SUMMARY:Archaeology-Hour Screening: The Archaeology of Alphabets and Abecedaries
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for an in-person screening and informal discussion of the Archaeology Hour talk by Stephen Houston and Felipe Rojas (Brown University). \nA large part of the globe uses an alphabet of some sort. But what does it mean when it is put on display as an “abecedary\,” a graphic sequence of letters? This talk explores the abecedary as a means of promoting a “secondary system” of writing — the alphabet — long after the primary inventions of script in Egypt\, China\, and Mesoamerica. \nThis event is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Hot Histories: How Chile Peppers Conquered the World
DESCRIPTION:Katherine Chiou (University of Alabama/AIA National lecturer) \nToday\, chili peppers are central to cuisines across Asia\, Africa\, Europe\, and the Americas\, but all domesticated chili peppers trace their origins to the Indigenous\npeoples of the Americas. Drawing on archaeology\, botany\, and history\, this lecture explores how chili peppers were first domesticated\, how they spread across ancient\nsocieties in the Americas\, and how global trade and colonialism transformed them into one of the world’s most influential foods. From ancient farmers and cooks to\nmodern global cuisine\, this talk traces the remarkable story of how a small pepper reshaped the human experience of flavor.
