Project Description:

The pack is combination of two Balkan Heritage Field School (BHFS) projects focused on Ancient Greek and Roman Archaeology, History and Culture. It provides students interested in Archaeology and Ancient Greek and Roman World a comprehensive experience (from six to eight weeks, covering the Classical, Hellenistic, Roman and Early Byzantine periods) at two different sites in two neighboring European countries: Stobi in the Republic of Macedonia and emporion Pistiros in Bulgaria. What is more, by choosing to participate in the pack BHFS participants will benefit from the considerably reduced admission fees and faster registration.

The ANCIENT GREEK AND ROMAN PACK combines the following Balkan Heritage Field School (BHFS) projects:

Stobi (Macedonia Secunda) Excavations, Macedonia (STOBI.EXC 19)

Ancient Greeks in the Land of Dionysos – Excavation of Emporion Pistiros in Thrace, Bulgaria (PIS.EXC.19)

Period(s) of Occupation: In Pistiros: Classical Antiquity - Classical and Hellenistic; in Stobi: Roman, Late Roman.

Notes:
The archaeological field school at Stobi takes place at the spectacular Roman city and offers opportunities for excellent training in field techniques and methods for excavation and documentation, regarding the specifics of excavation at Roman and Late Roman urban site; The agenda includes an intensive course on Photogrammetry, 3-D Archaeological Recording and Modelling in collaboration with Queen’s University, Canada, as well as guided tours of significant historical and archaeological sites in Bitola and Ohrid (R. of Macedonia) and the ancient Macedonian capitals Pella and Aigai/Vergina (Greece). The field school at Pistiros - an ancient Greek trade center and river harbor located deep in ancient Thrace: the land of origin of Dionysos and Orpheos focuses on Classical and field archaeology as well as finds processing & RTI, as well as studying the interactions between ancient Greek and Thracian civilizations.

Minimum Length of Stay for Volunteers: 1 session (six weeks)

Experience Required: None experience required. However, the project is not recommended for individuals with solar allergies or other special illnesses that might be exacerbated during the intensive outdoor activities.

Room and Board Arrangements:
Pack's locations: Stobi, Republic of Macedonia and Karabunar, Bulgaria. Participants in the pack will be expected to arrive first in Stobi.  At Stobi: Participants will be accommodated in recently furbished cabins (furnished, air-conditioned, free Wi-Fi) at the archaeological site, in rooms with two to three beds. Every cabin has 4 bedrooms + living room, 2 bathrooms with shower and WC. There is also a washing machine available for free. Participants are not expected to bring bedclothes or towels. Three meals per day are covered by the admission fee. Requests for vegetarian food are accepted! At Karabunar: "Villa Terres" will host the field school in 2019. It is a newly built SPA complex & Winery in the village Karabunar. Accommodation in comfortable rooms with two beds and suits with three beds (bathrooms with shower and WC), equipped with air-conditioning and TV. The hotel swimming pool & SPA facilities  as well as Wi-Fi can be used for free. Cheap laundry service is available. During the project work days all participants will be given a lift from the hotel to the site (that is located 14 km away) and back. Three meals (fresh, organic Bulgarian homemade food) per day are covered by the admission fee. Cost: Starting from € 3300 (approx. $3745). Check current exchange rates. The Admission fee includes: educational and fieldwork activities, full-board accommodation (hotel + 3 meals per day), tools, materials, project Handbooks (in pdf and a hard copy upon arrival), issue of Certificate of Attendance, excursions/sightseeing tours/entrance fees and administrative costs.

Academic Credit:
New Bulgarian University (NBU) grants up to 18 credits to students in European universities for participation in the field school project sessions that are part of the ANCIENT GREEK AND ROMAN PACK. Participation in any two-week/four-week session of each of the field school projects in the pack is awarded with 6/12 credit hours (ECTS)*. Participants in the various sessions of the pack can obtain maximum of 18 ECTS* credits (Please refer to the list below!). They are allowed to require credits only for particular field school project sessions in the Pack, so practically they have choice between 6, 12, 15 and 18 ECTS. Connecticut College grants 8 semester credit units (equivalent to 12 quarter units) to all students who study outside Europe for attending one four-week session of this field school pack for a tuition fee of 1500 USD (Please refer to the list below!) credits offered by New Bulgarian University, Sofia, Bulgaria.
