Dr. Fracchia will provide an overview of recent archaeological research in the city of Nashville\, highlighting some finds from indigenous sites through the late 19th century. He will help us understand recent archaeological research\, new approaches and technologies\, and what the study of objects and artifacts reveals about Nashville’s history. \nAbout the speaker: Adam Fracchia is an archaeologist and historic preservationist with the Metro Historical Commission. He previously led a community archaeology program in Baltimore and he has taught at MTSU and the University of Delaware. She has done research and analysis in Greece\, Poland\, Egypt\, and the United States. She has consulted with the Greek Archaeological Service\, the Channel Islands National Park\, and the Nevada State Museum to identify and assess human skeletal remains. As a forensic anthropologist\, she has worked for the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency\, contracted by SNA International. She became a Diplomate of the American Board of Forensic Anthropology (D-ABFA) in February 2022. She has active research projects in both bioarchaeology and forensic anthropology on skeletal remains from a modern 20th century cemetery in central Greece. RSVP required. \nVivien Green Fryd\, Professor Emerita in the History of Art and Architecture Department at Vanderbilt University\, Ph.D\, will share about American painter Benjamin West (1738-1820)\, including West’s Venus and Cupid (1765)\, part of the Parthenon permanent collection. \nABOUT THE SYMPOSIUM:\nBenjamin West’s Venus and Cupid (1765) in the Parthenon’s Cowan Collection marks the first commission this Philadelphia Quaker received upon arriving in Italy to study art. This work\, the first history painting West created in the academic tradition\, which rated history painting as the most important subject\, represents the mythological Venus\, the goddess of love\, with her son\, Cupid. It also evokes to topos of the Madonna lactans\, or the nursing Madonna\, which had been a prevalent subject throughout the Italian Renaissance\, which he studied while in Italy. West showed emotion and love between parent and child that had not existed until the 1760s\, and hence this work joins that of others created by Euro-Americans in the U.S. colonies and abroad who similarly represented changing attitudes towards child-rearing\, family relations\, and the definition of childhood. West was at the forefront of establishing neoclassical subjects and styles as the premier manner of painting during the turn of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

DESCRIPTION:On October 16\, 2021\, the Archaeological Institute of America-Nashville Society and the Nashville Parthenon are teaming up to join hundreds of archaeological organizations around the world to celebrate International Archaeology Day and the Tennessee STEAM Festival. \nFrom 9 AM – 12 PM\, a variety of socially distanced activity stations will be spread out across the second level of the Parthenon. DESCRIPTION:Join the Nashville Parthenon Virtual Summer Symposia series! This is the last of three Symposia. All three support the new exhibition ‘The Antikythera Mechanism’ at the Nashville Parthenon through September 26. \nDr. Anne Duray will introduce underwater archaeological practice that helps experts interpret our human past. Specifically\, Dr. Duray will explain the training and methodology of underwater archaeology to help the virtual audience understand how archaeologists begin to approach underwater sites\, and share her personal experiences and anecdotes in underwater and field archaeology. Her talk will include images to explain underwater archaeology tools\, methods\, and practices\, and share how archaeologists map\, study\, and catalog artifacts. The symposium will help the public understand the dedicated work of archaeology\, and preparation needed to undertake archaeological projects. After the presentation\, there will be time for questions and discussion. \nDr. Duray holds a Ph.D. in Classics with an Archaeology track from Stanford University and is an Editorial Assistant for the American Journal of Archaeology\, and served as a Lecturer at the Archaeology Center at Stanford University. \nSponsored by Humanities Tennessee\, Centennial Park Conservancy\, Archaeological Institute of America- Nashville Society\, and Metro Nashville Parks and Recreation.
