Please join us for a free lecture to kick off our anniversary celebration by Dr. Eric Cline\, titled “1177 BC Revisited: Updating the Late Bronze Age Collapse”\, on Thursday\, October 16th at 6pm in Rogers Auditorium (McCool Hall\, room 100). \nDr. Eric H. Cline is Professor of Classics and Anthropology\, the former Chair of the Department of Classical and Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations\, and the current Director of the Capitol Archaeological Institute at George Washington University\, in Washington DC. A two-time Fulbright Scholar\, National Geographic Explorer\, NEH Public Scholar\, Getty Scholar\, and member of the Explorers Club\, with degrees from Dartmouth\, Yale\, and the University of Pennsylvania\, he is an active field archaeologist with more than 30 seasons of excavation and survey experience in Israel\, Egypt\, Jordan\, Cyprus\, Greece\, Crete\, and the United States\, including ten seasons at Megiddo (1994-2014)\, where he served as co-director before retiring from the project in 2014\, and another ten seasons at Tel Kabri\, where he currently serves as Co-Director. He is the author or editor of more than twenty books and nearly one hundred articles; translations of his books have appeared in nineteen different languages. He is perhaps best known for 1177 BC: The Year Civilization Collapsed\, which has sold more than a quarter of a million copies world-wide and was considered for a Pulitzer Prize in 2015. Two of his lectures on the topic\, posted on YouTube by the sponsoring societies\, have been viewed a total of more than ten million times. \nAbstract:\nFor more than three hundred years during the Late Bronze Age\, from about 1500 BC to 1200 BC\, the Mediterranean region played host to a complex international world in which Egyptians\, Mycenaeans\, Minoans\, Hittites\, Assyrians\, Babylonians\, Cypriots\, and Canaanites all interacted\, creating a cosmopolitan and globalized world-system such as has only rarely been seen before the current day. It may have been this very internationalism that contributed to the apocalyptic disaster that ended the Bronze Age. When the end came\, as it did after centuries of cultural and technological evolution\, the civilized and international world of the Mediterranean regions came to a dramatic halt in a vast area stretching from Greece and Italy in the west to Egypt\, Canaan\, and Mesopotamia in the east. Large empires and small kingdoms collapsed rapidly. It was not until centuries later that a new cultural renaissance emerged in Greece and the other affected areas\, setting the stage for the evolution of Western society as we know it today. In recent years\, more data relevant to the potential causes of the Late Bronze Age Collapse in the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean have become available. The new information includes additional texts from Ugarit in north Syria documenting both famine and invaders; DNA analyses of burials found in the Philistine city of Ashkelon; and new studies of lake sediments\, stalagmites in caves\, and coring from lakes and lagoons in regions stretching from Italy and Greece to Turkey\, Syria\, Lebanon\, Israel\, and Iran\, all of which suggest that there was an ongoing megadrought. Studying such an ancient catastrophe remains relevant to us today\, for we are not as far removed from those days as one might think.

SUMMARY:Matrilineal Kinship in Aegean Prehistory: Settlements\, Figurines\, and the Absence of Men
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Sabina Cveček \nWere communities in prehistoric Greece matriarchal\, matrilineal\, or simply centered around women? This question has fascinated archaeologists for decades. Early on\, figurines of women were often seen as “Mother Goddesses\,” meaning female deities often representing motherhood\, fertility\, and creation\, but feminist scholars later cautioned against such broad interpretations. Still\, the idea that ancient societies may have been organized around maternal kinship and matrilineal descent—where family ties pass through the mother—has resurfaced in recent years. In this talk\, Sabina Cveček revisits the debate\, exploring what different types of evidence—from how settlements were laid out to how figurines were used—can tell us about gender and family life in the Neolithic and Early Bronze Age Aegean. She draws on ethnographic examples to show that matrilineal kinship does not automatically mean women ruled\, a key distinction for better understanding how these early societies were structured. DESCRIPTION:Join National Park Service Archaeologist Dan Zoto for a guided walk of the Nauset Marsh Trail to learn about the archaeology\, geology\, and history of the Nauset estuary. The program will include an approximate 20-minute terrace talk at the Salt Pond Visitor Center and a 1.5-hour trail walk. Topics will include Native American and historical period land use. The trail is 1.3 miles and classified as easy with some long steps\, moderate grade\, and an elevation change of 37 feet. The event is free. Rain or shine.

SUMMARY:Sacred Dancers of the Goddess Hathor
DESCRIPTION:In the cult of the ancient goddess Hathor\, many important rites of based in the performance of dance and music. These dances were performed by (primarily) women in professional dance troupes called khener. In such rituals the power of music and movement were harnessed to transport the worshipper into an ecstatic encounter with the Divine. Worshippers engaged in nocturnal rituals for the goddess Hathor sought this type of ecstatic encounter. Ancient Egyptian texts preserve the name of this sacred dance (ksks) and document the ritual processions of Nubians into Egypt as they accompanied the return of the goddess Hathor who was believed to reside in Nubia and return annually to Egypt. DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, October 18th is International Archaeology Day\, and the Frontier Culture Museum is offering archaeological activities all day! \nBut just what is archaeology and why are we talking about it at a living history museum? Archaeology is the study of patterns of material culture\, the tangible things that people made and used. Things that are still around\, just in the ground beneath us. Archaeology gives us a snapshot of the past. Objects enter the ground\, a house decays leaving only the foundation. We only get to see the remnants\, not the activity. History\, on the other hand\, is the study of human behavior in the past\, based on the records people themselves have left behind. You can see where one might inform the other. Both involve asking questions\, forming hypotheses and doing research. \nWe look at all of these clues\, carefully piece the fragments of a moment in time together\, and create a picture of what life was like\, for example\, on the frontier.

SUMMARY:Medzinárodný deň archeológie v SNM - Archeologickom múzeu
DESCRIPTION:Medzinárodný archeologický deň vznikol ako aktivita archeológov v Spojených štátoch amerických v roku 2011. Koná sa od vtedy každoročne tretiu sobotu v októbri. SNM – Archeologické múzeum je súčasťou Medzinárodného archeologického dňa od roku 2017. Organizáciou tohto špecializovaného dňa u nás\, sa usilujeme zvýšiť povedomie o archeológii\, spropagovať tento odbor u verejnosti a dostať do povedomia aj výstavy a aktivity SNM – Archeologického múzea. \nSNM – Archeologické múzeum bude v tento deň – v sobotu 18.10. 2025 – otvorené od 10:00 do 17:00. \nProgram:\nO 10:30 sa zameriame na rodiny s deťmi prostredníctvom programu HRAVO O HRADOCH. Deti aj s rodičmi najskôr prevedieme výstavou Život na hradoch a hrádkoch s komentárom zrozumiteľným pre deti. Následne sa presunieme do interaktívno – tvorivej výstavy Hravo o hradoch\, ktorá bežným návštevníkom nie je prístupná\, ale len objednaným skupinám. Tu si s deťmi dotvoríme malý model hradu\, vyrazíme si vlastnú pamätnú mincu kráľa Bela IV. alebo Žigmunda Luxemburského\, pripravíme a zapečatíme si listinu\, zahráme sa s rôznymi modelmi\, hrami a aktivitami na tému hradov. Deti sa môžu napríklad poobliekať do dobových odevov\, “navariť” jedlo v stredovekej kuchyni\, postaviť si hrad\, zahrať sa rôzne hry\, ale aj hrad dobyť. \nV prípade dobrého počasia sa deti môžu v predobedných hodinách na nádvorí múzea zahrať na archeológov v pripravenom pieskovisku\, ale aj na stredovekých rytierov\, či rímskych legionárov. \nVstupné na túto časť podujatia je jednotné 5€. \nO 15:00 otvoríme novú výstavu GRÉCKY ZÁZRAK VOJTECHA ZAMAROVSKÉHO. Výstavu SNM – Archeologické múzeum pripravilo v spolupráci s Klubom priateľov Vojtecha Zamarovského. \nVojtech Zamarovský (* 5. 10. 1919 Trenčín\, † 26. 7. 2006 Praha) bol významným slovenským spisovateľom literatúry faktu. Vo svojich knihách sa venoval starovekým kultúram. Je autorom 11 pôvodných kníh\, 3 prerozprávaní významných diel staroveku a viacerých prekladov. Jeho diela boli vydané vo viacerých vydaniach\, v 11-tich jazykových mutáciách. Za svoje diela získal množstvo rôznych významných ocenení. \nStaroveké Grécko bolo pre Vojtecha Zamarovského srdcovou záležitosťou. Výstava prezentuje “Oživený Grécky zázrak” v podobe kópii antických sôch. Spisovateľ Vojtech Zamarovský ich dostal do daru od Gréckej republiky v roku 2000 pre pripravované Múzeum Antiky. Je jediným slovenským autorom\, ktorý bol Grékmi obdarovaný takouto cennou kolekciou kópii antických sôch a reliéfov. Vojtech Zamarovský bol ocenený v roku 2006 aj prefektúrou Atén\, za svoju tvorbu a príspevok k šíreniu helenizmu na Slovensku a v celom regióne strednej a východnej Európy\, cenou Veľvyslanec helenizmu. Jedna z jeho kníh – Bohovia a hrdinovia antických bájí (1965) bola preložená do Gréčtiny ako učebnica do gréckych škôl. Jeho život sprevádzal „ grécky zázrak“. \nPočas otvorenia výstavy bude prezentovaný fotografický materiál a dokumenty súvisiace s Vojtechom Zamarovským\, ako aj predmety z jeho pozostalosti\, či ďalšie exponáty získané členmi Klubu Vojtecha Zamarovského pre Múzeum Antiky Vojtecha Zamarovského. \nOtvorenie výstavy je spojené aj s prednáškou Ing. arch. Júliusa Brunu\, predsedu Klubu priateľov Vojtecha Zamarovského. Porozpráva nám o ich priateľskom vzťahu\, o vzniku Klubu priateľov Vojtecha Zamarovského\, dare Gréckej vlády aj o Múzeu Antiky. Prostredníctvom rozprávania pána Brunu a zážitkov spojených s Vojtechom Zamarovským si môžeme bližšie priblížiť jeho osobnosť a dielo. \nTáto časť podujatia je bezplatná.

DESCRIPTION:This year’s International Archaeology Day at the Pavlov Archeopark will connect archaeology with fine arts and popular culture. The main theme is comics as a way of telling the past\, which can bring the world of prehistory closer in a playful and understandable way. We will also focus on the accompanying exhibition The Second Life of Venus\, which commemorates the famous anniversary of the discovery of the Venus of Věstonice and 100 years of its “second life” in our culture and society. \nThe main guest of the program will be artist Vojtěch Šeda\, the author of a large-format comic about the story of the Venus of Věstonice\, which was created for the exhibition The Second Life of Venus. At 10:30 he will present his work in a lecture. From 12:00 to 16:00 he will lead a comic workshop together with other lecturers\, where children and adults will try out how to create their own story in comic form. We expect to be finishing on our excavation to locate the north wall of blockhouse #4\, if anything remains to be found.\n(Ground penetrating radar seems to indicate a linear feature in that area.)\nCurrent Fort Brewerton Historical Society members are welcome to assist in the excavation\, members of the public are welcome to observe.
