DESCRIPTION:Dr. Cyler Conrad (University of New Mexico) \nThe popular Hollywood film\, The Bridge on the River Kwai\, portrays an important series of events for prisoners of war during World War II in Thailand\, also known as the infamous China-Burma-India theater of conflict. While the film’s creative story garnered acclaim and praise after its release in 1957\, it masked the true experience of these prisoners in Thailand during the war. This talk will focus on the legacy of Hendrik Robert van Heekeren\, a prisoner captured by the Japanese in 1942 and sent to the “Railroad of Death” camps in Thailand in 1943. van Heekeren’s experience during the war including captivity and work on the railroad – common scenes depicted in the film – but his legacy stems from the significant archaeological work and contributions he completed while a prisoner of war and after in Thailand\, during the 1960s. SUMMARY:The Art of Food in Ancient Egypt
DESCRIPTION:When modern observers think of ancient Egyptian food\, they will usually come up with an image of the deceased seated in front of a pile of mysterious objects. Others may call to mind the offering formula of 1000 of bread and 1000 of beer\, and then pause\, unsure what comes next. This presentation will look beyond the bread and beer to investigate the complexities of pharaonic cuisine. \nLyn Green received her PhD from the University of Toronto for a dissertation on the royal women of the end of the 18th dynasty (from the reign of Thutmose IV to that of Horemheb). She has excavated at Tell el-Amarna and at East Karnak and worked for the Akhenaten Temple Project\, researching the talatat blocks used to build the palaces and temples of Akhenaten. Currently she is a Research Associate of the Royal Ontario Museum.\nHer published articles cover many varied aspects of ancient Egyptian culture\, including crowns and regalia\, feasting\, dance\, religion\, medicine\, clothing and beauty\, sexuality\, history\, music and art in a wide variety of publications. These include: The Oxford Encyclopaedia of Ancient Egypt; KMT magazine; the Journal of the SSEA and the Routledge Encyclopaedia of Egyptian Archaeology; Egypt\, Israel\, and the Ancient Mediterranean World: Studies in Honor of Donald B. Redford; and more.

SUMMARY:Synoikismos: The Formation and Form of Ancient Greek Cities
DESCRIPTION:In-person lecture by Bradley Ault \nFollowing the Late Bronze Age “collapse” of Mycenaean civilization (ca. 1200 BCE)\, the formative Greek states and the palace centers that spawned them had vanished. What emerged in their wake over the course of the following centuries was the city-state or polis\, a system with a remarkably different pedigree. Bottom-up formations rather than top-down creations\, established by people and populations\, rather than implemented by aristocratic monarchies. More than 1000 such city-states existed in the ancient Greek world\, some 600 in the Aegean homeland and another 400 in colonial settings abroad. That is how successful this system proved to be. This lecture will explore not only the mechanisms of Greek city-state formation\, but the character of its urban core\, and especially how this organization reflected its socio-cultural profile.

DESCRIPTION:Reproduction and circulation\, when thought about in the context of money or bodies\, appear to be highly gendered phenomena. Intricate connections between different systems of exchange and gender have been recognized around the globe\, in different societies and different periods. SUMMARY:HERMOGENES AND HELLENISTIC-ROMAN TEMPLE BUILDING IN GREECE AND ASIA MINOR: MESSON – TEOS – MAGNESIA – SARDIS
DESCRIPTION:New excavations in Turkey have rekindled interest in Hermogenes\, the Hellenistic architect whom Vitruvius credits with a number of temple innovations (e.g. the eustylos and pseudodipteros temple types). The recent excavations of the temple of Dionysos at Teos (Prof. Musa Kadioğlu) have provided new evidence about Hermogenes’ eustylos at this location. This conference brings together specialists from Turkey\, Greece\, and the U.S. in order to contextualize this renewed attention on Hermogenes in view of current research on temple architecture in both Greece and Turkey as well as the reception of Hellenistic architecture in Rome. SUMMARY:Kathleen M. Lynch\, PhD\, University of Cincinnati: Wine and Truth: The Ancient Greek Symposium
DESCRIPTION:Biography: \nKathleen is a Classical Archaeologist who has worked on sites in Italy\, Greece\, Albania\, and Turkey. In particular\, she is a ceramic specialist interested in Athenian figured wares from archaeological contexts. Her research currently spans a number of ceramic related topics from issues of Attic chronology to iconography to symposia to the Greek household. In addition\, her research considers the role trade played in shaping Attic potters’ and painters’ outputs. In general\, the goal of Kathleen’s research is to place material culture back into its context of use in order to understand better the people who used the objects. She is currently publishing ceramic material from Gordion and the excavations of the Athenian Agora. \nKathleen’s book\, The Symposium in Context\, ASCSA Publications\, won the 2013 AIA Wiseman Award for best book in archaeology. She won the 2014 UC Dolly A.B. Cohen Award for excellence in teaching\, and the Provost’s Award for faculty excellence in 2016. \nAt UC she teaches Classical Mythology and courses on Greek and Roman archaeology. \nWhen she isn’t poring over pottery\, she enjoys knitting and gardening. \nAbstract: \nThe ancient Greeks developed an elaborate system of preparing and serving wine\, enjoyed by small groups of men in a practice called the symposium. This form of wine drinking required specialized pottery shapes\, and these shapes frequently bear self-referential sympotic or cultural imagery. As the wine warmed the drinkers\, they formed bonds that carried over into their daily lives including providing political allies\, a particularly useful thing in the early years of Athenian democracy. This talk will explore the immensely important social role of Greek wine drinking as well as the surprisingly underwhelming role of food in Archaic and Classical Athens (600-400 B.C.). We’ll examine the cupboards of an ancient house to understand the importance of the symposium to real Athenians. Feel free to enjoy a glass of wine during the lecture!
