DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Odette Boivin (University of Toronto) – focuses on archival\, everyday Babylonian documents and historiographic sources.  \nRobert Koldewey and his team excavated in Babylon between 1899 and 1917\, carrying out foundational work for our understanding of the city of Babylon and contributing to develop and establish archaeological standards in the early days of the discipline. As an Assyriologist\, Dr. Odette Boivin had the opportunity to work on a few hundreds of cuneiform tablets from the Koldewey expedition and examine in detail the recording of their archaeological context (Project Governance in Babylon 2021-2026). Her lecture discusses the approach preconized by Koldewey’s team for retrieving\, recording and handling written artefacts and the methods used they deployed. She presents also a few examples of how they were able to deduce information that was not recorded explicitly.

DESCRIPTION:Matthew Schmader (University of New Mexico) \nThe huge exploration led by Francisco Vázquez de Coronado was the first contact between Ancestral Rio Grande Pueblos and outsiders. Its intended goals failed and\nthe expedition spent the whole winter of 1540-1541 camped in village that was taken over from Southern Tiwa residents. Distrust and strife broke out into outright\nhostilities called the Tiguex War. Investigations of architecture\, materials\, and artifact patterning from a major site of the war\, located north of Albuquerque\, are presented.

SUMMARY:Reconsidering the Rise of a Newly Discovered Iron Age Kingdom in Anatolia: Great King Hartapu and the Türkmen-Karahöyük Archaeological Project
DESCRIPTION:Lecture by James Osborne\, University of Chicago \nAbsttract: Since the 2019 discovery of a royal inscription authored by “Great King Hartapu\,” Iron Age Anatolian scholarship has been energised by the appearance of a hitherto unknown kingdom in the Konya Plain. While the historical context of Hartapu’s inscriptions have undergone dramatic reassessment in light of this new text\, little attention has been paid to the conditions that would have contributed to the rise of this kingdom in the first place. This lecture proposes several factors that likely played a role in the emergence of the kingdom: cultural and economic interaction with the Neo-Assyrian Empire\, similar relations with Phrygia\, emulative competition with its local peer polities and a propitious ecological setting at a time of significant environmental transformations. Results from newly launched excavations at Türkmen-Karahöyük\, almost certainly Hartapu’s capital city\, help illustrate these points. Interspersed with these arguments are reflections and anecdotes about Hartapu\, and especially the way we represent Hartapu visually\, that evoke how the effort we have spent on understanding political dynamics in Hartapu’s kingdom has been imbalanced toward the man himself\, with insufficient consideration having been given to longer term\, structural forces. Such reflections lead us to reconsider the disproportionately impactful effect of Hartapu’s monuments in the past and the present alike\, and the extent to which Hartapu’s kingdom in fact consisted of his own self-imaging.

Wilson will illuminate the extraordinary confluence of places\, people and conflict that has shaped our region. Artifacts\, belongings\, and landscapes are contrasted with the documentary record to explore the critical place of Indigenous peoples and Immigrant groups in the region’s history. This talk will touch on early exploration\, including colonial forts and explorer’s campsites\, including Spokane House\, and highlight the ongoing important connections between historic places and modern peoples.

DESCRIPTION:We invite you to join AIA lecturer and host Miriam Stark on a captivating journey through the rich history and vibrant culture of tropical Indochina on our luxurious tour of Vietnam and Cambodia along the majestic Mekong River. Spend two nights in the bustling metropolis of Ho Chi Minh City (still known as Saigon)\, a dynamic hub that exudes energy\, before embarking the exquisite\, 14-suite Mekong Princess\, a riverboat that embodies the gracious heritage and beauty of Southeast Asia\, combined with a romantic French colonial style and all the modern comforts. Her small size and ultra-shallow draft allow us to experience this mighty river from an intimate perspective. Throughout the journey\, Professor Stark will offer a series of lectures\, share insights into what you are seeing\, and encourage discussions. Local guides will accompany you on all excursions. Cruise the Mekong for seven nights\, from Ho Chi Minh City to Siem Reap. The Mekong takes us into the fascinating but seldom-visited world of one of\nAsia’s great waterways. Marvel at floating villages whose residents literally live on the water—working\, shopping\, and even attending school and church. Tour a family-owned orchard\, visit a noodle factory and a coconut candy maker\, and experiment with typical Vietnamese ingredients during a cooking demonstration. Conclude the program with three nights in Siem Reap\, where you can immerse yourself in the world-famous Khmer temples of Angkor\, designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Marvel at the remains of different capitals of the Khmer Empire\, including the iconic Angkor Wat and the Bayon Temple at Angkor Thom.
