American Research Center in Sofia

January 15, 2013

Graduate and advanced undergraduate students enrolled at North American academic institutions (or academic institutions accredited in North America) engaged in research in any field of the humanities and social sciences with a focus on Bulgaria or the Balkan peninsula.

The Fellowships are of 9-month (September-May) or 3-month (September-November or February-April) duration. Graduate students are eligible for both 9- and 3-month Fellowships; advanced undergraduate students are eligible for 3-month Fellowships. In addition to independent research, Fellows will participate in the academic program of ARCS which includes a lecture series, seminars, and excursions designed to provide a broad thematic vision of Bulgarian and Balkan history and culture from prehistory to the present.

Fellows receive a monthly cash stipend ($600/month), housing in Bulgaria, language instruction, and up to $1,000 for travel expenses between North America and Bulgaria. Moreover, travel expenses within the academic program are covered by ARCS.
