Abstract: History of Portraiture in the West - Portraits: Human Introspection


Most people never stop to wonder why we have people's faces on our coins and bills. The history of portraiture in the West is a fascinating study of the way in which cultures view themselves, as seen by the way individuals in each culture portray themselves. Beginning in the Ancient Near East and Egypt, progressing through Ancient Greece and Rome to the modern day, we explore together the development of portraiture right up to today. Together we trace the development of portraits from ancient coinage through European history to photography and videography
