AIA Lecturer: Karen Stern

Karen B. Stern is Assistant Professor with the History Department of Brooklyn College (CUNY), and holds her degrees from Dartmouth College (A.B.) and Brown University (A.M. and Ph.D.).  Her research interests include funerary archaeology, the Jewish culture in the Roman World (especially North Africa).  She has received numerous awards for her work, and recent publications include Inscribing Devotion and Death: Archaeological Evidence for Jewish Populations on North Africa (Religions in the Graeco-Roman World Series 161, 2008), “Keeping the Dead in their Place: Jewish Commemoration and Cultural Identity in Roman North Africa” (in Cultural Identity and the Peoples of the Ancient Mediterranean, 2010), and a forthcoming article on “Mapping Devotion in Roman Dura Europos: Reconsideration of the Synagogue Ceiling” for the American Journal of Archaeology.
