Attic black-figure pottery\, and non-native macrobotanicals\, indicates that the local population was engaged in maritime trade with merchants from other cities throughout the Aegean and the Near East\, who were likely exchanging their goods for the region’s rich copper and iron ore and the fish from its abundant fisheries. While there is significant evidence that goods traveled around the area\, what is less certain is how both colonies’ positions as major trading centers affected migration to Apollonia and Deultum after their initial colonization and\, and if so\, whether new arrivals were assimilated into the population or were victims of hostility and violence. What little historical data there is suggests that successive waves of migration led to greater instability\, however the archaeological evidence has yet to fully address this issue. This presentation will assess the evidence for trade during both the Greek and Roman periods as well as skeletal evidence of violence and healed trauma at Apollonia\, while also exploring how current archaeological and osteological methods can be utilized to expand on lingering questions related to migration\, assimilation\, and the possibility of unrest along the Western Black Sea Coast during Classical Antiquity. \nThe lecture will broadcast in realtime via Zoom.\nJoin Meeting: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/84120684037?pwd=clk3Tjh1RlRlbmd6OTdJNzFsUDhRQT09\nMeeting ID: 841 2068 4037\nPasscode: 004215
