Roger Smith is the State Underwater Archaeologist for Florida, has also taught at Florida State University and the University of West Florida, and is an advisor to the Maritime Archaeological and Historical Society in Washington D.C. He holds his degrees from the University of Virginia (B.A.) and Texas A&M University (M.A. and Ph.D.), and has done extensive field work on shipwrecks off the coast of Florida and in the Caribbean. His many publications include The Maritime Heritage of the Cayman Islands (2000), Vanguard of Empire: Ships of Exploration in the Age of Columbus (1993), and more recently “Luna’s Fleet and the Discovery of the First Emanuel Point Shipwreck” (The Florida Anthropologist 62, 2009), and “Florida’s Maritime Heritage Trail” (in Out of the Blue: Public Interpretation of Maritime Cultural Resources, 2007). Dr. Smith is the AIA’s McCann-Taggart Lecturer for 2010/2011.
