SUMMARY:The Tobacco Takers: Puritans\, Pipes\, and Bodily Care
DESCRIPTION:Indigenous to the Americas and cultivated by Native peoples for thousands of years\, tobacco was introduced to Europeans in the 16th century\, and by the early 17th century\, it had spread across the globe. In Puritan New England\, religious leaders condemned tobacco as sinful while early practitioners used it as medicine. Clay tobacco pipes commonly found at 17th-century archaeological sites in Massachusetts reveal widespread use despite strict social and religious restrictions. Drawing from her new book\, The Tobacco Takers: Puritanism\, Smoking\, Health\, and the Archaeology of Bodily Care (Bloomsbury Publishing\, 2026)\, Diana DiPaolo Loren\, deputy director for curatorial affairs and senior curator at Harvard’s Peabody Museum\, will share archaeological\, archival\, and visual evidence that recasts tobacco and tobacco pipes as tools of bodily care for both physical and metaphysical ailments. The program will include a conversation with archaeologist Stephen W. Silliman. \nCopies of The Tobacco Takers will be available for purchase after the program. Advance registration is recommended. \nFree event parking is available with registration at the 52 Oxford Street Garage\, starting at 5:00 pm. Register by October 12th\, 2026 to receive parking registration instructions. \nPresented by the Peabody Museum of Archaeology & Ethnology and the Harvard Museums of Science & Culture.

SUMMARY:The Materiality of Blue:
DESCRIPTION:Natural blue pigments in the ancient world are uncommon\, usually sourced from far away and difficult to process. Reviewing these shady characters\, like lazurite and azurite\, will shed light on ancient artisanal capabilities\, technical knowledge\, and even trade connections that reveal the extent to which ancient people would travel and experiment in order to find blue. The development in the late 4th millennium B.C. of a synthetic blue pigment\, Egyptian blue\, made it possible not only to paint in blue but even to use this material in ways beyond its primary state as a pigment. Experimental archaeology paired with ancient texts and archaeology\, making it possible to understand the stages by which these materials were made makes it possible to understand with heightened appreciation the technical innovation of antiquity.

SUMMARY:2026 Oklahoma Archaeology Month Lecture with Dr. Severin Fowles
DESCRIPTION:THE SOUTHERN ATHABASKANS: SEVEN CENTURIES OF INNOVATION FROM OKLAHOMA TO ARIZONA\nWhat archaeologists refer to as the Southern Athapaskan cultural tradition spread across the American Southwest during the second millennium CE as a dispersed network of social formations in creative dialogue\, first\, with the rise of large Ancestral Pueblo centers and\, later\, with the arrival of Spanish and American colonists. The tradition is often defined in linguistic terms\, though both the timing and significance of the arrival of the Athapaskan language in the region is debated. Others foreground the tradition’s structural position with a wider Southwest political economy-as one half of a strategic\, mutualistic\, and at times competitive relationship between aggregated farming villages and the more mobile groups of hunters that encircled them. In this presentation\, he argues that image production-particularly in the well-preserved medium of rock art-is emerging as a key line of evidence\, poised to significantly refine our understanding of the Southern Athapaskan tradition as a fast-changing regional phenomenon. His argument centers rock art evidence from the Rio Grande Valley but aims to also characterize wider patterns across the Pueblo region and Southern Plains.

SUMMARY:Isotope Analysis in Bioarchaeology: An Introduction
DESCRIPTION:This 2-hour webinar provides a broad introduction to how archaeologists use isotope analysis of biological materials to understand the past. \nAimed at researchers\, heritage management professionals\, and students who are curious about isotope analysis but have no previous experience with it\, the webinar starts with the question “what is an isotope?” and guides participants through the theory and practice of the four most common types of isotope analysis applied in bioarchaeological research: carbon\, nitrogen\, strontium\, and oxygen. \nAfter completing the webinar\, participants will understand how bioarchaeological isotope analysis works\, how the results of isotope analysis are presented and interpreted\, and how isotope analysis can add value to both academic and commercial projects. After completing the webinar\, a Continuing Professional Development certificate can be provided to participants upon request.

SUMMARY:Beyond Shipwrecks: Engaging the Past Across the Generations
DESCRIPTION:Across the world’s oceans\, UNESCO estimates that more than three million shipwrecks rest on\nthe seafloor. Yet this represents only a fraction of our underwater cultural heritage (UCH).\nLakes\, rivers\, estuaries\, and inland waterways hold their own archives of human movement and\ninnovation. Beyond shipwrecks lie submerged airplanes\, landscapes\, settlements\, and industrial\nsites—a vast\, largely unseen record of culture and the pathways people have traveled for\ngenerations. These places offer powerful gateways for engaging people of all ages because they\nnaturally connect the humanities and the sciences. They embody the most advanced science\,\nengineering\, technology\, and problem solving of the past\, while advancing innovative STEM\napplications today. Whether someone is writing coding workflows that help process and interpret\ndata\, piloting underwater robotics\, identifying objects in underwater photos\, building a virtual\ndive in a game engine\, or printing a scaled model of a wreck\, these hands on experiences invite\npeople to interact directly with science and history and feel the spark of discovery. Yet it is the\nshared human experience embedded in these sites— indelible histories of travel\, adaptation\,\ningenuity\, and loss—that connects the past with the present and inspires the future. Drawing on\nmore than 30 years in education and maritime archaeology\, Dr. Calvin Mires explores how\nmoving beyond shipwrecks expands the possibilities for public engagement. By reframing\nunderwater heritage as a living\, interdisciplinary resource\, we can spark curiosity across many\npursuits of knowledge and connect communities to the waterways around them.

SUMMARY:Two Lands\, Two Worlds\, One Human | International Archaeology Day
DESCRIPTION:TWO LANDS\, TWO WORLDS\, ONE HUMAN | IAD 2026 \nSATURDAY | 17 OCTOBER 2026 | 9:00–16:00 | FREE ENTRY \nArcheopark Pavlov invites you to International Archaeology Day on Saturday\, 17 October. This year’s programme will connect two seemingly distant worlds: Palaeolithic southern Moravia and Tierra del Fuego at the very southern tip of South America. The full-day programme will include guided tours\, a lecture\, an exhibition and a themed game\, all available free of charge throughout the day. \nGuided tours of the permanent exhibition will take place at 10:00\, 12:00 and 14:00\, introducing visitors to the world of the mammoth hunters who lived beneath the Pálava Hills 30\,000 years ago. \nAn important part of the programme will also be the accompanying exhibition Tierra del Fuego\, which has been on display at Archeopark Pavlov since May this year. \nThe exhibition explores the lives of the Indigenous peoples of Tierra del Fuego\, one of the most remote and harshest regions on our planet. Drawing on archaeological\, ethnological and ethnoarchaeological knowledge\, it presents their everyday lives\, subsistence strategies\, rituals and mythology. It also highlights the remarkable ability of humans to adapt to extreme conditions and reflects on how easily our first impressions of another culture can distort our ideas of what “civilisation” means. \nAt 13:00\, the programme will continue with a lecture by Jiří Svoboda\, the exhibition’s author\, who will take visitors deeper into the world of Tierra del Fuego and the themes explored in the exhibition. \nThroughout the day\, visitors will also be able to take part in a themed game directly in the exhibition\, exploring the stories of Tierra del Fuego\, and in particular the stories of travellers and researchers who set out to discover and study this distant world. The game is aimed primarily at older children and adults and offers another way to explore the subject. \nThis year\, International Archaeology Day at Archeopark Pavlov will connect two distant parts of the world and two different periods of human history. Although they are separated by thousands of kilometres and tens of thousands of years\, both bring us face to face with the human being\, their ability to adapt to their environment\, create their own culture and find ways to live and survive in the world around them. \nProgramme subject to change. The programme is conducted in Czech only.

Come connect with local history\, try something completely new\, and help us celebrate the cultural treasures of our community. \nThe day begins with fresh pastries and coffee paired with a lecture introducing the world of archaeology and the hidden history buried right here in Passaic County. From there\, visitors can step behind the scenes for a guided lab and gallery tour to see exactly where real historical discoveries are analyzed and how. The excitement continues outdoors with a live flintknapping demonstration where you can watch sparks fly as stone tools are crafted by hand. Attendees can also master the compass in an interactive grid-mapping challenge\, learning exactly how to survey a site just like professional archaeologists. A realistic mock excavation sandbox offers an authentic\, hands-on dig experience\, though space is strictly limited to ten eager participants. Finally\, history enthusiasts of all ages can test their skills at an artifact mending station\, sorting and piecing together broken pottery fragments to learn how experts identify and catalog artifacts. We cannot wait to see you there!
