DESCRIPTION:To kick off Texas Archeology Month\, join the Denton County Historical Commission for the Denton Dig It! Archaeology Fair at the Denton County Historical Park in Denton\, Texas on Saturday October 1 from 9 AM to 1 PM. Visit the Fair’s activities located between the Taylor Log Cabin and the Denton County African American Museum adjoining the Denton Community Market. \nFun and educational activities for the entire family! Throughout the event attendees can:\n• Watch blacksmiths forge utensils similar to those found at the historic Tom Cook blacksmith shop in Bolivar\, Texas\n• View artifacts recovered from the TxDOT Bolivar excavations with Archeologist Doug Boyd\, and learn more about the Sartin Hotel in Bolivar and the Chisholm Trail in Denton County\n• Dig like an archeologist at the “Clues in the Dirt” activity directed by local Scouts. Try your hand at unearthing and documenting human artifacts from the past\, and discover what surprises await in the Scouts’ “Trash Can Archeology” activity\n• Watch a flintknapper make stone tools\, and view an earth oven demonstration by Archeologist Alexandra Younger. Registrations are limited to 100\, so the sooner you register\, the better. \nCartonnage of Djedhor in the Detroit Institute of Art \nAbout the Lecture:\n \nAfter the New Kingdom\, wealthy Egyptians were sent to their afterlives in dazzling decorated and inscribed coffins which were nested like Russian dolls. Our understanding of these vessels for rebirth centers on the city of Thebes\, and focuses on dating the coffins through changes in their layout. Local traditions have long been neglected and assumed to be derivative of the Theban tradition; the work of artists and scribes outside of Thebes is often dismissed as “naive” or “provincial”–though\, in reality\, we know very little about the workshops that produced coffins\, or the training of the artists and scribes who worked in them. \nA large number of coffins are thought to come from the city of Akhmim\, two hundred kilometers north of Thebes\, and these present an excellent opportunity to characterize and evaluate a regional tradition. Unfortunately\, the cemeteries of Akhmim were thoroughly plundered in the late 19th century\, flooding the art market with coffins that had no find context and which can only be stylistically dated relative to similar Theban pieces. \nA careful study and comparison of the artistic and scribal hands that produced these coffins opens the door to a more detailed understanding of the development of a vibrant regional style over a period of nearly seven-hundred years between the end of the New Kingdom and the beginning of the Ptolemaic period. Driving this development were artists working in multi-generational workshops. Their work expresses not only the desires of their clientele\, the Akhmim elite\, but the methods\, training\, creativity\, and skill of the scribes and painters who decorated coffins at Akhmim. \n \nAbout the Speaker: \nDr. Kea M. Johnston graduated from the University of California\, Berkeley\, with a PhD in Egyptology in 2022. Her PhD thesis deals with workshops that produced coffins at the Egyptian site of Akhmim in the period between 1100 and 330 BCE. She is interested in both the content and materiality of textual inscription on coffins\, and Egyptian funerary art generally. She is also interested in using her skills as a software engineer to build tools that can be used for answering questions in the study of the Humanities. Kea is both a researcher and a technological lead on “The Book of the Dead in 3D” project (https://3dcoffins.berkeley.edu/) and has done fieldwork at the site of el-Hibeh with the UC Berkeley Expedition. SUMMARY:King Midas of the Golden Touch in Context: Death\, Belief\, Behavior\, and Society in Ancient Phrygia
DESCRIPTION:Professor Elspeth Dusinberre will present her current work on the spectacular burial tumuli at Gordion (Turkey)\, the capital of ancient Phrygia and seat of the legendary (but historical) King Midas of the Golden Touch. This talk will consider material ranging from ca. 850-525 BCE. It will begin with Gordion’s oldest burial tumuli and look at the largest\, the so-called Midas Monument\, but it will focus ultimately on the last century or so of tumulus construction. The later tombs\, which include both inhumations and cremations\, display radical changes that reflect Gordion’s complex and shifting society. This talk will use mortuary remains to investigate such issues as power structures and display\, gender\, burial customs\, belief in an afterlife\, shifting populations\, and developments in society overall in ancient Phrygia.

SUMMARY:Missouri Egyptological Symposium in St. Louis
DESCRIPTION:This is the Fourth Annual Missouri Egyptological Symposium\, and this year we are holding it at the Washington University in St. Louis. New this year\, we will host our first keynote lecture: Dr. Rita Lucarelli (Associate Professor of Egyptology\, University of California\, Berkeley) will give a talk the Friday before the symposium (Oct. 14). on “Sun Ra\, Afrofuturism\, and the Reception of Ancient Egypt.” The symposium itself (all day Saturday Oct. 15) will include a dozen papers on ancient Egyptian religion and language\, the reception of Ancient Egypt (i.e. in Midwest architecture and in Tolkien)\, Egyptology and Public History\, and a session on learning from coffins and mummified remains.
