SUMMARY:IAD at the Beaches History Museum
DESCRIPTION:The Archaeological Institute of America–Jacksonville Society will celebrate International Archaeology Day with its annual fair at the Beaches Museum in Jacksonville Beach from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Attendees can learn how local Native Americans made pottery and rope from natural resources and can actually make their own examples. Other organizations that will be participating are the University of North Florida and the Jacksonville Museum of Science and History. There will also be a simulated dig where children can pretend to be archaeologists. Students from the University of North Florida will be on hand to assist. At noon in the historic 1887 chapel we will have a lecture by Dr. John Walker\, a professor at the University of Central Florida.

DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, October 15th\, 10am-2pm\n$ = $4 park admission fee\, visitors 3 and under and 62 and older admitted free.\nFamily friendly \nPoverty Point World Heritage Site invites visitors to take part in celebrating International Archaeology Day on Saturday\, Oct. 15. From 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.\, there will be a variety of activities highlighting how life may have been for the native inhabitants thousands of years ago.\nGuests can learn about spear-throwing with an atlatl and even try it out for themselves or watch as stone tools are created during flint knapping demos. You can also assist our site archaeologists in their work. They will be conducting water screening where loads of excavated soil are washed in order to find artifacts. \nPoverty Point World Heritage Site offers visitors the unique opportunity to experience and learn about the earthworks and those individuals who raised them from the ground between the years of 1700 and 1100 BCE. The $4 admission fee provides access to the museum\, film theatre\, hiking trail\, driving tour\, seasonal tram tour\, and interpretive events. SUMMARY:Archaeology: Preserving the Past for the Future
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate International Archaeology Day with IUP’s Annual Archaeology Open House \nIndiana\, PA – The Anthropology Department at Indiana University of Pennsylvania will hold their annual Archaeology Open House on Saturday\, October 15\, from 12:00-3:00 PM. Activities will take place on the ground floor of McElhaney Hall\, as well as outside on the “South Lawn” adjacent to the building (weather permitting). No matter what your level of archaeological knowledge is\, there will be something for everybody. \nHave you ever picked up an artifact and wondered about it? Bring it and any information you have about where you found it to our “Stump the Archaeologist” table so we can identify it for you! Other events include prehistoric and historic artifact displays from local archaeological sites\, artifact identification\, stone tool-making demonstrations\, Early Human displays\, and lab tours. There will also be kids events (for kids and the young at heart)\, with activities such as prehistoric hand-painting\, wampum beading\, and pottery refitting. All of the archaeology laboratories (including the faunal\, botanical\, and geophysical labs) will open their doors to the public during the event. Travel back in time and come see how archaeology is done at this free event! \nArchaeology Day is a tradition in the Anthropology Department that allows IUP students and faculty to share their knowledge and love of the past with others. The annual Open House is held during Archaeology Month and is celebrated in conjunction with International Archaeology Day\, a celebration of archaeology and the thrill of discovery held every year by the Archaeological Institute of America (AIA). Every October\, the AIA and archaeological organizations across the United States\, Canada\, and abroad present archaeological programs and activities for people of all ages and interests. Managed by the Utah Division of State Parks\, you can tour this site\, and nearby Juke Box Cave with professional archaeologists from Metcalf Archaeological Consultants\, Inc.\, who have been involved with these caves for more than 25 years. Danger Cave\, partially excavated by Jesse D. Jennings in the late 1940s contains an archaeological record going back 12\,000 years and yielded amazing information about the hunter-gatherer cultures who occupied the Basin. There is a fee of $20.00 for adults and $15.00 for kids 8 – 16.

DESCRIPTION:Dr. Joel Palka\nAssociate Professor\, School of Human Evolution and Social Change\nArizona State University \nDr. Palka’s ongoing archaeological and anthropological project at Lake Mensabak in Chiapas explores past to present Maya use of modified waterscapes for fishing and managing plant communities. At this and other sites in the region\, Maya people collectively dug canals and made reservoirs for large-scale\, integrated ecological aquaculture. Like domesticated landscapes for agriculture\, people in the Mesoamerican culture area engineered water works for harvesting fish\, turtles\, waterfowl\, and aquatic plants for household consumption. This presentation covers insights from archaeology\, Maya collaborations\, art\, and ethnohistory indicating that fisheries can be added to current research on raised fields\, water control\, subsistence ecology\, and community organization in Mesoamerica.

As the event will take place in the museum\, there will be a special mini-exhibition presenting artefacts from the period of Roman influence from own collections\, incl. valuable numismatic items to furnish the grave of a warrior from the Przeworsk culture. SUMMARY:Grave Creek Mound Archaeological Complex Celebrates International Archaeology Day
DESCRIPTION:MOUNDSVILLE\, W.Va. — Grave Creek Mound Archaeological Complex will celebrate International Archaeology Day on October 15 with a program titled The Real Bebbanburh: The Castle That Started it all in Netflix’s Hit Drama “The Last Kingdom”. The program starts at 2:00 pm on Saturday\, October 15\, and is open to the public free of charge. \nThe program will be presented by Lauren E. Nofi\, a community archaeologist who has worked at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History and Colonial Williamsburg in the United States; also in Ireland\, Scotland and the United Kingdom. Nofi holds a B.A. in Anthropology from the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg\, VA\, and an M.A. in Archaeology (with Merit) from the University of Sheffield in Sheffield\, UK. \nMs. Nofi will take a deep dive into the history and archaeology of Bamburgh Castle (UK)\, focusing on early medieval Northumbria. This castle features as the hero Uhtred’s motivation in both The Last Kingdom books by Bernard Cornwell (who also wrote the Sharpe’s Rifles series) and subsequent television series. The castle is real\, but is Uhtred? Moreover\, was the castle ever worth all that trouble? This presentation is appropriate for those both familiar and unfamiliar with the series\, by an archaeologist who has personal experience excavating at Bebbanburh\, now called Bamburgh\, \nSaturday\, October 15 has been designated International Archaeology Day by the Archaeological Institute of America (AIA). An international list of programs for the event at https://www.archaeological.org/programs/public/archaeologyday/ . \nOperated by the West Virginia Department of Arts\, Culture and History\, Grave Creek Mound Archaeological Complex features one of the largest conical burial mounds built by the Adena people between 250 – 150 B.C. and ranks as one of the largest earthen mortuary mounds anywhere in the world. Exhibits and displays in the Delf Norona Museum interpret what is known about the lives of these prehistoric people and the construction of the mound. The complex also houses the West Virginia Archaeological Research and Collections Management Facility. \nAdmission to Grave Creek Mound Archaeological Complex is free. The Delf Norona Museum\, located at 801 Jefferson Avenue\, is open 9 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and closed Sunday and Monday. SUMMARY:Amelia Edwards: The Founding of the Egyptian Exploration Fund and the Exodus
DESCRIPTION:Amelia Edwards was the driving force behind the creation in 1882 of the Egyptian Exploration Fund (EEF\, now Egyptian Exploration Society). The story of this individual is a remarkable one. As a woman of no money and no formal training in Egyptology who had spent decades of her life in totally unrelated activities\, her formidable presence in the world of Egyptology would have been a surprise to those who had known her. Along with her determination to promote Egyptology was her desire to find the route of the Exodus. She had written extensively about the Exodus and was certain she knew who the Pharaoh of the Exodus was. The first archaeology campaign by the EEF was to find the route of the Exodus and it appeared to have succeeded.In this presentation\, I will examine the life of Amelia Edwards at the dawn of Egyptology and how quickly things changed after she died. \nPeter Feinman received his B.A. in history from the University of Pennsylvania\, a M.Ed. from New York University\, an MBA from New York University\, and an Ed. D. from Columbia University. He is the founder of the Institute of History\, Archaeology\, and Education. His interests cross disciplinary boundaries including American history\, ancient civilizations\, biblical history\, and New York history. He is the president of the Westchester Society of the Archaeological Institute of America and the Vice President of the American Research Center in Egypt\, New York Society. He advocates for the importance of local and state history in the curriculum\, community\, and tourism and is the author of a blogs on The State of State History and The State of American Civics. He is a contributor to the recent book Five Views of the Exodus (Zondervan\, April 2021). His current book is The Exodus: An Egyptian Story (Oxbow\, November 2021). \, Penn Museum \nAbstract \nIn the ancient world\, the Egyptians had a reputation for excelling in divination\, the practice of gaining knowledge about the future via occult channels. Many types of divination were known and habitually practiced in ancient Egypt\, primarily by temple priests who employed specific handbooks for this purpose. Such arts included astrology\, the study of the behavior of animals (so-called animal omina)\, oil divination (aka lecanomancy)\, and more. But one particularly popular branch of divination was oneiromancy\, that is\, dream interpretation. \nThis talk will introduce the audience to new research on ancient Egyptian oneiromancy\, discussing in detail the workings of dream interpretation manuals and what light they shed on our knowledge of the ancient Egyptian mind. \nBiography:\nDr. Luigi Prada is Assistant Professor of Egyptology at Uppsala University\, Sweden. Formerly\, he was a member of the Egyptology departments of Oxford\, Heidelberg\, and Copenhagen University. Within Egyptology\, he specializes in textual\, religious\, and social studies\, with particular focus on the Late and Graeco-Roman Periods. He is passionate about fieldwork\, and is the Assistant Director of the Oxford/Uppsala epigraphic team working with Egyptian colleagues in Elkab in southern Egypt; he has also participated in fieldwork in Sudan. He is currently President of the Society of Friends and Collaborators of the Museo Egizio in Turin (ACME).
