SUMMARY:Dr. Scott S. Williams: “The Galleon Santo Cristo de Burgos\, Oregon’s Beeswax Wreck”
DESCRIPTION:The Galleon Santo Cristo de Burgos left the Philippine Islands for the Port of Acapulco in New Spain (Mexico) in July 1693\, loaded with Asian luxury goods of silk\, fine cottons\, porcelain\, spices\, art\, and beeswax\, in large blocks and candles. The ship\, undermanned and with an inexperienced captain\, somehow went hundreds of miles off course to wreck near the Nehalem River in northern Oregon\, where survivors of the wreck lived with coastal Nehalem and Clatsop Indians. Goods from the ship itself were recovered by an archaeologist from the Oregon State Parks and Maritime Archeology Society. Scott Williams\, Principal Investigator of the Beeswax Wreck Project and President of the Maritime Archaeological Society\, will tell the story of the Society’s 16-year research project into the identity and location of the wreck\, and discuss the latest finds. Dr. Williams is the Cultural Resources Program Manager at the Washington State Department of Transportation.

SUMMARY:Using isotopic data to understand mobility and economic integration between coastal and interior settlements in Late Prehistoric Portugal
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Waterman (Associate Professor of Biology\, Mt. Mercy University) is the 2020 recipient of the AIA Archaeology of Portugal Fellowship and is excited to present her research to our society. Please join us as she enlightens us about the Portuguese Estremadura’s Late Neolithic through Early Bronze Age (c.3500-1500 BCE) periods. Large fortified coastal and interior settlements from the area demonstrate the emergence and later collapse of socially-complex non-state societies. While these habitations were economically and socially integrated\, direct evidence of this integration is lacking. In this presentation stable and radiogenic isotopic data from human and animal samples recovered from the Late Prehistoric settlement sites of Vila Nova de São Pedro (VNSP) Zambujal\, and Leceia are compared in order to discern patterns of human and domestic animal mobility between the sites.

DESCRIPTION:Join us to explore storied Athens and its celebrated ancient monuments before flying to legendary Crete\, Greece’s largest island and the place that gave rise to Europe’s first advanced civilization. After visiting fascinating sites and museums in and around Heraklion\, we will embark the lovely Callisto\, which is akin to a private yacht rather than a cruise ship and accommodates only 34 guests. \nCruise to several of the most beautiful and historically important Greek islands. Some of the islands we will explore\, such as Santorini\, are well known\, while others\, such as Amorgos and Sifnos\, are less known and yet considered to be the gems of the Greek archipelago. Beyond the bounds of mass tourism\, they remain unspoiled\, retaining their original character\, and their ancient sites are devoid of large groups of visitors. A special feature of the cruise is the inclusion of the small\, uninhabited\, and seldom-visited islet\nof Despotiko\, which was an important sanctuary of Apollo in antiquity. Ongoing excavations under Greek archaeologist Yannos Kourayos have revealed major structures\, including the Temple of Apollo\, now partially restored. \nYour engaging AIA expert\, Professor Shelmerdine\, will offer a series of onboard lectures and informal discussions\, and local guides will illuminate the sites on every excursion ashore. SUMMARY:Atlatl Demonstrations at Poverty Point World Heritage Site
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, October 22nd\, 9:30am-3pm\n$ = $4 park admission fee\, visitors 3 and under and 62 and older admitted free.\nFamily friendly \nVisitors to Poverty Point World Heritage Site are invited to take part in ranger-led demonstrations on Saturday\, October 22nd. Rangers will be using an atlatl (spear-thrower) to launch throwing spears or darts at a target to showcase the deadly force wielded by the Native American people of Poverty Point. Interested attendees will be able to participate and use an atlatl as well. This event is weather permitting. \nScheduled demos will take place next to the Archaeology Lab on site at 9:30 a.m.\, 11 am\, and 2 p.m. Unscheduled demos are also available throughout the day when staffing permits. \nPoverty Point World Heritage Site offers visitors the unique opportunity to experience and learn about the earthworks and those individuals who raised them from the ground between the years of 1700 and 1100 BCE. The $4 admission fee provides access to the museum\, film theatre\, hiking trail\, driving tour\, seasonal tram tour\, and any interpretive events taking place at the site. SUMMARY:Celebration of International Archaeology Day (IAD). William J. Roberts Lecture: The Galleon Santo Cristo de Burgos\, Oregon’s Beeswax Wreck
DESCRIPTION:Lecturer: Scott Williams\, Maritime Archaeological Society \nThe Spanish galleon Santo Cristo de Burgos left the Philippine Islands for the Port of Acapulco in New Spain (Mexico) in July 1693\, loaded with Asian luxury goods of silk\, fine cottons\, porcelain\, spices\, art- and beeswax\, in large blocks and candles. The ship\, undermanned and with an inexperienced captain\, somehow went hundreds of miles off course to wreck near the Nehalem River in norther Oregon\, where survivors of the wrecking lived with the coastal Nehalem and Clatsop Indians. Good from the ship were traded by the local tribes\, and the exotic materials were incorporated into their traditional culture. The ship was carrying so much beeswax\, that the Indians brought it to American and British fur traders to trade\, and by the end of the 19th century so much beeswax had been mined from the spit that non-locals refused to believe it came from a shipwreck. In 2020 and 2022\, parts of the ship itself were recovered by archaeologists from Oregon State Parks and the Maritime Archaeological Society. Scott Williams\, Principal Investigator of the Beeswax Wreck Project and President of the Maritime Archaeological Society\, will tell the story of the Society’s 16-year research project into the identity and location of the wreck\, and discuss the latest finds.

SUMMARY:Site visit to the Meet the Phoenicians of Malta exhibition at the National Museum of Archaeology\, Valletta
DESCRIPTION:Led by Mr. David Cardona\, Senior Curator\, Phoenician\, Roman and Medieval Sites\, Heritage Malta. Mr. Cardona will also take members round the Phoenician and Punic gallery on the top floor of the museum. \nA Phoenician stone sarcophagus excavated last year at Għajn Klieb\, on the outskirts of Rabat\,Malta is one of the major attractions in this exhibition. It brings to light the results of months of painstaking studies by a multidisciplinary team researching the sarcophagus and two other tombs discovered in the area\, as well as their contents. The three tombs\, although inherently different\, shed light on the burial rituals of the earliest Phoenicians on the island.

DESCRIPTION:The Center for Ecological Education of the Liberec Region\, The Bohemian Paradise House of Nature\, together with other partners\, invite you to an archeological excursion to one of the most naturally valuable and attractive localities of the Český Ráj PLA – to the settlement and hillfort “Hrada and Klamorna na Mužském”. The heritage-protected area is one of the most important archaeological sites in Bohemia with abundant evidence of settlement during the last ten thousand years. Through the guided tour\, we will get a glimpse into another of the stories of the landscape of sandstone rocks.\nThe prehistoric highland settlement of Hrada and Klamorna\, on whose edge rock blocks were built in the High Middle Ages two fortified guard castles\, originally formed a single unit with an area of ​​19 hectares. The site was visited by people as early as the end of the hunter-gatherer period\, it was continuously inhabited from the end of the 6th millennium BC by Neolithic farmers\, then by the carriers of the Eneolithic cultures and later in the Bronze Age\, when the area was most likely first fortified by people of the Lusatian culture. Hrada and Klamorna was repopulated in the late Hallstatt period\, in the Latenian period and then by the Slavs in the early Middle Ages with the restoration of the fort approximately between 800 and 950. His research focuses on the history\, economy\, and trade of figural marble sculpture. He has over a decade of field experience in the Athenian Agora\, where he supervises excavations in the industrial and residential neighborhood behind the Stoa Poikile. Dr. Martens received his Ph.D. from Oxford University.
