Assistant Research Archaeologist
The Desert Research Institute (DRI) is seeking to fill a full-time position for an Assistant Research Archaeologist (Rank II). This position will be based at DRI’s Southern Nevada Science Center (SNSC) in Las Vegas, Nevada and will provide support to ongoing cultural resources projects including archaeological and historical research, data analysis and reporting. The faculty member will be working in a collaborative environment with other archaeologists on a daily basis in both the office and the field. The appointee will assist in the pursuit of research contracts and grants to support his/her salary and have the opportunity to develop his/her own research avenues.
The Assistant Research Archaeologist will perform the following activities: 1) conduct archaeological survey, monitoring, excavation, and data recovery efforts. Maintain and clean field/lab equipment and supplies, 2) process artifacts and other samples collected during field work, identify and analyze collected materials and prepare database of results, 3) conduct research, write technical content, prepare illustrations, produce and submit reports to clients, 4) maintain accurate notes and record-keeping of all field, lab and report preparation activities, 5) direct and train field crews, supervise staff in laboratory processing tasks and delegate tasks as necessary.
Candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree in anthropology/archaeology; at least 7 years of experience conducting cultural resource inventories, recording cultural resources, completing archaeological artifact and site descriptions; demonstrated skill with MS Access database management, maps, ArcGIS and GPS technology; knowledge of relevant laws, regulations, and protocols to conduct cultural resources management in addition to Section 106 and compliance procedures; supervisory experience in the field/laboratory; prior Great Basin and Mojave Desert archaeological experience, qualifying for permit by State of Nevada; must possess a current Top Secret DOD security clearance.
