SUMMARY:Arch in the Park
DESCRIPTION:The San Diego County Archaeological Society (SDCAS)’s celebration of California Archaeology Month and International Archaeology Day is held on the 3rd Saturday in October as part of our annual Arch in the Park event. Our goal is to educate the public about archaeology\, and to provide information on various career and volunteer opportunities with local archaeological companies\, museums\, universities\, and organizations. Typically\, more than 30 vendors take part in Arch in the Park. Arch in the Park is ideal for students and budding archaeologists to network\, as well as family fun. Find out about archaeology\, see archaeology exhibits\, and talk to real archaeologists. Food\, books\, raffle tickets\, and SDCAS merchandise will be available for purchase. \nWe respectfully request that everyone follow current CDC guidelines for masking in order to maintain a safe and healthy environment. \nHere are some of our exciting activities:\nInformation about Archaeology . See traditional craft demonstrations . Hear Running Grunion’s stories . Raffles and book sale . Activities for kids . Artifacts and replicas . Volunteer opportunities (CASSP) . Career opportunities (networking) . Native American basketry . Zooarchaeology exhibit . Fry bread for sale . Fire prevention . How to illustrate artifacts . Photos and exhibits of animal bones

SUMMARY:Through the ages around the world with clothes on the back
DESCRIPTION:There’s no International Day of Archeology last year because of lockdown. This year we’re going to repeat that event within the walls of our museum. The subject is as close as a shirt to the body\, because the title is “Through the ages around the world with clothes on the back”. During the lecture you will find out\, among others how did it even happen that our very distant ancestors began to wear clothes\, what was the difference between a chiton and a toga\, and what did the brooches look like and what were. The “Medieval Chic” shows are an opportunity to meet face to face with the knight and his lady\, as well as with early medieval warriors and whiteheads. For children\, we offer workshops on the production of ornaments – bracelets\, pendants as well as frames and pouches. We will host a historical reconstruction group – late medieval Chorągiew Ziemi Górnośląskiej from Toszek Castle and early medieval Golęszycka Drużyna Dąb.

SUMMARY:Ancient Egyptian History: Why Bother?
DESCRIPTION:For those of us who are fascinated by the ancient history of Egypt it seems normal that the subject is taught in universities worldwide\, but this may not be true for today’s students (and their parents paying the tuition bills). Does the subject have a relevance beyond mere knowledge of what happened in the past? As a long-time teacher of ancient Egyptian history to large audiences at Columbia University and author of a textbook on the subject\, Professor Marc Van De Mieroop\, Columbia University\, will reflect on this question.

SUMMARY:The Dirt Podcast LIVE! - Let's Call It a Ritual Object
DESCRIPTION:We all know the old joke: archaeologists find something\, can’t figure out its purpose\, and decide it must have a “ritual function.” But what’s the real story when it comes to exploring ritual in the archaeological record? In this special live recording of The Dirt\, Anna and Amber tackle that very question by exploring the theory that informs ritual\, before doing a roundup of sites and studies that give us a glimpse into a different side of people’s lives in other times and places. \nAfter the show\, the hosts will hang around for a Q&A about the episode’s topic\, science communication\, podcasting\, and ways to get involved in archaeology no matter your age or background. SUMMARY:Methods of laboratory processing and documentation of findings in archaeological depositories
DESCRIPTION:The workshop is organized by Palacký University Olomouc in cooperation with the Archaeological Institute of the Academy of Sciences in Brno and the Regional Museum in Mikulov as part of the World Day of Archeology. The workshop will use the findings from the Pavlov-Horní pole site and the general public will be practically acquainted with the individual conservation and documentation procedures of archaeological material processing (cleaning and completion of artifacts\, gluing and plastering of ceramic vessels\, drawing\, photo documentation\, etc.).

SUMMARY:Syracuse\, Empire in a City: An Archaeology of Magna Graecia’s Unwilling Immigrants
DESCRIPTION:Classical Syracuse was a city of immigrants. Some came seeking work and high wages\, others as refugees fleeing the Carthaginians’ advance across Sicily. But most arrived by force after being defeated by the Syracusans and dispossessed of their land. Since the late Archaic period\, the Syracusans regularly forced the people they conquered to relocate to Syracusan territory as citizens and then gave away the land they left behind to people from outside of Syracusan society. In this talk\, we will explore how the Syracusans competed with their rivals in the Classical period by forcing the people they conquered to become unwilling immigrants at Syracuse\, a tumultuous history that saw the Syracusans rapidly uproot much of Magna Graecia. We will examine excavation assemblages from the ancient sites of Naxos\, Leontinoi\, and Syracuse to see what was so distinctive about Syracusan imperialism in the ancient world and what set them apart from their imperial contemporaries at Athens and Rome. Through it all\, we will see how the Syracusans were on their way to constructing one of the Mediterranean’s first quasi-planned economies—an empire in a city.

SUMMARY:Family\, food and health in the Bronze Age Aegean: Novel bioarchaeological insights into Mycenaean and Minoan societies
DESCRIPTION:Since the famous excavations of Heinrich Schliemann in Mycenae and of Arthur Evans in Knossos\, we have been trying to understand the life of the Mycenaean and Minoan societies of the second millennium BCE. Outstanding palaces\, literary sources and rich burials have inspired our fascination of the Aegean Bronze Age. However\, many basic questions have remained unanswered: How were families structured? What about individual mobility in the Aegean? Did people move from Anatolia to the Aegean or from Mainland Greek to Crete? What about their food and health? Now\, a plethora of bioarchaeological approaches from archaeogenetics to the study of food residues in human dental calculus opens up new horizons of knowledge. Within my European Research Council project “FoodTransforms” and at the Max Planck Harvard Research Center for the Archaeoscience of the Ancient Mediterranean\, we have now assembled a bioarchaeological dataset of the Aegean Bronze Age\, which enables novel insights into Bronze Age marital rules\, biological relationships in collective burials\, human mobility\, culinary practices\, resource management and infectious diseases in the 3rd and 2nd millennium BC Aegean. I will present these datasets and integrate them into our rich archaeological evidence in order to shed a new light on Mycenaean and Minoan societies.
