SUMMARY:The Angkorian World: Polity and Cosmos in Southeast Asia
DESCRIPTION:Lecturer: Miriam Stark (University of Hawai’i at Manoa) \nAngkor’s first great king\, Jayavarman II\, established Cambodia’ Angkorian state on the banks of the Tonle Sap in 802 CE and built his first capital\, Mahendraparvata\, on the slope of the nearby Kulen mountains. What followed were six centuries of political competition\, warfare\, and imperial rule by Angkor’s kings. Like rulers of other ancient states\, Khmer kings built vast stone monuments to honor their predecessors and gods that still stand today. A century of scholarly research on the Khmer empire’s achievements has shed light on the scale and nature of premodern Southeast Asia’s most influential polity; it has also shaped political agenda in unanticipated ways. This lecture introduces the Angkorian world\, from its temples to its ceramics\, and examines how cosmology and statecraft created Southeast Asia’s greatest premodern empire and the world’s largest preindustrial city. \nThis event will be hosted remotely via Zoom. SUMMARY:Unearthing A Slave Community
DESCRIPTION:Over the next several years\, we will be examining a number of different archaeological sites. What makes Montpelier a wonderful property for surveys and excavations is its relative undisturbed condition. All of the sites we excavate have never been plowed–and most were abandoned in the 1840s\, leaving the archaeological features in pristine condition. \nThis season we will be excavating the Blacksmith Shop complex at the Madison plantation. All of our current projects are part of a larger effort to interpret and reconstruct the lives of the enslaved community so it can be accessed by visitors. \nThe LEARN Archaeology Expedition program has been operating at Montpelier for a decade-and-a-half\, with many of the same volunteers returning year after year. We are\, however\, keen to add new faces to the program. All of the scheduled programs are designed to give participants actual excavation experience on an archaeological site working side-by-side with trained professional archaeologists. We have a staff of six archaeologists who work with participants both in the lab and in the field\, which means you have personal interaction with archaeological staff and this allows you to work on sensitive features\, artifacts\, and deposits that normally one would not get to handle. You are treated as a member of the research team and we step you through the entire excavation process. While you are here at Montpelier\, you will be engaged in lectures\, and take tours of various archaeological sites on the property. \nYou can learn about all of our LEARN Archaeology Expeditions at the following link. \nWe also host a month-long university archaeology field school. For more information on this\, please see our field school web page. \nFor more information contact Melissa Kerrat dig@montpelier.org

SUMMARY:Visions of Ancient Egypt in Athenaeus’ Deipnosophistae
DESCRIPTION:The American Research Center in Egypt\, Northern California Chapter\, and the Near Eastern Studies Department\, University of California\, Berkeley\, invite you to attend a virtual lecture by Dr. Carly Maris\, University of San Diego:\n“Visions of Ancient Egypt in Athenaeus’ Deipnosophistae” \nSunday\, March 13\, 2022\, 3 PM Pacific Time \nZoom Lecture. A registration link will be automatically sent to ARCE-NC members. Non-members may request a registration link by sending email with your name and email address to arcencZoom@gmail.com. Non-members\, please send any registration requests no later than Friday\, March 11. Registrations are cut off at our attendance limit\, so the sooner you register\, the better. \nGlenn Meyer\nARCE-NC ePublicity \nAbout the Lecture:\nThe Deipnosophistae is a late second- to early third-century CE dialogue written by grammarian Athenaeus of Naucratis. The text follows the style and themes of Plato’s Symposium\, presenting an imaginary conversation between philosophers that takes place during a Roman banquet. Scholars have found value in the Deipnosophistae for its inclusion of lengthy quotations from earlier Greek texts that have otherwise been lost. It provides key insight as to the historical resources and documents available to the educated classes during the height of the Roman Empire. Included in the Deipnosophistae are multiple historical accounts of Egypt–including descriptions of its geography and climate\, the history of Egyptian wine\, and stories about various rulers (including a description of a massive parade during the reign of Ptolemy Philadelphus). My talk will focus on how Athenaeus viewed the ancient Egyptian past\, and will place this in context with broader visions of Ancient Egypt during the Roman Empire. \nAbout the Speaker:\nDr. Carly Maris is a Visiting Assistant Professor in the History Department at the University of San Diego. Her research looks broadly at Western perceptions of the East\, and explores how Near Eastern culture influenced the Roman empire. She is currently working on a book titled Parades of Antiquity\, in which she explores the history of imperial parades in the Near East\, and how they impacted the spectacle of Roman triumphal parades up through the early Byzantine period.
