DESCRIPTION:Join Dr. Jessica Dello Russo for an engaging exploration of the Jewish catacombs of ancient Rome and the discoveries that are transforming our understanding of Jewish life and burial practices in antiquity. A specialist in Roman topography\, funerary archaeology\, and the history of archaeology\, Dr. Dello Russo has developed and curated major scholarly initiatives\, including the DAPICS image archive\, the BiblioSelect research indices\, the Luminaria blog\, and the ongoing digitization of the archives of ICS founder Estelle Shohet Brettman. \nDr. Dello Russo’s archaeological and archival research has yielded significant discoveries\, including pieces of the renowned “Sarcophagus of the Menorah” from the Jewish Catacombs of Vigna Randanini\, the rediscovery of the long-inaccessible Jewish catacomb of Vigna Cimarra\, and previously unpublished documentation from the earliest excavations of Rome’s Jewish catacombs. These findings have shed new light on the history and preservation of these extraordinary underground cemeteries. Drawing on her doctoral research\, Dr. Dello Russo will discuss the history\, archaeology\, and enduring significance of Rome’s Jewish catacombs\, offering fresh insights into one of the oldest Jewish communities in the Diaspora and the remarkable subterranean monuments that preserve its legacy.

Here’s a description of the talk from the speaker:\nA fifth-century Athenian wedding vase in the British Museum depicts a bride seated on her marriage bed\, gazing into a mirror as attendants bring gifts. Dr. Sheramy Bundrick reexamines this evocative scene and the vessel’s archaeological history\, exploring ancient Greek marriage\, women’s social networks\, ritual\, and death. From wedding celebration to funerary offering\, the vase reveals the many lives—and meanings—an ancient object could possess. \nAbout the speaker:\nDr. Sheramy Bundrick is Professor of Art History at the University of South Florida and a specialist in ancient Greek art. She earned her Ph.D. from Emory University and has received fellowships and grants from The Metropolitan Museum of Art\, the Fulbright Foundation\, the Archaeological Institute of America\, and the American Academy in Rome. She is the author of two books and numerous studies on Athenian vase painting and ancient Greek art.

As an Assyriologist\, Dr. Odette Boivin had the opportunity to work on a few hundreds of cuneiform tablets from the Koldewey expedition and examine in detail the recording of their archaeological context (Project Governance in Babylon 2021-2026). Her lecture discusses the approach preconized by Koldewey’s team for retrieving\, recording and handling written artefacts and the methods used they deployed. She presents also a few examples of how they were able to deduce information that was not recorded explicitly.
