Project Description:

What does the 21st century anthropology museum look like? Join the 117-year old Phoebe Hearst Museum of Anthropology this summer as it reimagines its role as a place for scholarly discovery and community-based research. The Museum cares for nearly four million objects that span two million years and the six inhabited continents. Using its recently renovated gallery and collections facilities, the Museum is reinventing itself as a destination where cultures can connect and take action for positive change.

The Hearst Museum is located on the University of California, Berkeley campus, the premier public research university in the United States. Students will be introduced to all aspects of museum work, from collections management and registration to philanthropy, cultural policy, and exhibit design. Students will also receive candid tours of select San Francisco Bay Area museums.

Project Size: 1-24 participants

Minimum Length of Stay for Volunteers: Participants are required to stay for the full duration of the field school.

Minimum Age: 18

Experience Required: No prior experience required.

Room and Board Arrangements:
Students will organize their own living and dining options throughout the program. Short-term summer housing is abundantly available in Berkeley and neighboring cities such as Oakland, Emeryville, Albany, and Richmond. Restaurants, cafes, and grocery stores are abundant throughout the Bay Area and close to the Berkeley campus. Students will receive a 90-minute lunch break each weekday from 12PM to 1:30PM. Cost: Students must pay independently for room and board during the program.

Academic Credit:
8 Semester Credits credits offered by Connecticut College. Tuition is $3,950.
