SUMMARY:Arkansas ArcheOlympics
DESCRIPTION:The ArcheOlympics is an annual competition that brings together teams of archeology students\, Arkansas Archeological Society members\, middle school students\, and anyone else interested in archeology and having fun. The games consist of 3 events in which teams compete to show off their skills and knowledge in archeology-based games. The first is throwing a spear with an atlatl. This takes some skill\, so most teams get together and practice before the event. Archeoletes throw for both distance and accuracy during the competition. The second event is the trivia contest. This event changes slightly each year based on the gameshow format that we choose\, but archeoletes answer questions about archeology\, important archeological sites\, archeological ethics\, and other topics related to the theme. The third event is the Excavation to Curation Obstacle course. The course changes slightly each year\, but teams work together to make their way through the simulated stages of archeological research. Teams work together to earn the most points throughout the day to win the 3D printed trophy!

DESCRIPTION:The Department of Anthropology\, Geospatial and Earth Sciences (AGES) at Indiana University of Pennsylvania will hold its FREE annual Community Archaeology Day on Saturday\, October 10\, from 12:00-3:00 PM. Interactive displays and hands-on activities will be held on the ground floor of McElhaney Hall and outside on the lawn adjacent to the building. Learn about the archaeology of Indiana County and try your hand at technologies such as spear throwing\, flint knapping\, and crafting pottery. Enjoy interactive games and mock excavations\, touch artifacts from area archaeological sites\, watch artifacts print in 3D\, tour our archaeological laboratories\, and watch metal detection and ground penetrating radar in action. A children’s activity room for kids (and the young at heart) will include crafting pottery using indigenous methods\, stenciling “cave art”\, wampum beading\, and other fun activities for kids of all ages. Why did temple walls become increasingly dense\, visual\, and symbolically rich? SUMMARY:Valor at Valcour:  Revolutionary War Wrecks in Lake Champlain and a Vision for Exhibiting US Navy’s Underwater Archaeology
DESCRIPTION:To commemorate the 250th Anniversary of the US Navy and the Battle of Valcour Island\, the Naval History and Heritage Command is highlighting two significant wrecks which represent ongoing but diverse research projects. \nThese wrecks represent some of the earliest of surviving examples of American naval forces\, and provide opportunities to study and elaborate on early naval history\, battle tactics\, living conditions aboard naval craft\, and ship design. \nRoyal Savage was Benedict Arnold’s flagship early in the battle and was in the immediate line of fire when the British entered Valcour Bay. The schooner ran aground before burning and sinking off Valcour Island. It was raised 158 years later\, disassembled\, then stored over the next 81 years before being returned in pieces to NHHC for documentation\, study\, and reconstruction in the form of scale models. \nIn stark contrast\, the gunboat Spitfire still rests intact on the Lake Champlain lakebed in remarkable condition and has been recently visited and documented by Lake Champlain Maritime Museum and NHHC\, with further work planned to preserve this sole intact in situ US naval vessel from the Revolutionary War. \nThis presentation will focus on the history and archaeology of the battle and of these specific wrecks from Valcour. At the end of the presentation\, we will introduce a new project for the Navy and partners\, with a long-term goal of recovering and conserving a rare WWII artifact for display in the planned new National Museum of the US Navy.

DESCRIPTION:Indigenous to the Americas and cultivated by Native peoples for thousands of years\, tobacco was introduced to Europeans in the 16th century\, and by the early 17th century\, it had spread across the globe. In Puritan New England\, religious leaders condemned tobacco as sinful while early practitioners used it as medicine. Clay tobacco pipes commonly found at 17th-century archaeological sites in Massachusetts reveal widespread use despite strict social and religious restrictions. Drawing from her new book\, The Tobacco Takers: Puritanism\, Smoking\, Health\, and the Archaeology of Bodily Care (Bloomsbury Publishing\, 2026)\, Diana DiPaolo Loren\, deputy director for curatorial affairs and senior curator at Harvard’s Peabody Museum\, will share archaeological\, archival\, and visual evidence that recasts tobacco and tobacco pipes as tools of bodily care for both physical and metaphysical ailments. The program will include a conversation with archaeologist Stephen W. Silliman. \nCopies of The Tobacco Takers will be available for purchase after the program. DESCRIPTION:TWO LANDS\, TWO WORLDS\, ONE HUMAN | IAD 2026 \nSATURDAY | 17 OCTOBER 2026 | 9:00–16:00 | FREE ENTRY \nArcheopark Pavlov invites you to International Archaeology Day on Saturday\, 17 October. This year’s programme will connect two seemingly distant worlds: Palaeolithic southern Moravia and Tierra del Fuego at the very southern tip of South America. The full-day programme will include guided tours\, a lecture\, an exhibition and a themed game\, all available free of charge throughout the day. \nGuided tours of the permanent exhibition will take place at 10:00\, 12:00 and 14:00\, introducing visitors to the world of the mammoth hunters who lived beneath the Pálava Hills 30\,000 years ago. \nAn important part of the programme will also be the accompanying exhibition Tierra del Fuego\, which has been on display at Archeopark Pavlov since May this year. \nThe exhibition explores the lives of the Indigenous peoples of Tierra del Fuego\, one of the most remote and harshest regions on our planet. Drawing on archaeological\, ethnological and ethnoarchaeological knowledge\, it presents their everyday lives\, subsistence strategies\, rituals and mythology. It also highlights the remarkable ability of humans to adapt to extreme conditions and reflects on how easily our first impressions of another culture can distort our ideas of what “civilisation” means. \nAt 13:00\, the programme will continue with a lecture by Jiří Svoboda\, the exhibition’s author\, who will take visitors deeper into the world of Tierra del Fuego and the themes explored in the exhibition. \nThroughout the day\, visitors will also be able to take part in a themed game directly in the exhibition\, exploring the stories of Tierra del Fuego\, and in particular the stories of travellers and researchers who set out to discover and study this distant world. The game is aimed primarily at older children and adults and offers another way to explore the subject. \nThis year\, International Archaeology Day at Archeopark Pavlov will connect two distant parts of the world and two different periods of human history. Although they are separated by thousands of kilometres and tens of thousands of years\, both bring us face to face with the human being\, their ability to adapt to their environment\, create their own culture and find ways to live and survive in the world around them. \nProgramme subject to change. DESCRIPTION:Grab your curiosity and gear up for a day of discovery at the Passaic County Archaeology Center in Ringwood\, New Jersey! We are throwing open our doors from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM for an action-packed day of hands-on history. Whether you are a lifelong history buff looking to sharpen your skills\, seeking a unique weekend outing\, or a family ready for an interactive adventure\, there is something incredible waiting for everyone. Come connect with local history\, try something completely new\, and help us celebrate the cultural treasures of our community. \nThe day begins with fresh pastries and coffee paired with a lecture introducing the world of archaeology and the hidden history buried right here in Passaic County. From there\, visitors can step behind the scenes for a guided lab and gallery tour to see exactly where real historical discoveries are analyzed and how. The excitement continues outdoors with a live flintknapping demonstration where you can watch sparks fly as stone tools are crafted by hand. Attendees can also master the compass in an interactive grid-mapping challenge\, learning exactly how to survey a site just like professional archaeologists. A realistic mock excavation sandbox offers an authentic\, hands-on dig experience\, though space is strictly limited to ten eager participants. Finally\, history enthusiasts of all ages can test their skills at an artifact mending station\, sorting and piecing together broken pottery fragments to learn how experts identify and catalog artifacts. DESCRIPTION:Members of the Visual Resources division of Princeton University’s Department of Art and Archaeology have partnered with The Princeton Public Library for this event. Research from CCI’s payroll records adds new insights into the data recovered from archaeological excavations at four camps dating from 1900-1920\, telling the story of the cordwood choppers and their families’ everyday life in the northern forest.

SUMMARY:Knapping the First Tools: Teen Saturdays Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Knapping\, or chipping sharp edges into stone\, is one of the earliest known technologies. Millions of years ago\, our ancestors learned to shape stone tools for hunting and survival. In this workshop\, teens (ages 13–18) will explore how early stone tools were made and why they matter. \nWork with Dylan Flicker\, a PhD student in Archaeology\, to see how striking a rock in just the right way can turn it into a useful tool. Try your hand at safely shaping and using stone tools to understand the skill\, precision\, and problem-solving involved in this ancient technology. Participants attending this workshop should wear closed-toe shoes and long pants. \nTeen Saturdays Workshops are offered bilingually in Spanish and English. They are designed to build community and improve the museum experience for multicultural teens. SUMMARY:New Insights into the Ancient Landscape of Abydos and the Early Town of Abydos
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, Oct. 17\nInternational Archaeology Day Event!\n3:30 pm EST\nIn-person only at the Penn Museum\, Classroom L2\nNo registration required \nSpeaker: Dr. Sameh Iskander\, Co-Director of the New York University mission to the temple of Ramesses II in Abydos \nTitle: New Insights into the Ancient Landscape of Abydos and the Early Town of Abydos \nAbstract:\nIn this lecture\, I will share our recent archaeological findings at Abydos\, conducted under the auspices of New York University-ISAW. Our work has uncovered significant insights into the ancient landscape of Abydos\, spanning several key periods during the Late Old Kingdom\, Ramessides\, and Late Antiquity.\nOne of our noteworthy findings is a massive mud brick enclosure wall dated to the Late Old Kingdom\, which runs under parts of the temples of Ramesses II and Ramesses IV and extends further north. This wall includes a well-preserved limestone gateway. Excavations within this enclosure space revealed two mud brick houses dating to the late Sixth Dynasty. Additionally\, in a separate area within this enclosure to the south\, we unearthed a large number of kilns\, all dated also to the same period. These findings provide compelling evidence of an early Sixth Dynasty town situated on the edge of the Abydos floodplain.\nElsewhere to the south\, we conducted comprehensive excavations and restorations of the entire precinct surrounding Ramesses II’s temple. Our research revealed that the temple precinct was occupied almost continuously from the time of its construction in the thirteenth century B.C. until the eighth century A.D. providing fascinating insights into the subsequent historical periods. I’ll also briefly review the restoration work at the temple of Ramesses IV.\nDated to a much later period\, we uncovered a late 5th-century A.D. mud brick church that showcases early Coptic architectural style\, adding another layer to site’s long history data and its evolving landscape through the ages. \nSpeaker Bio:\nDr. Sameh Iskander is a Research Associate and co-Director of the New York University-Institute for the Study of the Ancient World Expedition to the Temple of Ramses II in Abydos. He is the co-author of three books (with Dr. Ogden Goelet) entitled The Temple of Ramesses II in Abydos Volumes 1\, 2 and 3 (Lockwood Press 2015\, 2021\, and 2022). He is also the editor of two books entitled Archeological Discoveries at the Temple of Ramesses II in Abydos\, Volumes 1 and 2 (Lockwood Press 2025\, and 2026). \nDr. Iskander received his PhD from New York University in Ancient Egyptian History and culture. His main research and publications are primarily concerned with the archeology and history of the ancient Egyptian Ramesside Period. More recently\, he also focused on the history and archeology of the ancient Egyptian settlements during the Late Old Kingdom and First Intermediate Period.
