SUMMARY:Artist Talk: Alan LeQuire
DESCRIPTION:Join the Parthenon and AIA-Nashville Society for a free in-person talk on Tuesday\, June 24\, at 6 PM at the Parthenon. Free registration required. \nRSVP: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/nashville-parthenon-artist-talk-alan-lequire-tickets-1335515766609?aff=oddtdtcreator \nAlan LeQuire will discuss the new sculptures created for the exhibition Monumental Figures. These 24 sculptures—displayed throughout the Parthenon\, inside and out—celebrate the inspirational people among us in everyday life. The figures include activists\, musicians\, athletes\, doctors and friends—elevated to the status of heroes by the large scale of the works. \nLeQuire completed the Athena Parthenos statue inside the Parthenon 35 years ago\, in 1990\, as a project in experimental archaeology. In the 1980s\, at the start of his career\, he undertook a process of research\, modeling\, planning and construction that lasted 8 years\, with further gilding and painting in 2002. Since then\, Alan has created many commemorative works and portraits. He has continued to develop his artistry\, using traditional sculptural techniques of modeling\, enlargement\, and casting\, viewing sculpting as a physical discipline. He has now mentored and trained many other younger artists. \nHear directly from Alan some reflections on his inspirations and process\, and look with him across 35 years at his career as an artist. \nABOUT THE SPEAKER:\nAlan LeQuire is a Nashville sculptor best known for his monumental figures. LeQuire began sculpting at age 11 and studied with Nashville sculptor Puryear Mims\, even before receiving his BFA from Vanderbilt University. He spent one year in Italy apprenticing with the American sculptor Milton Hebald\, and completed an MFA at University of North Carolina\, Greensboro\, continuing to study figurative sculpture with Peter Agostini. LeQuire cites the self-taught Nashville sculptor William Edmondson as among his early inspirations. \nSoon after completing his MFA in 1981\, Alan won the commission to reconstruct the Athena Parthenos statue inside Nashville’s full-scale replica of the Parthenon. He was charged with re-creating a celebrated ancient sculpture known only from partial descriptions and later\, small-scale versions. This project was completed in 1990\, after 8 years of intensive research\, consultation with leading archeologists\, modeling\, and casting–a lasting achievement in experimental archaeology. LeQuire has undertaken many additional commissions\, including individual portraits and larger work in public spaces. Among many other works\, he is known for the colossal Musica composition on Nashville’s music row\, the bronze doors of Nashville’s Main Library downtown\, and the monument to the suffragettes in Centennial Park. \nWANT TO LEARN MORE? Vividly detailed\, acutely sensitive to stratifications of gender and class\, it’s fiction that keeps you up at night — first because you’re barreling through the book\, then because you’ve slowed your pace to a crawl\, savoring the suspense.” — Boston Globe \nAmsterdam\, 1631: Sara de Vos becomes the first woman to be admitted as a master painter to the city’s Guild of St. Luke. Though women do not paint landscapes (they are generally restricted to indoor subjects)\, a wintry outdoor scene haunts Sara: She cannot shake the image of a young girl from a nearby village\, standing alone beside a silver birch at dusk\, staring out at a group of skaters on the frozen river below. Defying the expectations of her time\, she decides to paint it. \nNew York City\, 1957: The only known surviving work of Sara de Vos\, At the Edge of a Wood \, hangs in the bedroom of a wealthy Manhattan lawyer\, Marty de Groot\, a descendant of the original owner. It is a beautiful but comfortless landscape. The lawyer’s marriage is prominent but comfortless\, too. When a struggling art history grad student\, Ellie Shipley\, agrees to forge the painting for a dubious art dealer\, she finds herself entangled with its owner in ways no one could predict. \nSydney\, 2000: Now a celebrated art historian and curator\, Ellie Shipley is mounting an exhibition in her field of specialization: female painters of the Dutch Golden Age. When it becomes apparent that both the original At the Edge of a Wood and her forgery are en route to her museum\, the life she has carefully constructed threatens to unravel entirely and irrevocably. \n2024 BOOK CLUB DATES:\nMonday\, August 4\, 2025 — Lifestyles of Gods and Monsters by Emily Roberson\nMonday\, November 3\, 2025 — The Feather Thief by Kirk W. SUMMARY:Classical Washington: Greece and Rome in the Art and Architecture of DC
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a free virtual talk on Wednesday\, May 1\, at 6 PM Central. Registration required. \nRegister here: https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_qGNBDPkWRKWJUSOevFDg_A#/registration\nJoin art historian Elise Friedland for a free virtual talk on her investigation of the meaning and reception of Classical art and architecture in our nation’s capital. \nWashington\, D.C.\, is a city like no other in the United States. A Greek Doric temple (the Lincoln Memorial) sits at one end of the city’s central forum (The Mall)\, housing a colossal cult statue (Abraham Lincoln). A Roman triumphal arch monumentalizes the front of the main train depot (Union Station). Roman equestrian statues stand amidst circular plazas\, celebrating victorious American generals (Andrew Jackson in Lafayette Plaza). This talk explores the role of Greek and Roman art and architecture in the planning\, building and decorating of America’s capital city. \nThis discussion provides broader historical perspective for Neoclassical architecture in Nashville\, especially the choice of Neoclassical models and styles used for the Centennial Exposition of 1897. \nThis lecture is the Archaeological Institute for America John H. and Penelope Biggs Lecture for 2025\, a grant awarded to the AIA Nashville Society.

SUMMARY:AIA-Nashville Society Book Club: Pericles and Aspasia
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a free AIA-Nashville Society Book Club meeting at the Nashville Parthenon on Monday\, November 4\, 2024\, at 6 PM. This event is free and open to the public\, with RSVP required. All are welcome. Mention “Book Club” at the Ticket Counter\, receive free admission\, and proceed to the Treasury on Level 2 for the friendly\, informal discussion. \nTHIS QUARTER’S BOOK SELECTION:\nWe will be discussing Pericles and Aspasia by Yvonne Korshak. Reserve your seat with a free RSVP. Looking to purchase the book? Head over to Parnassus Books and mention the Archaeological Institute of America-Nashville Society book club at the Parthenon for a 10% discount. \nABOUT THE BOOK: Pericles and Aspasia by Yvonne Korshak\nDescription from Nashville Public Library: \nTwo lovers crest the wave of the golden age of Athens: Pericles\, statesman and general\, and Aspasia\, his courtesan\, a philosopher’s daughter\, and a brilliant woman in her own right. In a world of hierarchies\, he is at the top when she arrives as little more than flotsam cast up on Athenian shores. Their love transcends social sanctions\, enduring and deepening despite the grave threat it presents to Pericles’ reputation as a leader of the Athenian democracy. \nThe novel unfolds against the background of the arts and history of the Golden Age\, seen through the eyes of two individuals who lent their particular brilliance to make it “golden”: Pericles\, the great orator and visionary of democracy\, and its most influential woman\, Aspasia. Their story takes them from the Agora-Athens’ marketplace to the Acropolis\, from the raunchy Athenian Port Piraeus mercantile across the Aegean Sea to East Greece. Pericles and Aspasia—together and apart—navigate treacherous paths from venal calculations to impassioned philosophical inquiry\, from high-stakes sea battles to the passions of family life. \nPericles and Aspasia engages issues that are vital today—the paradoxes of democracy\, the tensions of hierarchy\, the ironies of gender\, and others—but this novel is immersed in classical Athens: the city\, its sunshine\, its physical presence\, its people\, and their struggles and aspirations. \nBOOK CLUB SPONSOR: AIA-Nashville Society\nThe Archaeological Institute of America (AIA) promotes archaeological inquiry and public understanding of the material record of the human past to foster an appreciation of diverse cultures and our shared humanity. SUMMARY:Virtual Symposium: A Bloom of Perpetual Newness: The Colors of Ancient Greek and Roman Sculpture
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a virtual symposium on October 1 at 6 PM Central (RSVP required). Giovanni Verri\, Conservation Scientist at the Art Institute of Chicago\, will present his recent investigations and newest research into color on ancient statues. (This symposium will not be recorded) \nREGISTER HERE: https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_VPhQwc0oTyGdFIy6zd6SIw#/registration \nABOUT THE SYMPOSIUM:\nIt is well-established that ancient sculpture was painted\, and that adding color was a finishing touch of artistic creation\, with an immediate impact on ancient viewers. However\, many questions remain about the extent of applied color. We do not fully understand the original appearance of most ancient sculptures. Dr. Verri will share insights into how ancient painters created their masterpieces\, revealed by his research using visible-induced luminescence imaging. Dr. Verri’s research makes visible pigments that are otherwise invisible to the naked eye\, yielding important new discoveries. \nABOUT THE SPEAKER:\nGiovanni Verri is a conservation scientist at the Art Institute of Chicago\, and a leading researcher investigating the pigments applied to ancient sculptures. He holds a Ph.D in physics from the University of Ferrara\, Italy\, and an MA in conservation from the Courtauld Institute on Art in London. In 2007\, he developed an imaging technique called visible-induced luminescence imaging. Using this new technique\, he has mapped the presence of Egyptian blue\, a very common blue pigment in antiquity.

SUMMARY:Symposium: Layers of Meanings in Benjamin West’s Neoclassical Venus and Cupid
DESCRIPTION:Join AIA-Nashville Society for an in-person symposium on August 19 at 6 PM at the Nashville Parthenon. This symposium is free and open to the public\, and will take place in the Naos on Level 2. RSVP required. \nVivien Green Fryd\, Professor Emerita in the History of Art and Architecture Department at Vanderbilt University\, Ph.D\, will share about American painter Benjamin West (1738-1820)\, including West’s Venus and Cupid (1765)\, part of the Parthenon permanent collection. \nABOUT THE SYMPOSIUM:\nBenjamin West’s Venus and Cupid (1765) in the Parthenon’s Cowan Collection marks the first commission this Philadelphia Quaker received upon arriving in Italy to study art. This work\, the first history painting West created in the academic tradition\, which rated history painting as the most important subject\, represents the mythological Venus\, the goddess of love\, with her son\, Cupid. It also evokes to topos of the Madonna lactans\, or the nursing Madonna\, which had been a prevalent subject throughout the Italian Renaissance\, which he studied while in Italy. West showed emotion and love between parent and child that had not existed until the 1760s\, and hence this work joins that of others created by Euro-Americans in the U.S. colonies and abroad who similarly represented changing attitudes towards child-rearing\, family relations\, and the definition of childhood. West was at the forefront of establishing neoclassical subjects and styles as the premier manner of painting during the turn of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

Describing her own remarkable vision\, the author writes in the foreword\, “I’ve chosen to give the telling of the story to Penelope and to the twelve hanged maids. The maids form a chanting and singing Chorus\, which focuses on two questions that must pose themselves after any close reading of the Odyssey : What led to the hanging of the maids\, and what was Penelope really up to? The story as told in the Odyssey doesn’t hold water: there are too many inconsistencies. I’ve always been haunted by the hanged maids and\, in The Penelopiad \, so is Penelope herself.” One of the high points of literary fiction in 2005\, this critically acclaimed story found a vast audience and is finally available in paperback. \n2024 BOOK CLUB DATES:\nRSVP: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/805084aa8af2ea5f58-aianashville#\nMonday\, February 5\, 2024\nMonday\, May 6\, 2024\nMonday\, August 5\, 2024\nMonday\, November 4\, 2024\nStay tuned for details! \nBOOK CLUB SPONSOR: AIA-Nashville Society\nThe Archaeological Institute of America (AIA) promotes archaeological inquiry and public understanding of the material record of the human past to foster an appreciation of diverse cultures and our shared humanity.
