DESCRIPTION:TWO LANDS\, TWO WORLDS\, ONE HUMAN | IAD 2026 \nSATURDAY | 17 OCTOBER 2026 | 9:00–16:00 | FREE ENTRY \nArcheopark Pavlov invites you to International Archaeology Day on Saturday\, 17 October. This year’s programme will connect two seemingly distant worlds: Palaeolithic southern Moravia and Tierra del Fuego at the very southern tip of South America. The full-day programme will include guided tours\, a lecture\, an exhibition and a themed game\, all available free of charge throughout the day. \nGuided tours of the permanent exhibition will take place at 10:00\, 12:00 and 14:00\, introducing visitors to the world of the mammoth hunters who lived beneath the Pálava Hills 30\,000 years ago. \nAn important part of the programme will also be the accompanying exhibition Tierra del Fuego\, which has been on display at Archeopark Pavlov since May this year. \nThe exhibition explores the lives of the Indigenous peoples of Tierra del Fuego\, one of the most remote and harshest regions on our planet. Drawing on archaeological\, ethnological and ethnoarchaeological knowledge\, it presents their everyday lives\, subsistence strategies\, rituals and mythology. It also highlights the remarkable ability of humans to adapt to extreme conditions and reflects on how easily our first impressions of another culture can distort our ideas of what “civilisation” means. \nAt 13:00\, the programme will continue with a lecture by Jiří Svoboda\, the exhibition’s author\, who will take visitors deeper into the world of Tierra del Fuego and the themes explored in the exhibition. \nThroughout the day\, visitors will also be able to take part in a themed game directly in the exhibition\, exploring the stories of Tierra del Fuego\, and in particular the stories of travellers and researchers who set out to discover and study this distant world. The game is aimed primarily at older children and adults and offers another way to explore the subject. \nThis year\, International Archaeology Day at Archeopark Pavlov will connect two distant parts of the world and two different periods of human history. Although they are separated by thousands of kilometres and tens of thousands of years\, both bring us face to face with the human being\, their ability to adapt to their environment\, create their own culture and find ways to live and survive in the world around them. \nProgramme subject to change. Whether you are a lifelong history buff looking to sharpen your skills\, seeking a unique weekend outing\, or a family ready for an interactive adventure\, there is something incredible waiting for everyone. Come connect with local history\, try something completely new\, and help us celebrate the cultural treasures of our community. \nThe day begins with fresh pastries and coffee paired with a lecture introducing the world of archaeology and the hidden history buried right here in Passaic County. From there\, visitors can step behind the scenes for a guided lab and gallery tour to see exactly where real historical discoveries are analyzed and how. The excitement continues outdoors with a live flintknapping demonstration where you can watch sparks fly as stone tools are crafted by hand. Attendees can also master the compass in an interactive grid-mapping challenge\, learning exactly how to survey a site just like professional archaeologists. A realistic mock excavation sandbox offers an authentic\, hands-on dig experience\, though space is strictly limited to ten eager participants. Finally\, history enthusiasts of all ages can test their skills at an artifact mending station\, sorting and piecing together broken pottery fragments to learn how experts identify and catalog artifacts. DESCRIPTION:Join Dr. Jessica Dello Russo for an engaging exploration of the Jewish catacombs of ancient Rome and the discoveries that are transforming our understanding of Jewish life and burial practices in antiquity. A specialist in Roman topography\, funerary archaeology\, and the history of archaeology\, Dr. Dello Russo has developed and curated major scholarly initiatives\, including the DAPICS image archive\, the BiblioSelect research indices\, the Luminaria blog\, and the ongoing digitization of the archives of ICS founder Estelle Shohet Brettman. \nDr. Dello Russo’s archaeological and archival research has yielded significant discoveries\, including pieces of the renowned “Sarcophagus of the Menorah” from the Jewish Catacombs of Vigna Randanini\, the rediscovery of the long-inaccessible Jewish catacomb of Vigna Cimarra\, and previously unpublished documentation from the earliest excavations of Rome’s Jewish catacombs. These findings have shed new light on the history and preservation of these extraordinary underground cemeteries. Drawing on her doctoral research\, Dr. Dello Russo will discuss the history\, archaeology\, and enduring significance of Rome’s Jewish catacombs\, offering fresh insights into one of the oldest Jewish communities in the Diaspora and the remarkable subterranean monuments that preserve its legacy.

DESCRIPTION:The activities in this event will consist of the following: \n1. Archaeological Outreach at the Zoo\nThe Fresno Chaffee Zoo will host a major celebration for Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) on Sunday\, November 1st\, and has invited the Society to participate. Recognizing the high attendance anticipated for this event\, the Society will host an educational table staffed by our board members. This presence will allow us to engage with the public\, promote the importance of archaeology and anthropological studies\, distribute educational materials\, and recruit new members. Archaeology aligns perfectly with the thematic essence of Día de los Muertos; it serves as a profound reminder that death is not a final erasure\, but rather an entry point for studying the vibrant cultures\, civilizations\, and enduring lessons left behind by past generations. \n2. Guided Tour of the Kingdoms of Asia Exhibit\nThe Society will host an in-person\, guided tour of the Fresno Chaffee Zoo’s newly opened Kingdoms of Asia exhibit. This immersive installation features monumental replicas of ancient Khmer architectural marvels and sacred sites\, including the Bayon Temple\, Ta Prohm Temple\, and Kbal Sapean. The original 13th-century Cambodian temples are globally renowned\, highly studied by archaeologists and art historians\, and have served as iconic filming locations for several Western movies. This specialized tour will delve deeply into the historical significance of these structures\, decoding their rich symbolic elements and explaining their roles in ancient Southeast Asian cultures.

DESCRIPTION:Please join us for an in-person screening and informal discussion of the Archaeology Hour talk by Briana Pobiner (Smithsonian). \nThe modern “paleo” diet movement makes many assumptions about what our ancient humans ate. But are these assumptions accurate\, based on what we know about past diets? Presenting a variety of lines of evidence for prehistoric human diets including early human\, animal\, and plant fossils\, ancient stone tools\, DNA\, and living human and chimpanzee diets\, Dr. Pobiner will discuss significant changes in the evolution of human diets – and highlight what makes human meat-eating unique. \nThis event is free and open to the public.
