DESCRIPTION:On October 19\, 2024\, the Archaeological Institute of America-Nashville Society and the Nashville Parthenon are teaming up to join hundreds of archaeological organizations around the world to celebrate International Archaeology Day and the Tennessee STEAM Festival. Stop by activity stations from 9 AM – 12 PM! \nWhat is international archaeology Day at the Parthenon?\nInternational Archaeology Day is a morning full of family-friendly STEAM (Science\, Technology\, Engineering\, Arts\, and Mathematics) activities that highlight archaeological work and artifacts to share the legacy of Greek culture to raise awareness of the ancient world. Parthenon visitors at this archaeology fair event will view two special exhibits\, Contemporary Kumiko in the East Gallery and The Role of Replica in the West Gallery\, explore Level 2’s replica interior of the ancient Parthenon\, participate in activity stations\, and earn an “Official Archaeologist of the Nashville Parthenon” sticker! \nActivities include:\n-Ask an Archaeologist\, 9 AM – 12 PM: Meet Dr. Kaitlyn Stiles\, an archaeologist\, human osteologist\, and forensic anthropologist who and will answer questions about all things archaeology and archaeological science.\n–About Dr. Kaitlyn Stiles: Dr. Stiles is a Senior Archaeologist\, Osteologist\, and Project Manager for the Environmental Planning and Permitting section of Kleinfelder\, Inc\, based in California. She has done research and analysis in Greece\, Poland\, Egypt\, and the United States. She has consulted with the Greek Archaeological Service\, the Channel Islands National Park\, and the Nevada State Museum to identify and assess human skeletal remains. As a forensic anthropologist\, she has worked for the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency\, contracted by SNA International. She became a Diplomate of the American Board of Forensic Anthropology (D-ABFA) in February 2022. She has active research projects in both bioarchaeology and forensic anthropology on skeletal remains from a modern 20th century cemetery in central Greece. She has also taught classes in Forensic Anthropology and Human Osteology at the University of Nevada\, Reno.\n-Gold Leafing Demonstration\, 9 AM – 12 PM: Meet Micki & Mitch Cavanagh of Reed’s Gold Leaf\, the experts who helped guild Athena! They will be demonstrating the gold leafing process LIVE inside the Parthenon in honor of The Society of Gilders’ worldwide gilding symposium. The Society of Gilders is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the education of the gilding arts.\n-The Role of a Replica Talk\, 10:30 AM: Join a Parthenon staff member for a special tour at 10:30 AM about the making of the exhibition in the West Gallery\, The Role of a Replica.\n-Polychromy at the Parthenon\, 9 AM – 12 PM: Work with archaeologists from AIA-Nashville Society to create colorful masterpieces just like ancient statues and buildings.\n-Conservation Station\, 9 AM – 12 PM: Work to piece together ceramic fragments just like conservators study how broken fragments join to form a complete artifact. SUMMARY:Virtual Symposium: A Bloom of Perpetual Newness: The Colors of Ancient Greek and Roman Sculpture

Giovanni Verri\, Conservation Scientist at the Art Institute of Chicago\, will present his recent investigations and newest research into color on ancient statues. (This symposium will not be recorded) \nREGISTER HERE: https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_VPhQwc0oTyGdFIy6zd6SIw#/registration \nABOUT THE SYMPOSIUM:\nIt is well-established that ancient sculpture was painted\, and that adding color was a finishing touch of artistic creation\, with an immediate impact on ancient viewers. However\, many questions remain about the extent of applied color. We do not fully understand the original appearance of most ancient sculptures. Dr. Verri will share insights into how ancient painters created their masterpieces\, revealed by his research using visible-induced luminescence imaging. Dr. Verri’s research makes visible pigments that are otherwise invisible to the naked eye\, yielding important new discoveries. \nABOUT THE SPEAKER:\nGiovanni Verri is a conservation scientist at the Art Institute of Chicago\, and a leading researcher investigating the pigments applied to ancient sculptures. He holds a Ph.D in physics from the University of Ferrara\, Italy\, and an MA in conservation from the Courtauld Institute on Art in London. In 2007\, he developed an imaging technique called visible-induced luminescence imaging. Using this new technique\, he has mapped the presence of Egyptian blue\, a very common blue pigment in antiquity.

SUMMARY:Symposium: Layers of Meanings in Benjamin West’s Neoclassical Venus and Cupid
DESCRIPTION:Join AIA-Nashville Society for an in-person symposium on August 19 at 6 PM at the Nashville Parthenon. This symposium is free and open to the public\, and will take place in the Naos on Level 2. RSVP required. \nVivien Green Fryd\, Professor Emerita in the History of Art and Architecture Department at Vanderbilt University\, Ph.D\, will share about American painter Benjamin West (1738-1820)\, including West’s Venus and Cupid (1765)\, part of the Parthenon permanent collection. \nABOUT THE SYMPOSIUM:\nBenjamin West’s Venus and Cupid (1765) in the Parthenon’s Cowan Collection marks the first commission this Philadelphia Quaker received upon arriving in Italy to study art. This work\, the first history painting West created in the academic tradition\, which rated history painting as the most important subject\, represents the mythological Venus\, the goddess of love\, with her son\, Cupid. It also evokes to topos of the Madonna lactans\, or the nursing Madonna\, which had been a prevalent subject throughout the Italian Renaissance\, which he studied while in Italy. West showed emotion and love between parent and child that had not existed until the 1760s\, and hence this work joins that of others created by Euro-Americans in the U.S. colonies and abroad who similarly represented changing attitudes towards child-rearing\, family relations\, and the definition of childhood. West was at the forefront of establishing neoclassical subjects and styles as the premier manner of painting during the turn of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

DESCRIPTION:INTERNATIONAL ARCHAEOLOGY DAY AT THE PARTHENON \nOn October 21\, 2023\, the Archaeological Institute of America-Nashville Society and the Nashville Parthenon are teaming up to join hundreds of archaeological organizations around the world to celebrate International Archaeology Day and the Tennessee STEAM Festival. \nStop by activity stations from 9 AM – 12 PM! \nWHAT IS INTERNATIONAL ARCHAEOLOGY DAY AT THE PARTHENON?\nInternational Archaeology Day is a morning full of family-friendly STEAM (Science\, Technology\, Engineering\, Arts\, and Mathematics) activities that highlight archaeological work and artifacts to share the legacy of Greek culture to raise awareness of the ancient world. \nMuseum visitors at this archaeology fair event will view The Odyssey: A Retelling in the East Gallery\, explore the replica interior of the ancient Parthenon\, participate in activity stations\, and earn an “Official Archaeologist of the Nashville Parthenon” sticker! \nACTIVITIES INCLUDE:\n–Ask an Archaeologist\, 9 AM – 12 PM: Meet Dr. Ioulia Tzonou\, a Greek archaeologist visiting from Corinth Excavations in Ancient Corinth\, Greece! Dr. Tzonou studies ancient Greece and will answer questions about all things archaeology.\n-About Dr. Ioulia Tzonou: Dr. Tzonou is the Associate Director of Corinth Excavations at the American School of Classical Studies at Athens. She curates the substantial collection of artifacts at the Museum of Ancient Corinth\, including 190\,000 physical objects and half a million digital records. A native of Siatista in Western Macedonia\, Dr. Tzonou graduated from the University of Athens and earned an MA and Ph.D. from the University of Cincinnati. She has excavated sites ranging from Neolithic to Modern periods in France\, Athens\, the Argolid\, Macedonia\, and Corinth. \n–Gold Gilding Demonstration\, 9 AM – 12 PM: Meet Micki & Mitch of Reed’s Gold Leaf\, the experts who helped guild Athena! They will be demonstrating the gold gilding process LIVE inside the Parthenon in honor of The Society of Gilders’ worldwide gilding symposium. The Society of Gilders is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the education of the gilding arts. \n–The Role of a Replica Talk\, 10:30 AM: Join a Parthenon staff member for a special tour at 10:30 AM about the making of the exhibition in the West Gallery\, The Role of a Replica. \n–Polychromy at the Parthenon\, 9 AM – 12 PM: Work with archaeologists from AIA-Nashville Society to create colorful masterpieces just like ancient statues and buildings. \n–Conservation Station\, 9 AM – 12 PM: Work to piece together ceramic fragments just like conservators study how broken fragments join to form a complete artifact. Many of the ceramics come from the Centennial Art Center\, which used to be the Centennial Park Pool but now hosts art classes and workshops. \n–Experimental Archaeology\, 9 AM – 12 PM: Build miniature ancient structures with blocks and assorted materials just as archaeologists learn about the past by testing out ideas through experimentation of architectural steps and processes. \n–Research Station\, 9 AM – 12 PM: Designated the Quiet Area\, this inclusive space offers books and resources on archaeology\, ancient Greece\, and mythology. \n–Exterior Architecture Audio Tour\, available 24/7: Free audio tour in English\, Spanish\, or Arabic!

Join one of our museum archaeologists who has lived and worked in Greece at 6 PM for an up-close look at Nashville history\, American art\, and Greek mythology. \nThis modified Museum Tour will help you see the 1897 Centennial Exposition\, highlights of the permanent collection of paintings in the Cowan Gallery\, and temporary exhibitions currently on display with an archaeologist’s eye. The tour continues upstairs to Level 2\, the interior re-creation of the Parthenon as it looked in the 5th century BCE where you will view the colossal statue of Athena\, hear epic stories of Greek mythology\, and see the incredible plaster casts of the world-famous Parthenon marbles. \nAs a STEAM Night Museum Tour\, this tour is free for MNPS families visiting the Parthenon for STEAM Night. Register on Zoom: https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_dzYvt4DXQgCZraTHv7leag#/registration \nABOUT THE SYMPOSIUM: \nPanagiotis Kotsanas\, of the Kotsanas Museum of Ancient Greek Technology\, will share about replicas of ancient Greek technologies and how his museum in Greece uses replicas to help visitors learn about ancient technologies\, innovations\, and more. This talk is inspired by the new Parthenon exhibition The Role of a Replica\, opening July 14\, 2023. \nABOUT THE SPEAKER: \nPanagiotis Kotsanas studied in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the National Technical University of Athens (Greece). He has given several speeches regarding ancient Greek technology at international conferences in Greece and abroad\, such as the University of Salzburg-Salzburger Fruhlings Symposiumand the National Science Museum of Korea-ISSM.
