Project Description:

This summer, the Archaeological Field School at Hartwick’s Pine Lake Environmental Campus will offer “Field Research in Archaeology,” an advanced course for undergraduates that introduces students to the basic methods that archaeologists use to identify, excavate, record, and interpret archaeological sites. The session, which runs from May 27 to June 26, 2026, is open to students from all majors.

Hartwick Associate Professor of Anthropology Dr. Namita Sugandhi will conduct the four-week session with SUNY Oneonta Professor Renee Whitman. The course – a combination of classroom lecture and fieldwork – provides students first-hand experience with methods and skills of excavation, as well as field and lab procedures for processing materials recovered during excavation.

Period(s) of Occupation: This is a multi-component site. In previous years, field school students have excavated areas associated with the Late Archaic period (3000-1000 BCE).

Experience Required: No experience required. Some introductory Anthropology coursework preferred.

Room and Board Arrangements:
Housing is available on our Pine Lake Campus. • Lodge, shared room (double): $350 - Lodge is shared with 8-16 total students - each double room has 2 single XL beds, dressers, desks - Shared spaces include multiple bathrooms, laundry in cabin, large kitchen with multiple appliances, Cable TV, Wi-Fi access, students provide their own kitchenware • Lodge, private room (single): $500 - Lodge is shared with 8-16 total students - each single room has 1 single XL beds, dressers, desks - Shared spaces include multiple bathrooms, laundry in cabin, large kitchen with multiple appliances, Cable TV, Wi-Fi access, students provide their own kitchenware • Cabin single: $650 - Cabins are shared with 2-4 total students - each single room has 1 Full sized bed, dresser, desk - Shared spaces include 1 bathroom, large kitchen with large appliances, Wi-Fi access, students provide their own kitchenware & bathroom paper products (laundry and cable TV are only shared in Lodge) • NOTE: Rooms in the lodge will be filled first. Rooms in cabins only if rooms in the Lodge are not available.
