Through images and historical documents, we will tell the story of how the Hunts Point Slave Burying Ground was “lost” for a hundred years, until a few NYC DOE history and science educators helped identify it and help bring the cemetery’s narrative to the public, historians and the children of eponymous PS 48, The Joseph Rodman Drake School. 

 

Philip Panaritis lives and works on the Bronx.  For thirty years he has worked for the NYC DOE as a HS Social Studies teacher, staff developer, curriculum writer, and most recently as the Director of Social studies.

How involved were American scholars in the early exploration of the Holy Land? When we tell the story of the birth of "biblical archaeology," the British are usually credited as the moving force, because of their well-known mapping projects of the 1860's and 1870's. Americans on the other hand, when mentioned at all, are portrayed as bumbling, and incapable, never getting things quite right.
