SUMMARY:The Living Dead in Ancient Egypt
DESCRIPTION:“Oh Unas\, you have not gone away dead\, but alive.” The Pyramid Text quoted here tells us that the ancient Egyptians believed in the continued influence of the dead in the lives of the living. The dead in ancient Egypt were supernatural intermediaries\, folk heroes\, and some were even deified\, worshiped as gods in the Egyptian pantheon. This talk will build on the research found in Dr. Troche’s first book\, Death\, Power\, and Apotheosis in Ancient Egypt (Cornell University Press\, 2021) and invite audiences to learn about the spectrum of deceased actors in ancient Egypt. In particular\, she will delve into the process by which some of these dead were deified and the ramifications of this deification\, such as challenging royal authority during the Pyramid Age. \nFree and open to the public. Free event parking at the 52 Oxford Street Garage. Presented by the Harvard Museum of the Ancient Near East and the Harvard Museums of Science & Culture \nImage: Graffito scene invoking Imhotep at Ptah Temple Karnak. Credit: CFEETK.

SUMMARY:The splendor and misery of the inhabitants of Písek in Bohemia in the early modern era
DESCRIPTION:Lecture in Prachenske Museum in Písek\, Bohemia.\nRoyal town of Písek was founded in 13th century AD on the commercial crossroads. Archaeological findings from the last decades also shed new light on the lifestyle of the inhabitants of the town of Písek in the 16th and the first half of the 17th centuries. The Renaissance\, and especially the Rudolfinian period\, is a sign of conjuncture in all areas of human activity in the Czech lands. On the one hand\, there are written sources showing the wealth of the inhabitants of that time\, and on the other\, there are finds of various imports of precious commodities (like imported majolica from Italy and Catalania\, as well the example of porcelaine of Ming dynasty). The vanity of this period is\, however\, linked to the sharp indebtedness of the municipality of Písek. This is joined by confessional jealousy between Catholics and Protestants\, leading to the Thirty Years’ War and the decline of the town as a whole\, when its status temporarily changes from a royal city to a vassal city.

SUMMARY:The Enduring Lifestyle of the Ancestral Maya
DESCRIPTION:Borowski lecture \nAncient tropical societies dealt with the same issues we face today—climate instability\, growing populations\, overuse of resources\, and so on. One of the major issues at present is growing concern about providing adequate supplies of clean drinking water. We can learn from past tropical societies\, including the ancestral Maya of Central America\, whose cities supplied clean water via sophisticated\, self-cleaning reservoirs (i.e.\, constructed wetlands) for over 1\,000 years. Their long-term success demonstrates the enduring usefulness of self-cleaning reservoirs or constructed wetlands\, as I illustrate with the Classic Maya (c. 250-900 CE). I conclude with discussing the vital importance of preserving cultural heritage for descendants\, tourism—and to benefit our future through the lessons the past embodies

SUMMARY:8th Annual Archaeologists for Autism
DESCRIPTION:The Archaeologists for Autism mission is to unlock the potential of children and young adults with autism and autism related disorders. We aim to provide a chance to experience archaeology in a fun\, low stress environment and on their terms. \nWe are a non-profit 501(c) (3) association consisting of all volunteers and no one receives a salary or other compensation. We depend entirely on donations from the public and all funds go directly to running AFA.\nWe have partnered with various autism agencies and organizations as well as the archaeology and paleontology communities to run these events each year. \nHas the person in your family on the spectrum ever wanted to excavate actual artifacts (some 8\,000 years old)? Excavate fossils? Touch and hold actual artifacts? Learn how prehistoric peoples lived? Do they like prehistoric animals? What about playing with clay to make pots? We have all these activities and more!
