SUMMARY:Terrace Utah\, Population 0
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our online webinar event! \nUtah’s desert sands have buried incredible stories – now it’s time to uncover what has been lost. \nHustling and bustling to starkly quiet\, the life of one of Utah’s largest railroad towns of the 1870s-1890s remains part of the historical and archaeological record. \nArchaeologists with the Utah State Historic Preservation Office and the Bureau of Land Management partnered with the Chinese Railroad Workers’ Descendants Association to complete two seasons of fieldwork at the town of Terrace\, home to Utah’s third largest Chinatown in 1870. Though ravaged by time and vandals\, the archaeological heritage of this site is rich and helping connect living peoples to this past experience. In honor of International Archaeology Day\, this presentation will honor of the voices of those past residents of Terrace through the Chinese descendant community\, archaeological discoveries\, and work of numerous volunteers. \nYou can register for this event by clicking the button below.

SUMMARY:Laboratoire d’archéologie publique / Public Archaeology Lab
DESCRIPTION:We like to think of archaeologists as diggers who\, trowel in hand\, extract remains from the ground and describe their context. However\, while excavation is the most visible and iconic activity in archeology\, it is only part of their task. It is in the laboratory that they spend the most time processing their findings\, analyzing their data and proposing interpretations that will contribute to our knowledge. As it takes place out of the public eye\, this stage of the archaeological process is also the least understood.\nTo make this work more visible\, the Laboratoire d’archéologie et de patrimoine (Archeology and Heritage Laboratory) of the University of Quebec at Rimouski is moving into the Rimouski Regional Museum. From October 1 to 17\, 2021\, visitors are invited to interact with the archaeologists in residence as they continue their research on local and regional archaeological material.

SUMMARY:The Collecting of Classical Antiquities by the Nazi Elite
DESCRIPTION:Much has been written about Adolf Hitler’s interest in classical antiquity and its appropriation under National Socialism\, but the question that has not been asked is: do the rhetoric/propaganda and supposed classical aesthetic match the practice among the Nazis of collecting classical antiquities? In this presentation\, Dr. Romano will explore what we know about the ancient collections of Hitler and Herrmann Göring\, as well as those acquired for the so-called “Führermuseum” envisioned in Linz\, Austria\, and will attempt to explain the discrepancies between National Socialist ideology and the reality of the collecting of classical antiquities in the Nazi era.

SUMMARY:Sacred Landscapes in Ancient Arcadia
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Mary E. Voyatzis\nProfessor Emerita of Anthropology and Classics at the University of Arizona \nThe mountainous region of Arcadia\, situated in the heart of the Peloponnese\, has attracted considerable attention since antiquity. Many ancient authors described the region in detail\, describing its rich mythology\, unusual gods\, numerous sanctuaries\, engaging history\, diverse geography\, and the fact that its inhabitants were indigenous\, living there even before the moon\, and the original inhabitants of Greece. During the Renaissance\, Arcadia was depicted in art as a beautiful\, pristine\, and magical place with unspoiled wilderness. By the 19th c. European travelers were exploring the region\, and later in the century archaeologists began excavating its various sites. Today we shall look at some recently excavated sites in Arcadia\, focusing on two where the speaker has been involved\, the Sanctuary of Athena Alea at Tegea\, and the Sanctuary of Zeus on Mt. Lykaion. We shall see how archaeological discoveries have contributed significantly to our understanding of the history of Arcadia and enhanced our appreciation of this enchanting mountainous region.

SUMMARY:Sensing the Past: A workshop in applied sensory archaeology and heritage assessment
DESCRIPTION:Last chance to register! \nSensing the past: A workshop in applied sensory archaeology and heritage assessment \nOctober 7-9\, 2021: Online and in Amsterdam\, NL \nJoin us for this international workshop bringing together a wide range of sense-based research methodologies applied to the ancient and historic built environment. \nAn increasing number of interdisciplinary approaches to sensory research in humanities has proven productive in decentralizing ocular-centric models of experience towards holistic comprehension of built remains. These innovative perspectives have led to a growing field of inquiry and dispersed collection of investigatory methods to approach senses individually or through their interrelationships (e.g. synesthesia). In so doing\, more avenues are widening for identifying undervalued forms of historic communication\, quotidian forms of place-making\, and carriers of meaning in ancient and historical places that are not visibly accessible in the physical remains. \nPart 1\, held online on 7 and 8 October\, will introduce participants to the state-of-the-field debates in experiential archaeology and heritage work. A series of 18 presentations will be anchored by a keynote address by Dr. Sue Hamilton (Director\, UCL Institute of Archaeology) on 8 October. Presentations will take place between 10am and 6pm CEST. \nPart 2 of the workshop\, held in person on 9 October\, will give a limited number of local participants experiential fieldwork practice by taking part in a sensory walk at the Fort bij Uithoorn\, a site built as part of the Amsterdam defense line system and inscribed in the Stelling van Amsterdam UNESCO world heritage designation. Research will be contextualized with a lecture by a local military history expert. \nMany of the forts in the Stelling have come under recent revitalization efforts\, which preserve the material composition of the fort but often significantly change the experiential layer. Fieldwork will equip participants to analyze historic sensory contributions to such historic spaces and to contribute to redevelopment dialogues beyond mere material evidence. Safety measures in place due to Covid-19 will be applied. \nAdvance registration by October 5th is required for this workshop and site visit. For more information on speakers\, discussion themes\, and registration\, please visit: www.uva.nl/sensingthepast \nThis workshop is a collaboration between the Universiteit van Amsterdam School of Heritage\, Memory\, and Material Culture and the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam Institute CLUE+.
