SUMMARY:UConn Stamford Anthropology Society Field Trip to Yale University & HRAF
DESCRIPTION:On Friday\, October 20\, the Human Relations Area Files at Yale University will host an event in celebration of Archaeology Day. This will be HRAF’s second annual Archaeology Day event co-sponsored by the UConn Stamford Anthropology Society. \nStudents from the University of Connecticut have been invited to New Haven for a day exploring archaeology and cross-cultural research. We will begin our day with coffee in downtown New Haven followed by a tour of the historic Yale University campus led by Matthew Longcore\, Director of Membership and Outreach at HRAF and Anthropology adjunct faculty member at UConn Stamford. \nFollowing the tour\, the group will visit the HRAF offices at 755 Prospect Street for lunch featuring famous New Haven pizza. After lunch\, there will be a presentation on cross-cultural research from HRAF President Carol Ember followed by a workshop that introduces archaeology through illustration from HRAF Office Assistant Haley Brown. The day will conclude with a visit to the Yale University Art Gallery.

SUMMARY:PLANO ARCHEOLOGY FAIR
DESCRIPTION:This year’s Archeology Fair will be held at the Plano Boys and Girls Club on October 21st! \nThe Fair is a FREE event which offers budding “junior archaeologists” an opportunity to participate in a mock excavation while learning proper excavation techniques and basic archaeological concepts from professionally trained archaeologists. Children also participate in Archaeology Land. In Archaeology Land\, children are provided an activity workbook and learn interesting facts about the prehistoric inhabitants of northcentral Texas and their lifestyle as they move from activity to activity. At each station\, children participate in a hands-on activity\, such as corn grinding\, pottery design replication\, rock painting\, basket weaving\, bracelet making\, and corn husk dolls. Demonstrations by flintknappers and atlatl throwers provide insight into the technologies of prehistoric peoples. Performances by the Bear Claw Singers\, a Native American drummer and singer group who have shared their talents with the Archaeology Fair for the past ten years\, are a highlight and a crowd favorite.

SUMMARY:Archaeology Day at the Frontier Culture Museum
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, October 21st is International Archaeology Day\, and the Frontier Culture Museum is offering archaeological activities all day! \nBut just what is archaeology and why are we talking about it at a living history museum? Archaeology is the study of patterns of material culture\, the tangible things that people made and used. Things that are still around\, just in the ground beneath us. Archaeology gives us a snapshot of the past. Objects enter the ground\, a house decays leaving only the foundation. We only get to see the remnants\, not the activity. History\, on the other hand\, is the study of human behavior in the past\, based on the records people themselves have left behind. You can see where one might inform the other. Both involve asking questions\, forming hypotheses and doing research. \nWe look at all of these clues\, carefully piece the fragments of a moment in time together\, and create a picture of what life was like\, for example\, on the frontier. \nSo\, what does Archaeology Day at the Frontier Culture Museum mean? It means walking around our Old World loop\, the farms from places people left behind to come to the New World\, and learning about different types of artifacts\, like metal and ceramics\, and also a little bit about experimental archaeology. It also means heading over to the New World section and being able to try your hand at excavation in our dig boxes and learning a bit about what happens after the artifacts are excavated. Plus\, come see our experimental pottery firing on the Eastern Woodlands Indian site as we celebrate International Archaeology Day!
