Project Description:

This Umbro-Etruscan necropolis was first excavated in 1855 by Domenico Golini, and work continued in the mid twentieth century and later by the archaeological superintendency, with more recent excavations in 2017 and 2019. Around 50 chamber tombs have been discovered to date, and a remarkable tomb built from travertine blocks was discovered in 2019. We will continue to excavate around the vicinity of this tomb, and plan to explore an adjacent plateau of Copio, where we hypothesize the settlement was located. Survey data indicates the occupation of Copio may have extended from the Iron Age to the Roman period.

Period(s) of Occupation: The necropolis dates between the late seventh/early sixth century B.C. to the fourth B.C. Survey data suggests that the use of the adjacent plateau of Copio (where we plan to expand) may extend into the Roman period.

Notes:
This project is a collaboration between the Università degli Studi di Perugia, Kent State University, the municipality of Montecchio and the Soprintendenza Archeologia, Belle Arti e Paesaggio dell’Umbria. Italian and American university students will be working together at the site. Participants will be trained in excavation techniques, recording methods, and artifact processing, and learn about the site history. They will also work with artifacts from the current or previous seasons in the local museum. Occasional field trips to other ancient sites and/or museums in the region will take place as well.

Room and Board Arrangements:
€ 2,500 The fee includes accommodation, food, daily transport between Montecchio and the excavation site, and occasional visits to local sites in the region. Airfare, and health/travel insurance are not included (proof of medical insurance required). Accommodation: All participants will be staying in lodging (most likely a hotel or apartments) in the town of Montecchio (a short distance from the excavation site). Rooms and bathrooms will be shared. Most meals except breakfast will be prepared together, or served at a local restaurant, except on the weekends. Excavation will take place Monday through Friday. Participants are encouraged to travel on the weekends (Rome, Florence and other popular destinations are accessible on public transportation); weekend travel expenses are not included in the fee. Please inform us about any dietary restrictions or medical problems when applying. Required: appropriate clothes for excavation work in hot, sunny weather (loose fitting shirts with sleeves, long pants, gloves, hat with brim; steel-toed work shoes or boots in particular are required).
