SUMMARY:The State Museum of Pennsylvania’s Workshops in Archaeology: Pathways to the Past
DESCRIPTION:The theme of this year’s program centers around archaeology as a tool for discovering a pathway to the past. Archaeologists have identified physical pathways such as Indigenous foot paths\, portages\,\nand trade routes but there are also the pathways archaeology can offer in enriching\, and sometimes correcting narratives of the past. Pennsylvania’s landscape of rolling mountains\, plateaus and ridges\, and major river valleys were physical factors that influenced settlement of the Commonwealth. Foot paths created by Indigenous peoples thousands of years ago led to trade and exchange routes that eventually developed into roadways. River valleys served as transportation corridors for commerce and trade from Precontact throughout time defining the locations of communities. Some pathways are not as evident\, as in the underground railroad network that transported formerly enslaved peoples to communities here and elsewhere. Discovering the stories of the past can be a difficult emotional journey to uncovering heritage\, as is often true for the disenfranchised\, but their contributions to our Commonwealth’s development are important and the archaeological record is a pathway for sharing their stories. \nVisit https://www.paheritage.org/2022-annual-workshop-in-archaeology.html for more information. \nEarly registration ends October 24. Walk-in registration will be available at the door at $35 per person.

SUMMARY:Andromeda\, Alexander\, and Ascalos: Founders and Foundation Myths in the Roman Near East
DESCRIPTION:The Tallahassee Society of the Archaeological Institute of America and the Student Archaeology Club at FSU present: \n“Andromeda\, Alexander\, and Ascalos: Founders and Foundation Myths in the Roman Near East” \nBy Robyn Le Blanc\, University of North Carolina\, Greensboro \nThe AIA Kershaw Lecture in Near Eastern Archaeology \nAdditional Funding by the AIA Father Bader Lecture in Mediterranean Archaeology \nWednesday\, November 2\, 2022 7:00 PM \nA Zoom Lecture: https://fsu.zoom.us/j/93621021276 \n  \nThis talk explores city founders and foundation myths in the Roman Near East. Depictions of these local traditions appear on civic coinage\, sculpture\, and on the “Caesarea bowl\,” and some are described by ancient authors such as Pliny and Pausanias. Foundation myths reflect ideas about the community and its past\, and helped forge and maintain cultural\, ethnic\, and kinship links between and within communities. \nRelevant website\, The Roman Provincial Coinage online: https://rpc.ashmus.ox.ac.uk

SUMMARY:Expanding the Spatial and Temporal Limits of the Pinson Mounds Landscape in Western Tennessee
DESCRIPTION:In this lecture\, Professor Ed Henry will discuss the monumental earthen architecture present at Pinson Mounds State Archaeological Park (PMSAP) in West Tennessee\, which features prominently in the archaeology of the American Midsouth. However\, the Johnston and Elijah Bray mound sites\, situated west and east of PMSAP respectively\, are considered the anchors in defining the broader Pinson Landscape. Recent research in this area has dramatically reshaped how archaeologists might consider the temporal and spatial extent of this enigmatic Middle Woodland landscape and its ties to Hopewell societies in the eastern U.S. In my lecture I will discuss the field verification of new monumental features at Johnston\, new and unusual subsurface features identified at PMSAP\, and the first archaeological investigations of the Elijah Bray site. Our new discoveries reveal how our knowledge of this unique area expands our understandings of\, and approach to studying\, deeply used places in the archaeological record.

SUMMARY:The Earliest Pottery in the World
DESCRIPTION:A lecture hosted by the Long Island Society of the AIA. \nIlaria Patania\, a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Washington University in St. Louis will present on “the Earliest Pottery in the World.” \nWhy was pottery invented? While for decades we assumed a connection between plant domestication\, pottery use\, and social hierarchy today we know that the earliest pottery in the world was found in cave sites in South China connected to a hunter and gatherer lifeway at ~20 -19 kya. This is the first example of a wider Eastern Asian hunter gatherer pottery making tradition. In this talk we will discuss the sites of the earliest pottery and explore cooking practices and social structure of the groups that first used pottery. \nJoin via Zoom by this link on November 6th\, 2022 at 11:30 AM EST.  \nMeeting ID: 881 5810 9696\nPasscode: 698547
