The Office of Archaeological Studies, in collaboration with the Santa Fe Chapter of the Archaeological Institute of America and other organizations in northern New Mexico, will host an open house at the Center for New Mexico Archaeology on Saturday, October 17, 2015 from 10 am to 4 pm. Visitors will have the opportunity to tour the building, which is the primary storage facility for New Mexico’s archaeological collections, as well as the offices and working research laboratories of the Office of Archaeological Studies. In 1540, Francisco Vazquez de Coronado led one of the largest expeditions conducted by Spain in North America. The famed exploration never found the sources of wealth it sought, and caused permanent impacts to the peoples they encountered. The expedition spent much of its time overwintering in the Albuquerque area, in a land they called the “Tiguex Province” (today’s southern Tiwa). Evidence of the exploration, including conflict with pueblo peoples, is described from investigations done at the site of Piedras Marcadas in Northwest Albuquerque.I Read more »
