Project Description:

This digitization field school will introduce students to a broad range of 3D recording and mapping techniques. Students will be provided with hands-on instruction in these methods on site in the historical structures of Nafplion, Greece. Students will record the site’s extensive architectural remains using terrestrial laser scanning, GIS and GPS. The skills learned should allow students to work in digitizaton of any other site thereafter.

The field school is a collaborative effort between the IHC and its partners: the Center for Advanced Spatial Technologies at the University of Arkansas, Faveteville (CAST), and Leica Geometics. The IHC has been asked by the municipality of Nafpion, the first capital of modern Greece, to document its historic city center and its most significant historical structures. Using professional-grade laser scanners, the objective of this project is to record the structural data of these buildings, properly orient them to one another in virtual space, and georeference the data we collect to ultimatey create a computer generated representation of historic Nafplion. This representation will be used as essential tools in heritage management for any restoration, documentation or visualization project.
