The Office of Archaeological Studies, in collaboration with the Santa Fe Chapter of the Archaeological Institute of America and other organizations in northern New Mexico will host an open house at the Center for New Mexico Archaeology on Saturday, October 15, 2016 from 10 am to 4 pm. Visitors will have the opportunity to tour the Archaeological Repository, which is the primary storage facility for New Mexico's archaeological collections. In addition, the working research laboratories of the Office of Archaeological Studies will be open.

Historic US Highway 66, the Mother Road, connected Chicago to Los Angeles weaving through many states and communities. Previously, little has been written on American Indian communities experiences with Route 66. In 1540, Francisco Vazquez de Coronado led one of the largest expeditions conducted by Spain in North America. The famed exploration never found the sources of wealth it sought, and caused permanent impacts to the peoples they encountered. The expedition spent much of its time overwintering in the Albuquerque area, in a land they called the “Tiguex Province” (today’s southern Tiwa). Evidence of the exploration, including conflict with pueblo peoples, is described from investigations done at the site of Piedras Marcadas in Northwest Albuquerque.I
