AIA Lecturer: Michael Wright

Affiliation: Imperial College, London

Michael Wright is English. He was born in London in 1948, and educated at Shrewsbury School, Oriel College (Oxford) and Imperial College (London). After a thorough grounding in the Classics he specialized in Mathematics and Physics; and at the same time he became an accomplished self-taught mechanic. He joined The Science Museum, London, in 1971 where he became curator of mechanical engineering and tools, until 2004 when he took early retirement. He has written on various aspects of these subjects, combining scholarship with a practical point of view, and his early interest in antiquity led him to a private specialization in ancient technology. His pastimes include making, mending and using scientific and musical instruments, clocks and other small mechanisms. Michael Wright is married, with two grown sons.
