SUMMARY:Celebration of International Archaeology Day (IAD). William J. Roberts Lecture: The Galleon Santo Cristo de Burgos\, Oregon’s Beeswax Wreck
DESCRIPTION:Lecturer: Scott Williams\, Maritime Archaeological Society \nThe Spanish galleon Santo Cristo de Burgos left the Philippine Islands for the Port of Acapulco in New Spain (Mexico) in July 1693\, loaded with Asian luxury goods of silk\, fine cottons\, porcelain\, spices\, art- and beeswax\, in large blocks and candles. The ship\, undermanned and with an inexperienced captain\, somehow went hundreds of miles off course to wreck near the Nehalem River in norther Oregon\, where survivors of the wrecking lived with the coastal Nehalem and Clatsop Indians. Good from the ship were traded by the local tribes\, and the exotic materials were incorporated into their traditional culture. The ship was carrying so much beeswax\, that the Indians brought it to American and British fur traders to trade\, and by the end of the 19th century so much beeswax had been mined from the spit that non-locals refused to believe it came from a shipwreck. In 2020 and 2022\, parts of the ship itself were recovered by archaeologists from Oregon State Parks and the Maritime Archaeological Society. Scott Williams\, Principal Investigator of the Beeswax Wreck Project and President of the Maritime Archaeological Society\, will tell the story of the Society’s 16-year research project into the identity and location of the wreck\, and discuss the latest finds.

SUMMARY:Site visit to the Meet the Phoenicians of Malta exhibition at the National Museum of Archaeology\, Valletta
DESCRIPTION:Led by Mr. David Cardona\, Senior Curator\, Phoenician\, Roman and Medieval Sites\, Heritage Malta. Mr. Cardona will also take members round the Phoenician and Punic gallery on the top floor of the museum. \nA Phoenician stone sarcophagus excavated last year at Għajn Klieb\, on the outskirts of Rabat\,Malta is one of the major attractions in this exhibition. It brings to light the results of months of painstaking studies by a multidisciplinary team researching the sarcophagus and two other tombs discovered in the area\, as well as their contents. The three tombs\, although inherently different\, shed light on the burial rituals of the earliest Phoenicians on the island.

SUMMARY:IAD in the UNESCO Global Geopark Bohemian Paradise 2022
DESCRIPTION:The Center for Ecological Education of the Liberec Region\, The Bohemian Paradise House of Nature\, together with other partners\, invite you to an archeological excursion to one of the most naturally valuable and attractive localities of the Český Ráj PLA – to the settlement and hillfort “Hrada and Klamorna na Mužském”. The heritage-protected area is one of the most important archaeological sites in Bohemia with abundant evidence of settlement during the last ten thousand years. Through the guided tour\, we will get a glimpse into another of the stories of the landscape of sandstone rocks.\nThe prehistoric highland settlement of Hrada and Klamorna\, on whose edge rock blocks were built in the High Middle Ages two fortified guard castles\, originally formed a single unit with an area of 19 hectares. The site was visited by people as early as the end of the hunter-gatherer period\, it was continuously inhabited from the end of the 6th millennium BC by Neolithic farmers\, then by the carriers of the Eneolithic cultures and later in the Bronze Age\, when the area was most likely first fortified by people of the Lusatian culture. Hrada and Klamorna was repopulated in the late Hallstatt period\, in the Latenian period and then by the Slavs in the early Middle Ages with the restoration of the fort approximately between 800 and 950. The tour with the archaeologist will also be devoted to settlement and farming on the rocks in the modern age\, historical paths in the sandstone bedrock and history of mining sandstone. \nMeeting place (and parking): Dneboh – Kavčina\, 50.5289000N\, 15.0289133E\nRoute length 3.5 km\, medium difficulty.\nRegistration: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScJVwiBzBsjtPt8dsHhKZR-iXU4v54VZoiQgP5My1rFE3pK2A/viewform

SUMMARY:After the Dig - studies from the Phoenician shipwreck. Lecture by Professor Timmy Gambin\, Associate Professor of Maritime Archaeology in the Department of Classics and Archaeology\, University of Malta.
DESCRIPTION:Those involved in any archaeological project know that for every hour spent excavating a site\, many more must be dedicated to post-excavation. One must rationalise\, analyse and interpret data that were gathered in the course of the project. Experts are brought in\, students offered research opportunities and all information gathered placed in a database. However\, simply producing and storing a number of disparate research strands is unsatisfactory. They need to be looked at holistically and woven into a narrative that can contribute to a better understanding of some facets of the human past. This talk explores various past and ongoing research projects that have emanated from the Phoenician Shipwreck Project following the conclusion of four excavation seasons in 2021. Although this research is still very much in ‘strand form’\, the audience will gain insight not just into current workings but also of the historical fabric that will hopefully be woven over the coming years.

SUMMARY:The State Museum of Pennsylvania’s Workshops in Archaeology: Pathways to the Past
DESCRIPTION:The theme of this year’s program centers around archaeology as a tool for discovering a pathway to the past. Archaeologists have identified physical pathways such as Indigenous foot paths\, portages\,\nand trade routes but there are also the pathways archaeology can offer in enriching\, and sometimes correcting narratives of the past. Pennsylvania’s landscape of rolling mountains\, plateaus and ridges\, and major river valleys were physical factors that influenced settlement of the Commonwealth. Foot paths created by Indigenous peoples thousands of years ago led to trade and exchange routes that eventually developed into roadways. River valleys served as transportation corridors for commerce and trade from Precontact throughout time defining the locations of communities. Some pathways are not as evident\, as in the underground railroad network that transported formerly enslaved peoples to communities here and elsewhere. Discovering the stories of the past can be a difficult emotional journey to uncovering heritage\, as is often true for the disenfranchised\, but their contributions to our Commonwealth’s development are important and the archaeological record is a pathway for sharing their stories. \nVisit https://www.paheritage.org/2022-annual-workshop-in-archaeology.html for more information. \nEarly registration ends October 24. Walk-in registration will be available at the door at $35 per person.

SUMMARY:Michigan Archaeology Day
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever thought about what it’s like to be an archaeologist? Here’s your chance to talk to archaeologists about investigations and artifacts that tell the story of 14\,000 years of Michigan history! \nThis FREE annual event returns to the Michigan History Center on Saturday\, October 29\, 2022. \nWe think you’re going to have a great time\, whether this is your first Archaeology Day or you come every year. Archaeologists who work in Michigan will be stationed throughout the first and second floors of the museum where they will tell you about their research\, show you some of the artifacts they have found and answer your questions. We’ll have hands-on activities for kids\, you can watch a flintknapper make stone tools and everyone can try throwing a spear using an atlatl. Feeling adventurous? Join a scavenger hunt! Have an artifact that you want to learn more about? Show it to our Archaeology Roadshow experts! With so many activities to choose from\, you may need to take a break. Join special presentations in the Forum auditorium. Tour the galleries\, make a clay pinch pot\, have a seat in the auditorium\, ask lots of questions and have fun! \nTo support the preservation of archaeological artifacts and sites\, no monetary values will be provided at this event. \nVisit the event agenda for details as they become available: https://www.miplace.org/archaeology-day/ \nMichigan Archaeology Day is presented in partnership by the Michigan History Center\, Department of Natural Resources\, State Historic Preservation Office and Michigan Economic Development Corporation.
