Dr. Tzonou studies ancient Greece and will answer questions about all things archaeology.\n-About Dr. Ioulia Tzonou: Dr. Tzonou is the Associate Director of Corinth Excavations at the American School of Classical Studies at Athens. She curates the substantial collection of artifacts at the Museum of Ancient Corinth\, including 190\,000 physical objects and half a million digital records. A native of Siatista in Western Macedonia\, Dr. Tzonou graduated from the University of Athens and earned an MA and Ph.D. from the University of Cincinnati. SUMMARY:PLANO ARCHEOLOGY FAIR
DESCRIPTION:This year’s Archeology Fair will be held at the Plano Boys and Girls Club on October 21st! \nThe Fair is a FREE event which offers budding “junior archaeologists” an opportunity to participate in a mock excavation while learning proper excavation techniques and basic archaeological concepts from professionally trained archaeologists. Children also participate in Archaeology Land. In Archaeology Land\, children are provided an activity workbook and learn interesting facts about the prehistoric inhabitants of northcentral Texas and their lifestyle as they move from activity to activity. At each station\, children participate in a hands-on activity\, such as corn grinding\, pottery design replication\, rock painting\, basket weaving\, bracelet making\, and corn husk dolls. Demonstrations by flintknappers and atlatl throwers provide insight into the technologies of prehistoric peoples. Performances by the Bear Claw Singers\, a Native American drummer and singer group who have shared their talents with the Archaeology Fair for the past ten years\, are a highlight and a crowd favorite.

SUMMARY:Archaeology Day at the Frontier Culture Museum
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, October 21st is International Archaeology Day\, and the Frontier Culture Museum is offering archaeological activities all day! \nBut just what is archaeology and why are we talking about it at a living history museum? Archaeology is the study of patterns of material culture\, the tangible things that people made and used. Things that are still around\, just in the ground beneath us. Archaeology gives us a snapshot of the past. Objects enter the ground\, a house decays leaving only the foundation. We only get to see the remnants\, not the activity. History\, on the other hand\, is the study of human behavior in the past\, based on the records people themselves have left behind. You can see where one might inform the other. Both involve asking questions\, forming hypotheses and doing research. \nWe look at all of these clues\, carefully piece the fragments of a moment in time together\, and create a picture of what life was like\, for example\, on the frontier. \nSo\, what does Archaeology Day at the Frontier Culture Museum mean? It means walking around our Old World loop\, the farms from places people left behind to come to the New World\, and learning about different types of artifacts\, like metal and ceramics\, and also a little bit about experimental archaeology. It also means heading over to the New World section and being able to try your hand at excavation in our dig boxes and learning a bit about what happens after the artifacts are excavated. Plus\, come see our experimental pottery firing on the Eastern Woodlands Indian site as we celebrate International Archaeology Day!

SUMMARY:A Tour of the Clinton and Kalamazoo Canal

Cost: $15 for members of the Rochester Hills Museum; $20 for non-members. Register on the site and bring the fee to the tour start. Meet at the old Clinton Township Hall\, located in the Historic Village just south of the Clinton-Macomb Library\, 40700 Romeo Plank Road\, Clinton Twp.\, MI 48038.

SUMMARY:Augmented Reality Maya Chocolate Plate
DESCRIPTION:Drop-in Activity \nFor International Archaeology Day\, “shrink” yourself down to “walk” into an ancient Maya vessel using augmented reality! Maya women were often essential for uniting kingdoms. When a marriage was arranged between Maya royal families\, kings would exchange gifts like this ceramic three-legged plate for serving chocolate. Use the museum’s iPad as a “magic window” to discover fine details on one such plate that cannot be seen on the actual artifact. A gallery facilitator will guide you through the experience and will share more about the Maya. \nRegular museum admission rates apply. \nPhoto © Tony Rinaldo
