The Monastic Archaeology Field School (MAFS) provides an intensive introduction to field archaeology through hands-on fieldwork, historical study, and engagement with heritage management.  Now in our fourth season, we integrate field excavation and post-excavation work with lectures and discussions about the history of monasticism from its roots to the era of reformation in the sixteenth century in Scotland. An optional three-session intensive introduction to bioarchaeology is also available to interested students in the St Andrews History & Archaeology Lab. We also offer a lab-based three-week intensive introduction to human osteoarchaeology (5-23 July 2027). Students may enroll in both courses.Â
