DESCRIPTION:Ancient curse tablets\, with texts usually scraped into thin\, soft lead sheets\, then rolled up and hidden in tombs\, wells\, or walls\, represent some of the most fascinating sources of ancient beliefs in magic and dark powers. \nCurses could target rivals in business or love\, circus charioteers racing against one’s own favorite faction\, or even a humble green grocer who had done the writer some unnamed wrong. \nProfessor Hollmann (University of Washington)\, in collaboration with Robert Daniel of the University of Cologne\, has been working on a on a two-volume edition\, translation\, and commentary of Ancient Greek lead curse tablets from ancient Antioch and Caesarea and will introduce us to some of his newest discoveries.

DESCRIPTION:Construction of the Henry Street Bridge brought renewed attention to portions of Indianapolis’ historic Old and New Burying Grounds\, later known collectively as Greenlawn Cemetery.\nArchaeologists documented more than 1\,700 burial shafts within the project area\, revealing a complex landscape shaped by nineteenth-century burial\, earlier relocation efforts\, and more than a century of urban development. This talk explores how archaeology\, bioarchaeology\, historical research\, and community collaboration are helping reconstruct the cemetery’s history and the lives of the people buried there\, while guiding their respectful care and eventual reburial.

DESCRIPTION:Charles Eliot Norton Memorial Lectureship \nSpeaker: Dr. Alison Futrell\, University of Arizona  \nAbstract:\nOne of the key motifs in popular representations of the last of the Ptolemies is Cleopatra’s Barge\, a nexus of seduction\, pleasure\, gratification. For the historical Cleopatra VII\, the barge was a political and religious platform for shaping positive interactions with diverse audiences in the ancient Mediterranean\, meant to stabilize and secure her realm and shape a vision for future authority\, with power strongly founded in the past. In Egypt\, Cleopatra reinforced connections with local powerbrokers and processed between ritual centers\, a dynamic divine ruler enacting key functions that ensured the practical and sacred continuity of her realm. Her famous Nile Cruise with Julius Caesar was a sacred pageant that featured her newly secured strength as queen\, goddess\, partner and chosen of the gods. Her notorious meeting with Antony on the barque of Isis was both a ritualized performance of royal leadership and the reassertion of dynastic claims\, the launch of a new Empire rising in the Eastern Mediterranean.

SUMMARY:“Sex in the Roman Arena”
DESCRIPTION:A lecture in celebration of International Archaeology Day by Alison Futrell\, Professor of History at the University of Arizona. Futrell’s research is guided by her interest in the performance and imagery of power in the Roman Empire\, with particular focus on spectacle and gender. She is also fascinated by representations of the ancient Mediterranean in modern popular culture. Her talk tackles the sexualized nuances of the arena\, touching on the relative masculinity of gladiators as a group\, within Roman society\, as well as the how the different styles of combat demonstrated different levels of virility. And what about female performers? How did spectacularization of sex enhance demonstrations of moral and political authority by imperial sponsors? Women in the arena attracted the audience’s focus and disrupted messages of imperial power and challenged audience assumptions about strength\, about blood\, and about humanity.

SUMMARY:Revelation & Archaeology at Sardis
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an exploration of the archaeological history of an ancient capital that became a historic Christian city. \nSardis\, a UNESCO World Heritage site\, is known from the Bible as one of the seven cities of Revelation. But before that\, it was the capital of Lydia\, a legendary ancient empire where coinage was first invented. Excavations at this ancient Turkish city have revealed major changes in pagan sanctuaries during the fourth and fifth centuries AD—a period shaped by the recognition and spread of Christianity in the eastern Roman Empire. \nFor the last 18 years\, University of Wisconsin– Madison professor Nick Cahill has directed the excavations at Sardis. In this lecture\, he will reflect on what he has learned through decades of fieldwork.

SUMMARY:Vigna Randanini: The Jewish Catacombs of Rome
DESCRIPTION:Join Dr. Jessica Dello Russo for an engaging exploration of the Jewish catacombs of ancient Rome and the discoveries that are transforming our understanding of Jewish life and burial practices in antiquity. A specialist in Roman topography\, funerary archaeology\, and the history of archaeology\, Dr. Dello Russo has developed and curated major scholarly initiatives\, including the DAPICS image archive\, the BiblioSelect research indices\, the Luminaria blog\, and the ongoing digitization of the archives of ICS founder Estelle Shohet Brettman. \nDr. Dello Russo’s archaeological and archival research has yielded significant discoveries\, including pieces of the renowned “Sarcophagus of the Menorah” from the Jewish Catacombs of Vigna Randanini\, the rediscovery of the long-inaccessible Jewish catacomb of Vigna Cimarra\, and previously unpublished documentation from the earliest excavations of Rome’s Jewish catacombs. These findings have shed new light on the history and preservation of these extraordinary underground cemeteries. Drawing on her doctoral research\, Dr. Dello Russo will discuss the history\, archaeology\, and enduring significance of Rome’s Jewish catacombs\, offering fresh insights into one of the oldest Jewish communities in the Diaspora and the remarkable subterranean monuments that preserve its legacy.
