SUMMARY:Texas Talks Speaker Series: Dr. Reid Ferring - A Look at the Aubrey Clovis Site
DESCRIPTION:Join the Denton County Office of History and Culture for the Texas Talks Speaker Series! \nOn Wednesday\, October 4 at 6 PM\, archaeologist Dr. Reid Ferring will present “Discovering the First People of Denton County” in the Commissioners Courtroom at the Denton County Courthouse-on-the-Square Museum. This presentation is sponsored by the Denton County Historical Commission in celebration of Texas Archaeology Month. \nOn Dec. 2\, 1988\, Dr. Ferring and his eight year old son\, Taylor\, were on a mission to collect fossils for Taylor’s 3rd grade class near their home in Aubrey\, Texas. What they discovered that day turned out to be one of the oldest campgrounds in North America—well over 11\,000 years old. \nArchaeological excavations of this site in Aubrey by Dr. Ferring revealed an exceptionally preserved record of Late Pleistocene environments and the activities of Clovis people along the Trinity River. Over 9\,000 stone artifacts and 25\,000 bones of animals provide evidence of Clovis food procurement and processing. At 13\,500 years ago\, these are the earliest records of Clovis in Texas. \nAbout the speaker: \nDr. Reid Ferring is a Professor Emeritus at the University of North Texas\, as well as an archaeologist and geologist\, focusing on Eurasia and the North American Great Plains. He maintains research interests in Clovis Paleoindian occupations of the Southern Plains and lithic technology. Dr. Ferring teaches a variety of courses including Physical Geology\, Soils Geomorphology\, Geology of Texas\, Origins of Civilization\, and regional archaeological surveys of the Old World and New World. He advises graduate students and supervises their research in their chosen areas as well as his research projects.

SUMMARY:The Settlement Ecology of Emerging Commercial Dairy Farming in 19th-century Upstate New York
DESCRIPTION:This lecture by Dr. Eric Jones (CU Boulder) discusses the development of commercial farming in the mid-19th century was a critical component of industrialization in the United States. It examines when\, how\, and why farmers in the Town of Fenner\, New York began this transition and helped to create one of the most productive dairy industries in the country. The result was a focus on diversified farming and community economic well-being over individual financial independence.

SUMMARY:Shadows of Time: The Science and Art of the Ancient Sundial
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Nick Winters presents the AIA Chicago Society Annual Webster Lecture \nMechanically simple and mathematically sophisticated\, the sundial was a triumph of ancient astronomy and technology. In this lecture and workshop\, we will explore the diverse forms and functions of ancient sundials\, as well as their social uses and political meanings. From rudimentary wall-dials to complex and highly precise instruments\, and from the portable devices of soldiers to the great monuments of emperors\, these artefacts illuminate much more than ancient methods of reckoning time: they are works of art\, signs of power\, and a record of one of humanity’s earliest searches for order in the universe. Each attendee will receive their own simple sundial making kit. \nAdmission is free of charge and open to all. \nLewis Center\, Room 1003\n25 E Jackson Blvd\nChicago\, IL 60604

SUMMARY:The Living Dead in Ancient Egypt
DESCRIPTION:“Oh Unas\, you have not gone away dead\, but alive.” The Pyramid Text quoted here tells us that the ancient Egyptians believed in the continued influence of the dead in the lives of the living. The dead in ancient Egypt were supernatural intermediaries\, folk heroes\, and some were even deified\, worshiped as gods in the Egyptian pantheon. This talk will build on the research found in Dr. Troche’s first book\, Death\, Power\, and Apotheosis in Ancient Egypt (Cornell University Press\, 2021) and invite audiences to learn about the spectrum of deceased actors in ancient Egypt. In particular\, she will delve into the process by which some of these dead were deified and the ramifications of this deification\, such as challenging royal authority during the Pyramid Age. \nFree and open to the public. Free event parking at the 52 Oxford Street Garage. Presented by the Harvard Museum of the Ancient Near East and the Harvard Museums of Science & Culture \nImage: Graffito scene invoking Imhotep at Ptah Temple Karnak. Credit: CFEETK.

SUMMARY:The splendor and misery of the inhabitants of Písek in Bohemia in the early modern era
DESCRIPTION:Lecture in Prachenske Museum in Písek\, Bohemia.\nRoyal town of Písek was founded in 13th century AD on the commercial crossroads. Archaeological findings from the last decades also shed new light on the lifestyle of the inhabitants of the town of Písek in the 16th and the first half of the 17th centuries. The Renaissance\, and especially the Rudolfinian period\, is a sign of conjuncture in all areas of human activity in the Czech lands. On the one hand\, there are written sources showing the wealth of the inhabitants of that time\, and on the other\, there are finds of various imports of precious commodities (like imported majolica from Italy and Catalania\, as well the example of porcelaine of Ming dynasty). The vanity of this period is\, however\, linked to the sharp indebtedness of the municipality of Písek. This is joined by confessional jealousy between Catholics and Protestants\, leading to the Thirty Years’ War and the decline of the town as a whole\, when its status temporarily changes from a royal city to a vassal city.

SUMMARY:Arkhaios Cultural Heritage and Archaeology Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:The Arkhaios Cultural Heritage and Archaeology Film Festival is an annual juried competition\, part of the Archaeology Month Celebrations taking place in the United States. It is also an educational event\, showcasing the discovery of past cultures gained from ethnological or archaeological research\, illustrated by documentary films. These films are of great artistic and scientific quality but may be unknown because of limited access to traditional distribution channels. It also encourages the interest of local filmmakers to apply their art to State history. This in-person festival is free and open to the public\, no tickets or pre-registration is required. Festival films are also available virtually for free on the Arkhaios website the second week of October.
