SUMMARY:COMICS AS A WINDOW TO THE PAST | International Archaeology Day | Archeopark Pavlov
DESCRIPTION:This year’s International Archaeology Day at the Pavlov Archeopark will connect archaeology with fine arts and popular culture. The main theme is comics as a way of telling the past\, which can bring the world of prehistory closer in a playful and understandable way. We will also focus on the accompanying exhibition The Second Life of Venus\, which commemorates the famous anniversary of the discovery of the Venus of Věstonice and 100 years of its “second life” in our culture and society. \nThe main guest of the program will be artist Vojtěch Šeda\, the author of a large-format comic about the story of the Venus of Věstonice\, which was created for the exhibition The Second Life of Venus. At 10:30 he will present his work in a lecture. From 12:00 to 16:00 he will lead a comic workshop together with other lecturers\, where children and adults will try out how to create their own story in comic form. SUMMARY:Public  Dig Day at the Timberneck House
DESCRIPTION:The Fairfield Foundation will host a public dig at the Timberneck House to celebrate International Archaeology Day and Virginia Archaeology Month! \nBuilt in the 1790s\, Timberneck is a historic plantation house overlooking the York River in Gloucester County. Generations of the same family lived here until the early 2000s\, and today the house is preserved within Machicomoco State Park by the Fairfield Foundation. The site has a rich history of human activity\, dating back to Indigenous communities who lived and traveled along the waterways\, as well as enslaved and free African Americans\, tenant farmers\, and families who have cared for the property throughout the modern era. \nCurrent excavations are focused near the 1930s kitchen\, where archaeologists are uncovering artifacts such as 19th-century ceramic fragments\, glass\, and household items that help tell the everyday stories of the people who lived and worked at Timberneck. These digs provide the public with an opportunity to learn how archaeologists interpret the past and to see firsthand the materials that connect us to Virginia’s rich and layered history. \nAs part of the celebration\, Machicomoco State Park will also host its own archaeology program\, the Junior Ranger Program\, with us from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. For more information\, please contact the park by phone or email.

DESCRIPTION:The exhibition Romans and Germans in the Region under Pálava introduces visitors to the rich history of this area\, where the powerful Roman Empire came into contact with Germanic tribes. Through archaeological finds\, the exhibition illustrates everyday life as well as the broader cultural interactions that shaped the region. \nOn International Archaeology Day\, the program will include a guided tour of the exhibition at 3:00 PM. Visitors can also see a temporary display of objects found by amateur detectorists in cooperation with the museum\, offering a glimpse into how such collaborations contribute to archaeological knowledge. A photo corner with replicas of Roman helmets will be available\, and younger visitors can enjoy special activities designed for them.

She will introduce us to the study of disability in ancient Greece through a detailed case-study\, showing how a careful examination of material culture can reveal disability in the ancient world\, while challenging common misconceptions about attitudes towards disability in the ancient world. \nDr. Debby Sneed is assistant professor of classics at California State University\, Long Beach\, and an archaeologist whose research focuses on disability in ancient Greece. She is also field director of the Agora Excavations in Athens\, conducted by the American School of Classical Studies in Athens\, which is the preeminent research center for US scholars and students studying Greek culture from antiquity to the present. She earned a Ph.D. in archaeology from UCLA\, and an MA in classics from the University of Colorado at Boulder.

SUMMARY:Archaeology in a Bonsai Garden
DESCRIPTION:1. The guided tour of the Clark Bonsai Museum exhibits in a beautiful garden. Contained plants are an ancient tradition found in several cultures\, related to medicinal\, culinary\, religious and artistic practices. Miniature trees\, called bonsai\, are related to Japanese\, Chinese\, and East Asian cultures. They are living artifacts and artworks\, made to look ancient\, and some of them are a thousand of years old. The art of bonsai involves the reading of the surface roots in the soil\, the thickness\, texture\, and scars on the trunk\, and the twisted and dead branches\, in order to appreciate the ancientness of the tree\, and the classification of bonsai styles\, similar to how archaeologists study the dates and styles of pots and other artifacts. This tour will allow participants to see and appreciate the conceptual connections between archaeology and the art of bonsai.\n2. Promotion of archaeology at the Museum. There will be a considerable number people at the Museum on a weekend of the International Archaeology Day. The Society will have a table where our board members will promote the importance of archaeology and studies of civilizations\, disseminate knowledge\, hand out information\, and recruit more members to the Society.
