SUMMARY:Unearthing A Slave Community
DESCRIPTION:Over the next several years\, we will be examining a number of different archaeological sites. What makes Montpelier a wonderful property for surveys and excavations is its relative undisturbed condition. All of the sites we excavate have never been plowed–and most were abandoned in the 1840s\, leaving the archaeological features in pristine condition. \nThis season we will be excavating the Blacksmith Shop complex at the Madison plantation. All of our current projects are part of a larger effort to interpret and reconstruct the lives of the enslaved community so it can be accessed by visitors. \nThe LEARN Archaeology Expedition program has been operating at Montpelier for a decade-and-a-half\, with many of the same volunteers returning year after year. We are\, however\, keen to add new faces to the program. All of the scheduled programs are designed to give participants actual excavation experience on an archaeological site working side-by-side with trained professional archaeologists. We have a staff of six archaeologists who work with participants both in the lab and in the field\, which means you have personal interaction with archaeological staff and this allows you to work on sensitive features\, artifacts\, and deposits that normally one would not get to handle. You are treated as a member of the research team and we step you through the entire excavation process. Registrations are cut off at our attendance limit\, so the sooner you register\, the better. \nGlenn Meyer\nARCE-NC ePublicity \nAbout the Lecture:\nThe Deipnosophistae is a late second- to early third-century CE dialogue written by grammarian Athenaeus of Naucratis. The text follows the style and themes of Plato’s Symposium\, presenting an imaginary conversation between philosophers that takes place during a Roman banquet. Scholars have found value in the Deipnosophistae for its inclusion of lengthy quotations from earlier Greek texts that have otherwise been lost. It provides key insight as to the historical resources and documents available to the educated classes during the height of the Roman Empire. Included in the Deipnosophistae are multiple historical accounts of Egypt–including descriptions of its geography and climate\, the history of Egyptian wine\, and stories about various rulers (including a description of a massive parade during the reign of Ptolemy Philadelphus). My talk will focus on how Athenaeus viewed the ancient Egyptian past\, and will place this in context with broader visions of Ancient Egypt during the Roman Empire. \nAbout the Speaker:\nDr. Carly Maris is a Visiting Assistant Professor in the History Department at the University of San Diego. Her research looks broadly at Western perceptions of the East\, and explores how Near Eastern culture influenced the Roman empire. She is currently working on a book titled Parades of Antiquity\, in which she explores the history of imperial parades in the Near East\, and how they impacted the spectacle of Roman triumphal parades up through the early Byzantine period.

SUMMARY:An Archaeologist\, World War II and Prehistoric Thailand
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Cyler Conrad (University of New Mexico) \nThe popular Hollywood film\, The Bridge on the River Kwai\, portrays an important series of events for prisoners of war during World War II in Thailand\, also known as the infamous China-Burma-India theater of conflict. While the film’s creative story garnered acclaim and praise after its release in 1957\, it masked the true experience of these prisoners in Thailand during the war. This talk will focus on the legacy of Hendrik Robert van Heekeren\, a prisoner captured by the Japanese in 1942 and sent to the “Railroad of Death” camps in Thailand in 1943. van Heekeren’s experience during the war including captivity and work on the railroad – common scenes depicted in the film – but his legacy stems from the significant archaeological work and contributions he completed while a prisoner of war and after in Thailand\, during the 1960s. The lecture discusses the intersection of van Heekeren\, prisoners in Thailand during World War II\, The Bridge on the River Kwai\, and the broader record of prehistoric archaeology influenced by these events \nvia Zoom

SUMMARY:The Art of Food in Ancient Egypt
DESCRIPTION:When modern observers think of ancient Egyptian food\, they will usually come up with an image of the deceased seated in front of a pile of mysterious objects. Others may call to mind the offering formula of 1000 of bread and 1000 of beer\, and then pause\, unsure what comes next. This presentation will look beyond the bread and beer to investigate the complexities of pharaonic cuisine. \nLyn Green received her PhD from the University of Toronto for a dissertation on the royal women of the end of the 18th dynasty (from the reign of Thutmose IV to that of Horemheb). She has excavated at Tell el-Amarna and at East Karnak and worked for the Akhenaten Temple Project\, researching the talatat blocks used to build the palaces and temples of Akhenaten. Currently she is a Research Associate of the Royal Ontario Museum.\nHer published articles cover many varied aspects of ancient Egyptian culture\, including crowns and regalia\, feasting\, dance\, religion\, medicine\, clothing and beauty\, sexuality\, history\, music and art in a wide variety of publications. These include: The Oxford Encyclopaedia of Ancient Egypt; KMT magazine; the Journal of the SSEA and the Routledge Encyclopaedia of Egyptian Archaeology; Egypt\, Israel\, and the Ancient Mediterranean World: Studies in Honor of Donald B. Redford; and more.
