SUMMARY:The splendor and misery of the inhabitants of Písek in Bohemia in the early modern era
DESCRIPTION:Lecture in Prachenske Museum in Písek\, Bohemia.\nRoyal town of Písek was founded in 13th century AD on the commercial crossroads. Archaeological findings from the last decades also shed new light on the lifestyle of the inhabitants of the town of Písek in the 16th and the first half of the 17th centuries. The Renaissance\, and especially the Rudolfinian period\, is a sign of conjuncture in all areas of human activity in the Czech lands. On the one hand\, there are written sources showing the wealth of the inhabitants of that time\, and on the other\, there are finds of various imports of precious commodities (like imported majolica from Italy and Catalania\, as well the example of porcelaine of Ming dynasty). The vanity of this period is\, however\, linked to the sharp indebtedness of the municipality of Písek. This is joined by confessional jealousy between Catholics and Protestants\, leading to the Thirty Years’ War and the decline of the town as a whole\, when its status temporarily changes from a royal city to a vassal city.

SUMMARY:The Enduring Lifestyle of the Ancestral Maya
DESCRIPTION:Borowski lecture \nAncient tropical societies dealt with the same issues we face today—climate instability\, growing populations\, overuse of resources\, and so on. One of the major issues at present is growing concern about providing adequate supplies of clean drinking water. We can learn from past tropical societies\, including the ancestral Maya of Central America\, whose cities supplied clean water via sophisticated\, self-cleaning reservoirs (i.e.\, constructed wetlands) for over 1\,000 years. Their long-term success demonstrates the enduring usefulness of self-cleaning reservoirs or constructed wetlands\, as I illustrate with the Classic Maya (c. 250-900 CE). I conclude with discussing the vital importance of preserving cultural heritage for descendants\, tourism—and to benefit our future through the lessons the past embodies

SUMMARY:8th Annual Archaeologists for Autism
DESCRIPTION:The Archaeologists for Autism mission is to unlock the potential of children and young adults with autism and autism related disorders. We aim to provide a chance to experience archaeology in a fun\, low stress environment and on their terms. \nWe are a non-profit 501(c) (3) association consisting of all volunteers and no one receives a salary or other compensation. We depend entirely on donations from the public and all funds go directly to running AFA.\nWe have partnered with various autism agencies and organizations as well as the archaeology and paleontology communities to run these events each year. \nHas the person in your family on the spectrum ever wanted to excavate actual artifacts (some 8\,000 years old)? Excavate fossils? Touch and hold actual artifacts? Learn how prehistoric peoples lived? Do they like prehistoric animals? What about playing with clay to make pots? We have all these activities and more!

In particular\, “Joining a Meeting” should show you what you need to do to join this lecture. \nIf you have any questions before you register\, please send email to arcencZoom@gmail.com. \nAbout the Lecture: \nSince the early days of Egyptology it has been a commonplace that the Egyptian temple was conceived and decorated by the ancient Egyptians as an image of the world. Every visitor of any Egyptian temple would agree at once after a look at the ceiling covered with yellow stars on blue field and after a look at the columns with the floral design of their capitals. This is also true for the temple of Edfu. \nThe impression\, however\, that the temple was imagined to be an image of the world is not only gained by the outer appearance of the building and its decoration\, which strike the eye and cannot be unnoticed. \nThere are several other elements of the temple’s architecture and decoration which don’t catch the visitor’s eye immediately because they need some previous knowledge and some elucidation. This concerns the texts in particular. \nAbout the Speaker: \nDr. Dieter Kurth\, Prof-Dr Emeritus of Hamburg Univ\, is the director of the Edfu Project\, which he founded in 1985 with the aim of translating all the hieroglyphic inscriptions in the Temple of Edfu. From 1981 to 1982 he was a professor of Egyptology in Heidelberg\, acting for Prof Jan Assmann\, and from 1982 until his retirement in 2007 he was professor of Egyptology at the University of Hamburg. \nHe studied pedagogics in Bonn from 1962 until 1965. Afterwards\, until 1967\, he worked as a teacher at a primary school and a secondary school in Cologne\, finally teaching technical English at a vocational school. From 1968 until 1975 he studied Egyptology (main subject)\, Classical Archaeology\, Ancient Oriental Languages and Prehistory at the University of Cologne. After the promotion (PhD) he habilitated in the 1980s (venia legendi in Egyptology). In the years 2000 and 2004/5 he taught Egyptology as a visiting professor at the Egyptian Universities of Cairo (Ain Shams) and Qena (New Valley).

SUMMARY:Arkhaios Cultural Heritage and Archaeology Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:The Arkhaios Cultural Heritage and Archaeology Film Festival is an annual juried competition\, part of the Archaeology Month Celebrations taking place in the United States. It is also an educational event\, showcasing the discovery of past cultures gained from ethnological or archaeological research\, illustrated by documentary films. These films are of great artistic and scientific quality but may be unknown because of limited access to traditional distribution channels. It also encourages the interest of local filmmakers to apply their art to State history. This in-person event is free and open to the public\, no tickets or pre-registration is required. Festival films are also available virtually for free on the Arkhaios website the second week of October.
