At 2pm in the DeNault Auditorium in Grimm Hall at Concordia University, Kevin Smith, a former student of Dr. Rene Vellanoweth of CSULA will lecture on some unique Southern California stone tools. Professor Vellanoweth spoke to us May 15, 2016 on his work in the Channel Islands.  As a footnote to his discussion, Professor Vellanoweth described the mysterious crescent shaped stone objects found on the Channel Islands, on mainland California and around the West. At 2pm in the DeNault Auditorium in Grimm Hall at Concordia University, Peter Mills, Professor of Anthropology at the University of Hawai’i, at Hilo, will discuss the controversy over the proposed construction of the large astronomical telescopes on Mauna Kea, a mountain that contains the largest known prehistoric stone tool quarry in the Pacific Basin. His lecture also describes how archaeologists have employed analytic methods to study this quarry to better understand Native Hawaiians’ transport of stone tools throughout the Hawaiian island chain.

At 2pm in the DeNault Auditorium of Grimm Hall at Concordia University, Justin Walsh, Associate Professor of Art History and Archaeology at Chapman University, will describe the implications of his excavation in Cástulo, Spain. Justin notes that Ancient Greek pottery can be found in museum collections around the world. Most of this Greek pottery was actually found far from where it was made. It was exported over long distances, across the Mediterranean, and even over the Alps in northern Europe.
