The AIA joined a national coalition of more than 700 organizations representing 7 million Americans to call on Congress to reject efforts to weaken or dismantle Section 106, a set of regulations that has protected important buildings, structures, archaeological sites, objects, and historic districts since 1966.
The coalition sent an open letter to Congress on August 27, 2026, urging lawmakers to:
* Reject proposed regulations that would weaken Section 106.
* Oppose efforts to undermine Section 106 during the regulatory review and public comment process.
* Reject statutory changes that would weaken Section 106, including those included in broader permitting legislation.
* Defend Congress’s authority to protect the nation’s cultural heritage and historic preservation laws.
* Support meaningful, data-driven improvements that make Section 106 review more efficient without sacrificing the rights, voices, and protections at its core.
