Andrew M. Smith II is Assistant Professor of Classics and history with The George Washington University, and holds his degrees from North Carolina State University (B.S. and M.A.) and the University of Maryland (Ph.D.). His areas of specialization are the history and archaeology of the Hellenistic and Roman Near East, and identity theory. Since 1997 he has been the Project Director at the Bir Madhkur Project in Jordan, and has worked at a number of other sites in Jordan (Humayma, Roman Aqaba) and Israel (Caesarea). Professor Smith’s main publications include “Beyond the Nabataean and Roman City: Surveying the Central and Southern Wadi Araba” (in Crossing Jordan: North American Contributions to the Archaeology of Jordan, 2007).
